Fulham to Sign French Strike Pair as Jol Looks to Sell Zamora & Johnson

Fulham are closing in on a loan deal for Marseille forward André-Pierre Gignac and could bid for his international team-mate Guillaume Hoarau, according to reports in France.
French radio station RMC SPORTS have reported that an agreement has been reached between Fulham and Marseille that will see Gignac move to Craven Cottage until the end of the season, with an option for the Londoners to make the move permanent for a fee of £6.7m.
The same station has also suggested that Fulham have enquired about Paris St-Germain striker Guillaume Hoarou, but any move for the 27-year-old is unlikely to take place before the French side confirm Carlo Ancelotti as their new manager.
With Martin Jol rumoured to have fallen out with Bobby Zamora, and Andy Johnson set to leave in January, moves for Gignac and Hoarou would certainly provide a much-needed attacking boost for the Craven Cottage club.

Whilst Fulham boss has been quick to deny any speculation around a possible falling out with Bobby Zamora the fact that the England man didn’t even make the Cottagers squad for the West London derby on Boxing day spoke volumes. Andy Johnson is also likely to leave as his contract is up in the summer and a sale next month would help avoid the loss of the £10.5m signed player for nothing.

Jol has had to rely heavily on goals from the midfield and wings, chiefly from Clint Dempsey and Bryan Ruiz, so the addition of this French pair would do wonders for the club’s pursuit to climb the Premier League table. Similarly Guillaume Hoarau has found himself out of the PSG since the big spenders brought in new striking options over the summer.

Andre-Pierre Gignac’s career has stagnated somewhat at Marseille and the 26 year old has the quality to make it in the English top tier.

Fulham striker Andy Johnson has rejected the club’s offer of a one-year extension on his contract as he is holding out for a two-year-deal.

The 30-year-old can leave Craven Cottage for free this summer but the west London club may decide to cash in on him in January if he does not commit his future soon.

The England international will be available for a nominal price, possibly as little as £2million, which will alert a number of clubs.

He cost Fulham £10.5million in 2008 and has endured a topsy turvy career with the Cottagers mainly because of injury.

Former boss Roy Hodgson would love to take him to West Bromwich Albion but it is understood the in-form poacher would prefer to stay in London where his family is settled.

This could put Queens Park Rangers and West Ham United in the driving seat but Johnson wants to continue playing Premier League football, and that is not guaranteed at either club.

Fulham manager Martin Jol wants to keep him and is trying to convince Johnson to change his mind and sign on the dotted line.

“I talk to him almost every day,” said Jol. “I tell him there isn’t much difference between one and-a-half and two years, but he doesn’t agree.

“He wants this year and another two years. That is the only thing we are arguing about.”

Hawthorns boss thinks two Johnson’s are better than one.

West Bromwich Albion manager Roy Hodgson is preparing a double swoop for Fulham striker Andy Johnson and Leeds United midfielder Bradley Johnson.

The Daily Mirror reports Hodgson wants to be reunited with the 30-year-old hit-man he took to Craven Cottage in a £10.5million deal from Everton in 2008.

He will put in a £4million bid for Johnson, who has struggled with injuries and is now considering his future in West London.

Sky Sports understands Hodgson is also preparing a move for Leeds hero Bradley Johnson.

The 24-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and turned down a three-year deal to stay at Elland Road in November.

Hodgson is a known admirer of the player and believes he will a quality addition to the squad.

But he will face competition from a number of Premier League clubs including Wigan, Stoke City and Bolton Wanderers.

Fulham are prepared for a tug-of-war to keep striker Andy Johnson as Newcastle United and Sunderland prepare summer bids.

The former Everton and Crystal Palace forward has just returned to full fitness and scored in the 2-2 draw against Aston Villa.

Newcastle and Sunderland are in the market for a striker after Andy Carroll and Darren Bent make big-money moves away from the north-east in January.

Both clubs are monitoring the progress of the 29-year-old, who has 18 months left on his contract, and could be available for around £8 million.

But Fulham are not prepared to see Johnson go without a fight and want to sit down with the striker and sign a new contract.

Guilty of diving on a number of occasions. Not so much in recent seasons, but Gamst Pederson really struggled to stay on his feet in his first few years as a Premier League player.

Seol Ki-Hyeon and Clint Dempsey are the only Cottagers to have scored away from home this season, and it’s perfectly possible that they’ll draw a blank at Goodison Park. Fulham have been distinctly second-rate away from home for some time now, with a dreadful record on their travels nearly costing them their Premier League status last term.
This season is no better, although they do have £10.5 million striker Andy Johnson back in the team, and the striker is in hot form after bagging a brace against Wigan on Wednesday. It’s clear that there is no love lost between AJ and former club Everton, although Roy Hodgson has advised him that following in the footsteps of Wayne Rooney and kissing the crest is a definite no-no. The Daily Mail reports that the Fulham manager doesn’t think the fans want to see this hollow demonstration of loyalty.
He said: ‘It’s a sad state of affairs when you have to tell players not to kiss the badge, or don’t do this or don’t do that. But perhaps it will behove us to do that. I’m a football coach and I talk to players about their roles to help the team win.
‘I’m not a great fan of badge kissing. We’re mercenaries in football, there’s no question of that. The days of badge kissing at Fulham died when the likes of Johnny Haynes and Jimmy Hill retired.
‘I’m surprised if fans want to see it. The supporters are not stupid. They know that players come and go and change clubs.
‘I would expect every player to have nothing but the club in his head while he is here and he doesn’t need to kiss the badge to show me that.’
Some common sense from Hodgson, although it’s clear that Johnson will get some stick from the Everton fans after criticising the manager for playing him out of position when he was with the Merseyside club. Do football supporters like to see their players demonstrate loyalty to the shirt, or do they think it’s a pointless exercise?

Everton’s summer has been chronicled by two fan sites; Toffeeweb and Blue Kipper. While the Official Everton site has been glumly sitting on their hands, offering up the occasional chintzy article by Phil Neville in a vain attempt to slake the fans’ transfer bloodlust – the two fan sites seem to have the inside track on all Goodison movements.
Blue Kipper was the first to break the news that Keith Wyness, Everton’s CEO, was going to jump ship, and Toffeeweb brought us news of the “problems” surrounding the Andy Johnson deal, so when one of these sites chirrups in with some more transfer tidbits, you have to take notice. Today is Toffeeweb‘s turn, citing “Internet Whisperings” as their source:
An unnamed Ghanaian could be the next player in through the door on a free transfer according to rumour, with some speculating it’s Sammy Kuffour, the 31 year-old defender who is without a club after being released by AS Roma.
Another, more exciting prospect, of course, is long-time target Stephen Appiah. (Toffeeweb)
Obviously either of these two would be gratefully gobbled up by the Goodison faithful, but Appiah in particular – on a free – would be a great piece of bargain basement business.

New Fulham striker laments ‘difficult system’ at Everton

The Toffees may have landed fifth place in the Premier League last term, although it doesn’t appear that every member of the squad was a happy one. These days, football managers have a tough old job on their hands trying to keep everyone happy, especially those on the fringes of the first-team who are asked to play out of position.
Setanta report that Andy Johnson was not a happy bunny during his final season at Goodison Park, being deployed on the wing in a supporting role to Yakubu. Indeed, while Everton were at one stage challenging Liverpool for fourth place in the Premier League, the striker was clearly disgruntled at being forced to play a bit-part role for the Blues.
“They (Everton) only play with one up front away, and at home really, so you had four strikers playing for one place, which was quite difficult,” said the 27-year-old.
“Yak (Aiyegbeni Yakubu) was the main guy up front and I was playing off him, sometimes a little bit deeper on the wings and that hindered me.
“I didn’t really settle and had quite a lot of injuries. The one up front formation limited the amount of games I played. I was out on the right and didn’t really get going.”
It’s clear that Fulham haven’t spend a huge amount of money to use AJ sparingly at Craven Cottage, and it’s entirely likely that he and Bobby Zamora will team up in attack for Roy Hodgson’s men. Everton fans, are you sorry to see Johnson go or do you think it’s a sound bit of business for a squad player?
