Manchester United have made a surprise approach for Fiorentina striker Alberto Gilardino, according to reports in Italy.
Juventus have long been keen on Gilardino but Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to rival the Turin giants for the 28-year-old, claims Gazzetta dello Sport.
The newspaper reports Ferguson is frustrated by Dimitar Berbatov’s lack of consistency, despite his fine form this season, and could be ready to replace the Bulgarian with the £15million-rated Gilardino.
And Fiorentina could do business with United if they get Federico Macheda as part of a swap deal, though Ferguson would be reluctant to lose the young striker. (TalkSPORT)

It seems strange that this source would claim that Sir Alex Ferguson is frustrated with Dimitar Berbatov, especially given he is the top scorer in the Premier League, that said a move for Italian international Alberto Gilardino would be an interesting one.

The 28 year old Fiorentina front man is one of the most consistent strikers in Serie A and wherever he has played he has scored goals. After astonishing success at Parma the talented attacker moved to AC Milan where he was he helped the Rossoneri to a Champions League triumph and since his move to Florence he has not looked back, scoring 42 goals in the last two seasons.

Gilardino is a good player with his back to goal and can also be a predatory finisher when needs be and perhaps after a career spent in Italy the striker may well be keen on a move to the Premier League not least because his side is struggling this term and is dangerously close to the relegation zone and unlikely to secure European football for next term.

Newcastle are weighing up a big-money move for Fiorentina striker Alberto Gilardino, according to reports in Italy.
Chris Hughton’s side have started the season impressively, but have scored just eight goals in five Premier League games.
And ITA Sport Press claim the Magpies are preparing a £12.5m bid for Italian international Gilardino, 28.

This would be an ambitious move for Newcastle, but certainly one that could take them forward. Despite the side’s 6-0 demolition of Aston Villa and overall impressive start, they have struggled for goals so far this season.

Andy Carroll has clearly established himself as a Premier League player, but could benefit from the addition of a top-class strike partner.

Despite his decent goalscoring record, Gilardino is often criticised in Italy for his failure to convert a number of chances before scoring. Is he the man that Newcastle fans want to see at the club? Or should the £12.5million be spent elsewhere?

Fiorentina striker Alberto Gilardino has become the subject of a €15 million interest from Premier League side Newcastle United.
Itasportpress.it reports that the 28-year-old, who has had a slow start to the season, is on the Magpies’ Christmas shopping list and he could arrive in January.
It’s also been reported that despite resistance from Fiorentina, who have maintained that their stars would remain, a €15m bid by United would sway opinions in Tuscany.
Gilardino, who will be remembered in England for his strike against Liverpool in the Champions League last season, threatened to quit the club during the summer when he questioned their ambition.
Since then, however, the Italian striker has rekindled his relationship with the Viola and is a first-choice player in Sinisa Mihajlovic’s team.? (Goal.com)

This would be something of a coup if Chris Hughton can pull it off. Alberto Gilardino is one of the most consistent goalscorers in Serie A and if Newcastle United can bring the 28 year old international to St James’ Park it would represent one of the biggest signings the club has made in recent years.

The former AC Milan and Parma man has scored 116 league goals in the past seven seasons but may feel the time is right for a new challenge as he watches his Fiorentina side go through something of a slump. Having finished 08/09 in a Champions League clinching top four spot Gilardino’s goal failed to ignite his Florence side who then slipped to 11th last term and this season hasn’t started too well to boot.

The striker would be a great acquisition but for the Magpies but there are sure to be other interested parties if indeed he does look to leave La Viola any time soon.

Arsenal target Felipe Melo is on the verge of leaving Fiorentina, according to his team-mate Alberto Gilardino. Arsene Wenger wants to add some steel to his midfield and has earmarked the Brazilianas the man to help his Premier League title bid next season.Melo, 25, has started every game of Brazil’s Confederation Cup campaign and a £15million bid from Arsenal is in the pipeline.

Fiorentina striker Gilardino expects Melo to leave Italy this summer, paving the way for a move to the Emirates.

“I have not spoken with Melo directly. He played well against Italy (during Brazil’s 3-0 win) and he is an excellent player, but I have the feeling he will be sold,” Gilardino said.

The Analysis

The Confederations Cup, as pointless as it is, has given Arsenal fans a good chance to see a potential signing in action. Felipe Melo looks the real deal, a tough tackling uncompromising Brazilian midfielder the kind of player that Cesc Fabregas has been begging Arsene Wenger to sign.

Now even Melo’s Fiorentina teammate believes the player has played his last game for La Viola and that can only be good news for the Gunners faithful. The north London club desperately needs a midfield partner for their Spanish international and the likes of Alex Song and Denilson have tried, with differing results, to fill the void left first by Patrick Vieira and then again by Mathieu Flamini.

The 25 year old battler could be just the man to help push the Emirates outfit towards ending their four year silverware drought.

AC Milan to keep Alberto Gilardino

Alberto Gilardino was once considered the next big thing in Italian football and for three years he did do enough to keep the flame of hope and optimism burning. But this is the second season running when a string of injuries married to poor form has raised questions on his class and Italian press rumours suggest that Ac Milan would be more than happy to offload the player in the summer.

Yet Milan President Silvio Berlusconi is not one buying the press reports. Sky Sports quotes the former Italian Prime Minister and virtual owner of Milan as saying that Gilardino will stay with the club come what may.

Gilardino’s future is uncertain at Milan since Brazilian wonder kid Alexandre Pato has sensationally endeared himself to the Milan fans in his debut against Napoli last week and is being hailed as the source of solution for Milan in attack. Berlusconi has also declared that Milan will see a massive revamp of the squad in the summer and that means subtracting the surplus and liabilities from the equation.
