Ex-Chelsea and West Ham managers favourite for Portsmouth gig: Who should replace Adams?

by stresster on February 9th, 2009 1 comment
  • Digg

Tony Adams has once again failed as a football manager, with the Pompey board calling time on his three-month stint at Fratton Park. Many supporters continued to back the former Arsenal defender, especially after the team came so close to beating Liverpool on Saturday. However, a failure to win since November has made the powers-that-be understandably twitchy. [Read the rest of this entry »]

Is Tony Adams dead man walking at Portsmouth? This story would suggest so

by stresster on February 6th, 2009 4 comments

While the Pompey board have made all the right noises about backing Tony Adams, it’s almost inconceivable that they haven’t considered alternatives to the rookie manager. After all, the team are without a win since November and the former Wycombe gaffer seems clueless how to stop the current run of defeats which is threatening their Premier League status. Was West Ham manager wrong to sign these players? It seems they contributed to his downfall

by stresster on September 4th, 2008 no comments
  • Digg

There are an increasing number of Premier League clubs where the board decide which players to sign and the manager just gets on with coaching the team. This has been in evidence at Newcastle since Kevin Keegan took over, while Phil Scolari leaves the bulk of transfer dealings to Peter Kenyon and Roman Abramovich at Chelsea. It also seemed to lead to the resignation of Alan Curbishley at West Ham, although it’s transpired that the board lost confidence in the manager’s ability to sign players. Croatian manager ‘is overwhelming choice for West Ham United job’

by stresster on September 4th, 2008 3 comments

When a manager leaves a Premier League club, the bookmakers are always quick to price up some odds on who his replacement will be. Indeed, they got ahead of themselves by offering prices on the next Newcastle boss, although a day later they were able to get cracking on the West Ham gig instead. The man who was top of their list? Alan Curbishley has resigned as manager of Premier League club West Ham United. Hot on the heels of yesterday’s King Kev shenanigans at the Toon, Curbishley tendered his resignation on Wednesday and it was accepted by West Ham owner Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson. [Read the rest of this entry »]

West Ham manager resigns: Who should come in as replacement?

by stresster on September 3rd, 2008 no comments
  • Digg

It looked as though Kevin Keegan was going to be the first Premier League manager out of job this season, although Alan Curbishley has beaten him to it by a whisker. The now-former West Ham gaffer has had his resignation accepted by the board, bringing a 17-month rollercoaster to an end and leaving the east London club looking for a replacement. West Ham woe continues: Striker considering future while defender calls for manager to sort it out on the pitch

While Alan Curbishley might claim that the Hammers board are firmly behind him, all the signs seem to indicate that the manager is living on borrowed time at the Boleyn Ground. Despite a winning start to their league campaign, West Ham have had two particularly performances, losing 3-0 at Man City before drawing 1-1 at home to Macclesfield in the Carling Cup. Sunderland defender claims West Ham United pulled plug on new deal

When Bobby Zamora left West Ham for Fulham earlier this summer, he claimed that it wouldn’t be the only departure from the club, with plenty of others to follow. Although there’s not been an exodus, it’s looking increasingly likely that the Hammers board are now strapped for cash – or at least unprepared to invest any more money into the club. West Ham manager leading the sack race – with Everton, Liverpool and Man City counterparts close behind

by stresster on August 28th, 2008 2 comments

Who will be the first Premier League manager to be sacked this season? Last term, it was Jose Mourinho who unexpectedly left his post first, although it’s pretty safe to assume that Phil Scolari will not be walking away from Stamford Bridge anytime soon. However, there are already one or two gaffers looking over their shoulders after just a handful of matches. [Read the rest of this entry »]

West Ham fans told they’re not helping the club

by stresster on August 28th, 2008 4 comments

It’s no secret that Alan Curbishley is the bookmaker’s favourite in their Premier League ‘Sack Race’ market, something that no manager wants to win. West Ham’s 4-1 victory over Macclesfield has done little to end speculation that the Hammers boss is living on borrowed time, especially as the Premier League outfit trailed for most of the match and only made certain of the win in extra-time. West Ham striker ‘in talks with Manchester City’: Beginning of the end for Curbishley?

by stresster on August 26th, 2008 4 comments

The knives are out for Hammers boss Alan Curbishley today, especially after such a dismal showing at the City of Manchester Stadium on Sunday. Ironically, the team that beat them now look like they could heap further misery on West Ham by snapping up one of their best players, albeit someone who gets injured rather a lot. Defender’s £8 million move to Sunderland ‘out of my hands’ claims West Ham manager

by stresster on August 26th, 2008 1 comment

There’s two things to note from this particular news story. Firstly (and most obviously), just how crazy are Sunderland going with their summer spending? Their 2-1 win at White Hart Lane must have been pleasing for manager Roy Keane, especially after many of his new acquisitions played a vital part in ensuring victory, not least Djibril Cisse who scored the winner. Does West Ham United manager deserve to be favourite for sack?

by stresster on July 31st, 2008 4 comments

It would be a major surprise if the twenty men currently managing a Premier League team are still in charge by the end of the season. Indeed, it would be something of a shock if only one or two were axed by their respective clubs, with chairmen getting itchy feet after a few bad results these days. But which gaffer will be the first to get the axe next term? The West Ham manager is favourite, but claims not to be bothered in the slightest. [Read the rest of this entry »]

West Ham want £10m pair: ONE good, ONE more trouble than he is worth

by Mr Comfort on May 21st, 2008 15 comments
  • Digg

Alan Curbishley appears keen to beef up his goalscoring options for next season, which is understandable when you consider that when you take Dean Ashton out of the equation, last season’s next top scorer only managed four league goals. And hence the latest rumour relating to possible attacking targets.

West Ham are after an attacking £10m rated pair as Curbishley looks to capture Manchester United striker Louis Saha and Bolton winger El-Hadji Diouf. (The Guardian)

Now I think that when he isn’t plagued by injury (which is pretty much all the time at present), Louis Saha is a 15-goal-a-season striker in the Premier League and well worth considering a bid for, especially if the price is right. However I do not see the worth in pursuing Diouf as I can’t see him doing much forWest Ham. What do Hammers think of this pair? Worth buying or better to steer clear?

Chelsea reckon West Ham will roll over for an Old Trafford tummy tickling..

It looks like West Ham will be as effective as a chocolate teapot against Man Utd atOld Trafford after Hammers gaffer Alan Curbishley claimed that it would be ‘a great injustice’ if Sir Alex’s men didn’t win the title….Hmmm, methinks that West Ham will be crapper than an old sailor’s barnacled arse for this crunch title decider. According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea boss Avram Grant is peeved at Curbishley’s claim that:

‘It would be a great injustice if Manchester United were to lose the Premier League title. I would raise a glass if United win the title. It would be, of course, a toast to Alex Ferguson, the best there is and may ever be.’

So will West Ham drizzle the Champions elect in Champagne when they visit Old Trafford or will they actually put up some semblance of a fight.

West Ham boss warns players in language they understand

by stresster on April 9th, 2008 no comments
  • Digg

And no, we don’t mean Welsh, Swedish or Ghanaian! Alan Curbishley is fed up with his team’s poor league form after they crumbled to a 1-0 home defeat to Portsmouth, who should have really been there for the taking considering Harry Redknapp rested a couple of players and Pompey’s recent FA Cup exertions.

Nevertheless, the Daily Mail has reported that tenth-placed Hammers better shape up if the squad are going to receive any bonuses at the end of the season. Just four points separate them from Spurs and the prospect of missing out on some extra loot, poor lambs.

“This year their bonuses are geared to being in the top 10,” said Curbishley. “They get nothing for not being there. We need to be in that top 10 to take anything from the season.

“I can’t keep complaining about what’s gone on at the club. We’ve fizzled out in games. The opportunities have been there for us to push on, but we haven’t taken them.”

It’s something of a mystery why a top-ten finish should mean so much to any club, apart from the pride at finishing in the upper half of the table. It’s not as if you get to play in Europe, although the higher up the league you finish, the more prize money that’s awarded to the club. Next up for West Ham is a trip to Bolton – will their players be up for it on a cold afternoon up north?

West Ham to do away with £50million spend next season in bid to finish 11th

by stresster on March 20th, 2008 19 comments
  • Digg

The Hammers are about as mid-table as you can get in the Premier League this season, despite splurging a load of cash on transfers last summer and during the January transfer window. While it’s clear that they have been unfortunate with injuries, perhaps they should have considered that the likes of Craig Bellamy, Scott Parker and Kieron Dyer have always been prone to spells on the sidelines, rather than bleating about it incessantly.

The Times reports that West Ham are planning to largely stick with the squad they’ve got for next season, hoping that the number of players on the treatment table is reduced so that manager Alan Curbishley has a full compliment from which to pick (if he survives until August).

“I think when all our players are fit and we can play Dean Ashton up front with Craig Bellamy or Freddie Sears, when Julien Faubert gets a chance, when we can play Scott Parker and Kieron Dyer in midfield, then we are capable of making the top six, and that is our aim,” chief exec Mike Duxbury said. “I think there will be money for signings, but I am not sure we want to use it.”

“If we bring in big-money signings, then we are not going to see the players who we have already get a chance to show what they can do,” Duxbury said. “What sort of message are we sending out to Sears if we buy another big-money striker? Obviously, we will look to bring in players where we need a bit of cover, but perhaps we will bring in a younger striker and let him learn from the more experienced players.”

It will be interesting to see if West Ham hold true to this policy next January if they’re floundering in the lower reaches of the Premier League. It’s certainly hard to see them achieving their aim of finishing sixth next term, considering the renovation likely to be taking place at White Hart Lane in the summer.

West Ham manager rails against ‘media agenda’

by stresster on March 14th, 2008 2 comments
  • Digg

The month of March has been mean to West Ham fans so far. They’ve been on the receiving end of three 4-0 drubbings, albeit against Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham, three of the best teams in the league. The Independent report that Alan Curbishley is far from a happy bunny, although it’s just as much to do with the way the media are manipulating what he says than the poor performances from his lacklustre team.

“I accept being West Ham manager is high-profile – certainly when you lose three games 4-0, that’s even worse,” Curbishley said. “I talk openly and honestly but it can get twisted and I think it has been twisted in recent weeks.

“I’ve called for one or two people to be realistic, especially the press,” Curbishley said. “I’m not saying I shouldn’t be criticised, let’s not get that wrong, but I’m a West Ham fan so I feel for everybody as much as they feel and I’m desperately trying to do as well as I can.”

He added: “I do think that perhaps there is a little bit of an agenda out there at the moment and it’s directed not just at the team but me personally.”

Surely Curbs has enough experience as a manager to be a bit less sensitive? It’s clear that in this world of fake exclusives and fevered speculation, you often have to take what’s being reported with several pinches of salt. One thing’s for sure, West Ham need a positive result against Blackburn on Saturday which would ward against the perceived ‘media agenda’ continuing, at least in the short-term.
