The Wembley Cup came to an end yesterday and Tony Mowbray’s Celtic side won the tournament after a fairly straightforward victory over Spurs. Two noteworthy asides. Great goal by Georgios Samaras and the repeated booing of Alan Hutton for being a former Rangers man.

Stoke keeper lashes out at Tottenham defender: Should Spurs have had a third red card?!

by stresster on October 21st, 2008 6 comments

To say that Tottenham’s match against Bolton on Sunday is must-win would be an understatement. Not for a long time has victory been so important in the league, for a number of reasons. The pressure on manager Juande Ramos is immense, and a failure to win could see him axed or even walk out of White Hart Lane. Spurs are also without a win in the Premier League this term, following a 2-1 defeat at Stoke, and one of the Potters players is none too happy with a certain Tottenham defender. Chelsea throw toys out of pram over rearranged Everton game

They say that what goes around comes around and this certainly appears to be the case with Chelsea. They are a team that have consistently been at loggerheads with referees throughout the season, bringing the game into disrepute on several occasions and showing no remorse after the event. How Avram Grant had the audacity to claim that Ashley Cole deserves credit for apologising for his ill-timed lunge on Alan Hutton is beyond belief! Should we give the petulant brat a medal for an overdue apology?

Anyway, the Blues appear to have received their comeuppance by having their game with Everton scheduled to 17th April, less than 72 hours after they play Wigan. This is an unfortunate precedent, although it’s doubtful that even many neutrals will have sympathy with a club who have done their level best to be hated throughout the country. The Daily Star report the club’s resultant bleating on the matter.

“We believe the decision to hold the match on Thursday, April 17 undermines the sporting integrity of the competition.

“It gives our rivals for the title an unnecessary competitive advantage at a critical time of the season, with more recovery time from their previous match and preparation time for their next fixture when we have to play two games during the same period. Secondly there has been no consideration given to our fans, who will be presented with serious travel, work and other issues.

“Lastly, the decision sets a dangerous precedent in changing match days still further when fixture congestion does not exist and when a sensible solution regarding other television matches that weekend was suggested.

“Football has benefited greatly from the backing of TV and Chelsea as much as anyone else. However, this decision is one step too far and we reserve all rights on our position.”

It’s extremely doubtful that anything will change regarding the fixtures and it will certainly provide Chelsea with plenty of ammunition should they slip up in the title race against the Toffees. However, they are fortunate enough to have a big enough squad to cope with the upcoming games, while Everton seem less concerned by the fixture pile-up.

Alan Hutton, potentially some kind of glory hunter

by sub on February 29th, 2008 14 comments

It has only been weeks since Alan Hutton signed for Tottenham Hotspur from Rangers but he already has a silverware to boast of.

In only his third appearance for Spurs, Hutton notched up the Carling Cup when Spurs beat Chelsea at Wembley last weekend and he is also in line to win the UEFA Cup with Spurs.

And not only that, Hutton could also have the Scottish Premier League title to celebrate at the end of the season should Rangers conquer Scotland. After all, Hutton featured for Rangers in the first half of the season and is eligible for a medal should Ranger win it.

All this makes Alan Hutton very, very happy and makes him remark:

It would be a bit weird to get an SPL medal, having not played for Rangers for the second half of the season.

I suppose they would send the medal in the post to me. It would be strange. But, of course, I’ll accept the medal – who wouldn’t? I certainly won’t be sending it back.

If Tottenham win the UEFA Cup, then I can’t really feel part of that either because I won’t have played in any of the games. You want to get involved and you want to play, so it’s tough.

It would ridiculously strange should Hutton indeed do the personal treble. And you know what? He has every chance under the sun of doing that!

Hutton will miss UEFA Cup for Tottenham

And it’s all because Glasgow Rangers failed to beat Lyon in their final Champions League group match in December. The Daily Mail explains that the Scottish team’s failure to reach the knockout stages of the above competition means that Alan Hutton cannot play for Tottenham in the UEFA Cup.

A UEFA spokesman exclusively told Sportsmail online: “It is true that Dimitar Berbatov, had he moved to a team playing in the Champions League, would have been able to play in that competition because his current club had not played in that competition.

“But in the case of Hutton, even though he did not play in the UEFA Cup for Rangers, the fact that Rangers have been relegated from the Champions League to the UEFA Cup, means he cannot appear in that competition for Tottenham in the same season.”

It’s not clear whether Juande Ramos was aware of this fact before he signed the Scottish full-back in the January transfer window, although he’ll now be short of cover in Europe with Gareth Bale confirmed as injured for the rest of the season yesterday.

Spurs KO move for Rangers defender Hutton

by sub on January 9th, 2008 no comments

One piece of transfer speculation has crash-landed and unfortunately it pertains to poor old Spurs. Their defence has been one of the worst in the Premier League this season and manager Jaunde Ramos is looking for a huge shake-up at the back. One of his plans this January was to sign highly-rated Rangers full-back Alan Hutton.

However, after weeks of speculation, claims and counter-claims, it has finally been revealed that Spurs no longer want the Scot. According to Sky Sports, Tottenham have officially ended any interest in the player.

Spurs had earlier made an £8 million bid for the player which the Scottish giants rejected. Now Ramos has to restart his hunt for a top-drawer defender. Who will he target next? Could he be looking towards La Liga?

Rangers defender told to join Tottenham or else!

by stresster on January 8th, 2008 44 comments

Poor Alan Hutton. The highly-rated Glasgow Rangers defender has made it abundantly clear that he wants to stay in Scotland, only to find he’ll be sold to Spurs regardless of his views. The Times report that Gers chairman Sir David Murray has met with the Scottish international to point out the various benefits of the transfer, which happens to include the princely sum of £8 million into the coffers at Ibrox.

Asked about the Hutton situation yesterday, Walter Smith, the Rangers manager, was forced to choose his words carefully. “Alan’s initial indication to us was that he has turned [Spurs] down, that he wants to stay here,” Smith said. “So that’s where we are right now.

“When you look at clubs at the present moment, there is the financial aspect and the football aspect to consider. Everybody knows the Rangers financial position isn’t what it was a few years ago, but no one at the club wanted to lose Alan. From a football perspective, nobody wanted him to go.

“But when you get offered that type of money, then you are in a situation where, from a financial point of view, it is acceptable. As I say, nobody wants to lose Alan from a football perspective – and I include the chairman in that – but sometimes the financial part can overtake everything. That’s the reason why the offer was acceptable as a bid. In the meantime, though, we are delighted if Alan has decided to stay.”

You can hardly blame Hutton for being reluctant to up sticks and head down to London, especially when it’s forming part of a Tottenham defence which is one of the most porous in the Premier League. However, it’s a sure sign that Spurs are trying to get their act together defensively, with Juande Ramos continually frustrated by the type of goals his team are conceding on a regular basis.
