S’Alex Ferguson has been given a rollocking for throwing a chain around Cristiano Ronaldo’s neck and turning him into a footballing dancing bear; and FIFA Ubermeister Sepp Blatter has had enough of this disgusting behaviour. [Read the rest of this entry »]
The Daily Mail, an exuberant – if unreliable – transfer barometer, reckons that David Moyes is set to try his luck at nabbing Darren Fletcher and taking him to Goodison Park. [Read the rest of this entry »]
The Daily Mail is today squealing with excitement like an overexcited schoolgirl after bumping into David Beckham. The reason? Carlos Queiroz has apparently accepted Portugal’s invitation to take their coacing job recently vacated by Big Phil Scolari. [Read the rest of this entry »]
Cardiff wonderkid Aaron Ramsey, rather frothily described by the Independent as “the outstanding talent of his generation” has opted to sign for Arsenal over Man Utd. Although Ferguson’s men gnawed away at Arsenal’s early season lead, and the Gunners tailed off to third place, the first transfer blood of this summer looks to be going to Arsene’s men.
The Independent reveals the reason for Ramsey’s decision:
“Ferguson was the only one of the three managers in serious pursuit of Ramsey – the other being Everton’s David Moyes – who did not break off from his summer holidays to meet the Cardiff City player, instead delegating the meeting to a member of his staff. Ferguson is usually such a brilliant recruiter of young players – his trips to meet parents have so often proved the clincher in deals – but it was Wenger who gave Arsenal’s interest the personal touch by inviting Ramsey out on a private jet to Switzerland, where he is working as a television pundit at Euro 2008.”
Ferguson was also under the impression that Ramsey would be happy to be loaned back to Cardiff, but Wenger apparently promised the young starlet that he would stay and progress at Arsenal. All in all, it looks like the Lord of the Ferg was thoroughly outfoxed on this one…
Champions League and Premier League winners Manchester United have agreed a fee, thought to be between £5m to £6m, with FA Cup finalists Cardiff City for their 17-year-old teen sensation Aaron Ramsey.
Midfielder Ramsey, seen as a new Ryan Giggs, has been under the spotlight with the Bluebirds with their two appearances at Wembley. He was subject of interest from Arsenal, Liverpool and the boarding school that is Spurs, despite only 22 games and 2 goals for Cardiff.
A statement on manutd.com said:
Manchester United is delighted to announce it has agreed terms with Cardiff City for the transfer of Aaron Ramsey subject to terms being agreed and the player passing a medical.
I believe its a good move for United and Ramsey. His development will grow at United and it is great to see Fergie investing in young British talent. Its just a good job he isn’t English or he would have cost £10m+.
There is talk of him being loaned back to Ninian Park for the 2008/09 season, surely a good move for all three parties, what with the successes of Ben Foster at Watford and Fraizer Campbell at Hull.
Maybe Joe Ledley is next on the shopping list?
Now it isn’t something that you’ll hear very often but Manchester United’s title hopes could depend on Darren Fletcher. But before you raise your arms up in disbelief, thinking I’ve lost it, I don’t mean in a way that the shiny Premiership trophy’s home for the next 12 months are influenced by Ronaldo, Rooney or Anderson.
With Darren Fletcher being out for six weeks Manchester United have lost a vital squad player. As the season ends, players like John O’Shea, Park Ji Sung and Darren Flecther are going to be vital to Manchester United as they chase the Premiership and Champions League trophies.
I for one have never been a fan of Darren Fletcher and have often been heard to swear upon hearing of his inclusion in a vital game, but 21 appearances this season show that he has his role to play as a squad player and is important to United’s season.
If Fletcher is injured, surely it means that players like Ronaldo and Rooney cannot be rested against ‘lesser teams’, therefore reducing their freshness and impact, therefore reducing United’s attacking prowess, therefore reducing their chances of success.
Sir Alex, as always, blames the national teams…
We’ve had a bad blow with Darren and it emphasises the futility of playing these friendly games.
He should have played for 45 or 60 minutes at most, but he played the full game so he’s out for six weeks.
Liverpool gaffer Rafa Benitez has had a sly swipe at his opposite number S’Alex Ferguson mere days before the two rivals butt heads as one half of Grand Slam Sunday. In response to the Lord of the Ferg’s comments that Ronaldo needs protection from referees, Rafa said:
“Ferguson is clever, that is clear,” said Benítez. “After a difficult game [Portsmouth] he was talking about referees and before an important game [Liverpool] he is talking about protecting Ronaldo. The referees, though, have experience and they will know Ferguson. Sunday’s referee has experience and he is strong enough.
“Ferguson has a lot of experience. If you need to protect Ronaldo, then you also need to protect Torres and Gerrard and all the skilful players in the league. This kind of treatment must be the same for all the teams and all the players. I wasn’t surprised last week to hear what he was saying. I just want to go into the game with the same situation as the other team.”
So after Fergie Ferg’s opening salvo, Rafa has responded by claiming that Ferg is trying to influence refs – poor Steve Bennett better be on the top of his game come Sunday!
Newcastle United currently sit 11th in the Premier League. While they’re unlikely to be playing in Europe next season, they certainly won’t be relegated, having as many wins as defeats so far this campaign. However, you’d think the Magpies were rooted to the bottom of the division given the sheer volume of media coverage devoted to Sam Allardyce’s future at St James’ Park.
Is he teetering on the brink? According to the BBC, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson thinks that would solve nothing and actually believes Allardyce is one of the best Newcastle managers of recent seasons.
“I would be astounded if they got rid of Sam. Of all the managers they’ve had, he’s capable of doing better than most,” he said.
“It seems to me as soon as Newcastle lose a game, the manager’s career is threatened,” he said.
“The worst thing that happened to Newcastle was when they beat us 5-0. How many years ago was that?
“But since then, they seem to think they should win every game 5-0. I am not sure the Newcastle job is one you would want to take.
“I will certainly never understand why they got rid of Bobby Robson given his experience and enthusiasm, plus the fact he is a Geordie.”
It appears that the St James’ Park hotseat is fast becoming a poisoned chalice, with the weight of expectation meaning a new manager is given little to no time to turn things round.
