Newcastle set for Champions League glimmer of hope for next season

Newcastle United’s chances of securing a spot in next season’s Champions League have received a significant boost.

The Premier League is currently leading the race to have five teams in the 2024/25 tournament, according to UEFA coefficient rankings.

According to The Analyst, England leads the table with a 77% probability of securing an additional spot in the Champions League, potentially enabling the 5th-placed team in the Premier League to qualify for the UCL. This change comes as the tournament expands from 32 to 36 teams starting next season.

Despite Manchester United and Newcastle finishing at the bottom of their groups, it’s the performances of Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Aston Villa, and Brighton that could greatly benefit Newcastle.

Newcastle remain ten points behind Villa, who currently occupy the 5th position in the table. However, Villa have been experiencing a dip in form lately, with just one win in their last six games, including three consecutive home defeats.

Although it’s not the current expectation considering Newcastle’s position, the upcoming fixture list appears relatively favorable for the Magpies. With more players anticipated to return from injury soon, there’s still a possibility for them to make a late push.

It wasn’t that long ago that Newcastle United were fighting for their lives at the bottom of the Premier League table, so if they could secure back-to-back Champions League campaigns then it would highlight the incredible job the club have done over the last four or five years.
