Crucial Bayern Munich injury update prior to Liverpool clash in Champions League

Bayern Munich face Liverpool in the last 16 of the Champions League later this month, and fears have reportedly eased over captain Manuel Neuer’s injury.

As noted by the Independent on Tuesday, it had been suggested that the 32-year-old could face up to three months out due to a thumb injury that he sustained in training.

With the first leg against Liverpool at Anfield on February 19 and then the return leg on March 13, that would have ruled out the German international for both meetings.

However, Bayern’s fears have been eased as it’s since been reported by Sky Sport Germany that Neuer is back in the squad for their clash with Hertha Berlin in the DFB Cup on Wednesday and it’s suggested that he will even be named in the starting line-up.

The Bavarian giants will also surely need to be cautious and avoid seeing their influential shot-stopper aggravate the injury and risk a lengthy spell on the sidelines, as initially feared.

Nevertheless, given he’s set to be in the squad and is even being tipped to start the game, it would suggest that the injury isn’t as bad as initially thought, and so that would pave the way for him to be available to coach Niko Kovac for the Liverpool tie, provided he comes through unscathed before then.

That will be a huge boost for the Bundesliga champions, as ultimately Neuer continues to play a fundamental role for them in their pursuit of success.

Further, as they continue to play catch up domestically to league leaders Borussia Dortmund, advancing in the Champions League will be a major positive for all concerned to keep their hopes of silverware alive on multiple fronts.
