Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries and Subroto Roy, chairman of Sahara Group are reportedly bidding for a 51 per cent stake

Liverpool is presently owned by American duo George Gillett and Tom Hicks, who acquired the club in February 2007.

However, deported disagreements between Gillett and Hicks, and the lack of the fans’ support, have led to rumours that that international buyers such as the Dubai International Capital would bid for the club.

The Liverpool club emerged as a takeover target for Ambani, the seventh-richest man in the world, as pressure mounted on Hicks and Gillett to cut a deal to sell the club, The Times reported.

Both Ambani and Roy have reportedly each tendered similar bids to pay off Liverpool’s 237 million pounds debt in return for a 51 per cent stake in the club.

Liverpool chief executive, Christian Purslow, however denied any knowledge of bids by Ambani and Roy, but The Times reported that approaches began as early as November and that some preliminary talks had taken place.

Each deal requires that the present owners make a commitment to take no dividends or expenses out of the club for three years to allow the club to resume a secure financial basis.

The Americans were reportedly unpopular with club’s supporters and the hostility had increased as it had become clear that there were no money available to strengthen the team.

In April 2008, business magazine Forbes ranked Liverpool as the fourth most valuable football team in the world, after Manchester United, Real Madrid and Arsenal. (Times Of India)

This can only be good news because quite frankly on this occasion it is definitely not better the devil you know. Tom Hicks and George Gillett have bled the club dry and Anfield has become a debt ridden place because of the actions of the two Americans.

When you read that your club is potentially about to be bought by the second richest man on the planet it can only be a reason to rejoice! Please let it be so!

Former England footballer Paul Gascoigne has been quizzed by police after he was arrested on suspicion of being drunk in charge of a vehicle.

He was taken into custody on Sunday night after police were called to a disturbance at a takeaway in Leeming Bar, North Yorkshire.

The 42-year-old and another man were taken into custody for questioning.

Following a night in custody at Northallerton police station they were released on bail on Monday afternoon.

In December, Gascoigne was given a fixed penalty notice for being drunk and disorderly in Newcastle.

Alcoholics Anonymous

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “At 9.10pm on Sunday, officers from North Yorkshire Police were called to a disturbance at a takeaway at Leeming Bar.

“Following inquiries, two men, aged 42 and 40, from the Newcastle area, were arrested on suspicion of being drunk while in charge of a motor vehicle.

The former Newcastle and Tottenham midfielder has faced a long battle with alcohol and drugs, and was detained three times under the Mental Health Act in 2008.

He told BBC Radio 5 live’s Victoria Derbyshire last year he had been clean of drink and drugs for four months, and had attended Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. (BBC Sport)

We keep hoping that someone would get through to Gazza and that his bad influences, and he has many hanger-ons, would simply vanish but it seems that this tale could end up with a very unhappy ending.

The former Newcastle, Rangers and Lazio genius is in very real danger of ending up as the lead story on the 9 O’Clock news for all the wrong reasons. His well publicized battle against drink, drugs and depression did appear to be about to turn a corner but this latest incident leaves many of his former admirers, me included, worrying just what might happen next.

Portsmouth say they are close to reaching an agreement to avoid being wound up in the High Court.

The club’s lawyers have been in talks with Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs over a deal which they hope will lead to Wednesday’s action being dropped.

It is likely that a substantial part of the money owed will be paid, with the rest of the debt being rescheduled.

The negotiations came a week after businessman Balram Chainrai became Pompey’s fourth owner this season.

An agreement has already been reached with the creditors other than HMRC who have been named in the case, which relates to a reported £7.5m Vat bill.

If a compromise is reached, it is likely that a substantial part of the money due to HMRC will be paid, with the rest of the debt re-scheduled, thereby avoiding Pompey becoming the first top-flight club going into administration.

BBC Radio 5 live’s sports news correspondent Gordon Farquhar said: “With the new, albeit probably temporary, owner in place and some cash in hand from player sales in the transfer window, Portsmouth are in a much better position to negotiate with HMRC to try to find a way around their demands.

“Negotiations will resume on Tuesday with the club hopeful that a deal can be done to make Wednesday’s winding-up petition go away all together.

“The other creditors named in the action have been satisfied. The Revenue are likely to want a chunk of cash now and to be convinced that if they agree to re-schedule the remainder of the debt, that they will be paid.” (BBC Sport)

Well one thing that Portsmouth fans can not say about this season is that it was boring. It appears that the financial heartache that has been rotting the club over the past 18 months could be about to be clearing. Sure it has taken having to sell almost half a squad, the better half, to balance the books but the threat of ‘winding up’ may be about to be extinguished.

Now all they have to do is avoid the drop. Pompey are seven points adrift but Avram Grant has got the south coast side believing in themselves and they must get something from their home fixture against Sunderland who are there for the taking after eleven games without a win and with a truly horrendous away record (five points from a possible 36).

John Terry has offered his thanks to Chelsea fans after admitting the supporters have been ‘quite incredible’ over the past two weeks.

The Chelsea skipper has been faced with allegations regarding his private life over the past fortnight, with reports claiming Terry had an affair with the ex-girlfriend of his former Blues team-mate Wayne Bridge.

He has been stripped of the captaincy of England as a result of the allegations after coach Fabio Capello deemed his decision to be in the best interests of the national team.

Terry has not commented on the allegations and played in front of his own fans at Stamford Bridge on Sunday for the first time since the stories broke.

The centre-half received a positive reaction from the Chelsea fans throughout the 2-0 win over title rivals Arsenal and he has thanked the club’s faithful for their support.
Emotional

“On a personal note I would like to thank every single fan,” Terry told Chelsea TV.

“It’s been an emotional day for myself and how the fans have been with me over the last two weeks has been quite incredible.

“I didn’t expect that today and I would like to thank every single individual fan for the way they treated me.

“It was a great performance and, I mean it from my heart, I would like to thank everyone.” (Sky Sports)

Even though there is a very good case for no one to offer support to a man who cheated on teammates girlfriend and paid for her to have an abortion as a result, you can understand how fans would still want to show their allegiance to their leader, especially when that leader is a player who really does give his all for the cause.

John Terry is right to thank the Chelsea faithful for the way they rallied to his aid and one can only imagine that they will continue to chant his name when he gets a chorus of disapproval whilst playing away from home (no pun intended).

Whether you like it or not, a football fan’s job, or at least a large part of it, is to show your unwavering support to your club and its players and even if the support comes as a result of an off field affair that has left a very sour taste in the mouth (again no pun intended and certainly no Frankie Howerd style innuendo meant) I think it is right for Chelsea fans to back their embattled leader.

Arsenal beat rivals to sign Marouane Chamakh after move to Liverpool collapses.
Chamakh is near to joining Arsenal despite strong interest from Liverpool and Inter Milan

Arsenal were closing in on the signature of Marouane Chamakh last night after the Bordeaux striker’s proposed move to Liverpool collapsed amid some acrimony.

Liverpool believed they had moved ahead of their rivals, who also include Inter Milan and West Ham United, in the race for Chamakh by offering the Morocco player a lucrative pre-contract agreement during intensive talks with his advisers early last month.

Sources close to the deal indicated last night that Chamakh has rejected Liverpool’s approach, paving the way for him to sign for Arsenal. The North London club would have no problem matching the £60,000-a-week wages on offer at Anfield and are in the process of finalising a five-year contract.

Signing Chamakh would represent a triumph of patience for Arsène Wenger, the Arsenal manager, who has been monitoring the 26-year-old for some time. Bordeaux rejected an £8 million offer from Arsenal last summer, but Chamakh’s contract with the French club expires at the end of the season and he will be available to sign on a free transfer. (Times Online)

So there you have it. This source is reporting the Emirates capture of Marouane Chamakh as a done deal. It will cost Arsenal nothing in transfer fees but a pretty hefty £15.6m for the Bordeaux man’s five year contract (or thereabouts).

Arsene Wenger has been desperately trying to get some striking power before the transfer window slammed shut last week and this deal comes a little late for this term but could well work out to be a damn good bit of business from the summer onwards.

The Gunners boss had tried frantically to persuade Chamakh to join last summer and reportedly tried to nab the Moroccan striker last month however it seemed that 26 year old a) wanted to secure a free transfer move in the summer so as to maximise his pay packet and b) could see that he could well leave the Ligue 1 side with a bang after seven years in the first team picture as Laurent Blanc’s side look to capture a successive domestic title and also continue to strive for Champions League glory.

Until the summer Wenger will have to make do with playing the likes of Andrei Arshavin and Theo Walcott out of position whilst waiting and hoping to see Eduardo, Nicklas Bendtner, and most importantly of all, Robin Van Persie back into Emirates action.

Arsene Wenger will surely be spending some of his £35million transfer fund this summer, as Arsenal were involved in three last-minute deals on transfer deadline day which failed to go through.
Wenger was close to bringing in two players on loan, including a centre forward, and another on an initial loan with a view to a permanent move.
It was a dramatic move by the club, the day after their dispiriting 3-1 defeat at home by Manchester United, and not adding to the squad in the final hours may well leave them short for the rest of this season.
But it does seem to indicate that Wenger is ready to spend money in the summer to add the finishing touches to his team. (Daily Mail)

The summer can’t come a minute to soon for Arsenal at present and the fact that Arsene Wenger has money to burn is somewhat irrelevant this end of the transfer window. Having spoken to a great many Gunners fans of late the general consensus is that the Emirates could do with another striker, or two, and a solid dependable keeper and perhaps another centre back (even though Sol Campbell has just returned to the club).

Clearly there is a problem in the attacking area due to the raft of injuries in that department and some would say that Arsene Wenger should have been more prepared for such an eventuality but that could be a little harsh on the Arsenal boss. Others feel that Manuel Almunia is back to his flapping unconfident self and the Spaniard doesn’t seem the keeper he was last season. And its true that the north London club’s back four has been very flat footed and a tad slow when dealing with counter attacks and even basic balls into the box.

Who would Arsenal fans like to see Wenger splash the cash on in the summer?

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is preparing a summer move for Everton starlet Jack Rodwell , according to a report in the News of the World this morning.

Ferguson is planning to pair newly signed central defender Chris Smalling alongside Jack Rodwell in the heart of the Manchester United defence in years to come.

The Premier League champions will bid 12 million pounds for Rodwell who came through the ranks at Everton.

Relations between Manchester United and the Toffees are still frosty over Wayne Rooney’s move to Old Trafford and Ferguson is keen to start negotiations as soon as possible.

Manchester United will also face competition for Rodwell from the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea and Everton boss David Moyes will be eager to hang on to the young starlet who is contracted to the club until the end of season 2013/2014.

Jack Rodwell has not played for Everton since picking up a hamstring injury in December. (IMScouting)

If I was a betting man, and I am by the way, I would gamble a large sum of money that Jack Rodwell will sooner or later become a Manchester United player. Not wishing to rain on Everton’s parade or indeed mean any disrespect to the Merseyside club, but the young Englishman will surely decide in the next year (or even sooner) that in order to further his career he will leave Goodison Park and with Sir Alex known to be a big admirer a move to Old Trafford does seem on the cards and will further add to a growing list of young talent being assembled at the Premier League title holders.

The £18m rated England Under 21 international has become a much sought after property since he first exploded onto the scene a couple of years ago and the rapidly maturing youngster has become adept at playing both in the centre of defence when called upon but more successfully in the centre of the Toffees midfield.

As the likes of Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Gary Neville come towards the end of their Manchester United careers it appears that Sir Alex is building a new breed of Fergie’s Fledglings with the likes of Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans, Darron Gibson and Mare Biram Diouf all looking to have bright futures at the club and with a host of established players still looking to have many years ahead of them it seems that Ferguson has much to look forward to.

If they can nab Jack Rodwell from Everton it will no doubt anger David Moyes in much the same way a certain Wayne Rooney’s exit greatly soured relations between the clubs but could well take the talented youngster to a new level and perhaps make him a future England captain?

They lit up the world for an all too brief period but they proved it was better to burn out than fade away. The Denmark side of 1986 was a joy to watch. The likes of Preben Elkjær, Jesper Olsen, Jan Molby and Michael Laudrup led their group rivals Scotland, Uruguay, and most impressively West Germany, a merry dance. Total football was back on the footballing menu and the world was their oyster… but then the got a little too cocky and after taking the lead against Spain in the second round of the competition they well and truly hit the self destruct button…repeatedly and got stuffed 5-1. We chose however to remember them more fondly with the video below showing the Danes frankly taking the piss and making Uruguay very angry indeed.
