Aston Villa midfielder Barry Bannan has returned to training following the club suspension which was imposed after he was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.

Manager Alex Mcleish confirmed in a statement today that Villa’s internal investigation into the allegations against Bannan had been put on hold.

The club will wait for police to complete their probe into a motorway crash which involved Bannan and Shrewsbury striker James Collins, a former Villa player, in the early hours of October 23.

Scotland international Bannan was arrested by police following the crash near junction 26 of the M1, which occurred at around 5.30am, and was subsequently bailed.

The 21-year-old was suspended by Villa two days after his arrest.

McLeish said: “Barry Bannan returned to training today.

“The club has suspended internal enquiries into allegations which arose a couple of weeks ago pending the outcome of police enquiries. We will not be commenting further.”

Former AC Milan and Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti will take a one-year sabbatical from the game to recharge his batteries and learn from his colleagues.

The 51-year-old was sacked by the Blues on the last day of a disappointing season despite finishing second and winning the Premier League and FA Cup double in his first campaign.

The Italian has been linked with a number of job vacancies, notably Aston Villa, Roma and Fulham but reveals he has not been contacted by any of them.

Ancelotti says he will manage Roma, where he enjoyed a successful playing career between 1979 and 1987, one day but not yet.

“I am in no hurry to coach and I don’t need to,” he told La Stampa.

“I have not been contacted by any club in England and I have not spoken to Roma. It is all fantasy.

“I have always said and I reiterate it that one day I will coach Roma, but it’s still early.

“I have enjoyed this experience (of coaching in England). I will return to London to organise my life.

“Besides a six-month break, I have been coaching non-stop since 1995. I will take a year off and look around, study how my colleagues work.”

Aston Villa winger Ashley Young has rejected the chance to join Liverpool in favour of a move to Manchester United.

The Daily Mirror reports the Red Devils have agreed a £15million fee that will see the 25-year-old head to Old Trafford.

The England international was the subject of interest from Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish who is searching for a top-class winger to provide more width to his side.

The Scot is likely to turn his attention to Young’s Villa team-mate Stewart Downing, who said this week he will not be signing a new deal at Villa Park.

Young’s move will not the only new face at Old Trafford with manager Sir Al;ex Ferguson promising to sign at least three big names.

Atletico Madrid goalkeeper David De Gea is on the verge of completing an £18million move.

The arrival of Young to United could spark the exit of Nani who has attracted interest from Inter Milan.

Aston Villa are preparing to take advantage of neighbours Birmingham City’s relegation by making a £15million bid for Ben Foster and Scott Dann.

The Daily Mirror reports the Villa Park club will break a 28-year hoodoo by signing the highly-rated duo.

England goalkeeper Foster and highly rated centre half Dann have been identified as the two major players in the Blues’ ­relegated squad who could strengthen their squad.

Villa have just released ten players and stars Ashley Young and Stewart Downing have both strongly linked with exits this summer.

It is likely a re-building programme will happen at the club and Foster and Dann could be the start of many new faces arriving at the club.

The Villains cannot make any new transfers until manager Gerard Houllier is given clearance to return following ill-health.

A decision will be taken in the next seven days, with ­Houllier’s No 2 Gary McAllister insisting the 63-year-old will be ready to report back full-time for pre-season on July 7.

But Villa will face competition from other clubs if they wish to buy the Birmingham pair.

Dann has attracted interest from Liverpool while Foster is a traget for Tottenham Hotspur.

Aston Villa have released ten players including stars Nigel Reo-Coker, John Carew and Robert Pires.

The Villa Park chiefs have instigated the exodus after a disappointing season which saw them fighting off relegation for much of the campaign.

They are expected to freshen up the squad for next year with a big emphasis on youth and reducing the wage bill to make the club sustainable.

Carew and Reo-Coker both were signed by former manager Martin O’Neill but enjoyed different success at the club.

The tall Norwegian was a pivotal figure in the club under O’Neill, who secured successive top six finishes but was sent on-loan this season to Stoke City.

Reo-Coker had the opposite career. He had an infamous training ground bust-up with O’Neill but has established himself in the midfield under Houllier.

Pires’ exit appeared inevitable after accusing the club this week of lacking respect, following a frustrating spell with the club stretching back to November when he joined on a free transfer.

Squad players Moustapha Salifou and Isaiah Osbourne will also be leaving Villa Park along with youngsters Harry Forrester, Arsenio Halfhuid, Durrell Berry, Ellis Deeney and Calum Flanagan.

They are not the only departures expected from Villa Park this summer.

Ashley Young, Stewart Downing and Brad Friedel have all been strongly linked with moves away from the club.

Atletico Madrid are going head-to-head with Aston Villa for the managerial services of Rafael Benitez.

The Times reports the former Liverpool boss has been made a ‘very attractive offer’ to move back to Spain and take the reigns at the Estadio Vicente Calderón.

He has been out of work since being sacked by Inter Milan after only six months and it is as yet unclear whether he will uproot his family from their Merseyside home.

Sources close to Benítez say he is determined not to rush into a decision and will proceed with plans to leave on a ten-day family holiday this morning.

Villa were also said to be interested in the 51-year-old amid concerns over manager Gerard Houllier’s health.

But owner Randy Lerner has not yet made a decision on Houllier’s role at the club and has not made an offer to Benitez.

Atletico’s approach raises the possibility of the Spaniard crossing swords once more with Jose Mourinho.

There is no love lost between the pair and working in the same city could raise tensions once more.

Benitez worked for Atletico’s neighbours Real in his early coaching career but often speaks highly of Los Rojiblancos.

“I have always had sympathy for Atlético Madrid, because, among other things, I have friends there and my father always liked Atlético,” Benítez said in February.

“He said he was going to support Atlético Madrid ahead of Real and I have always had much sympathy for them since.

“The team has always seemed spectacular, especially their fans.”

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is contemplating offering Andrey Arshavin for Aston Villa winger Stewart Downing in a straight swap deal.

The Gunners boss is looking to freshen up his squad this summer and sees Downing as the ideal player to offer more natural width down the left-flank.

The 26-year-old yesterday confirmed he will not be signing a new contract with the Midlands club and wants to move to realise his ambition of playing in the Champions League.

With only two-years left on his current deal the Villa Park board may decide to cash in on him now while his re-sale value is still high.

But Wenger will not be held to ransom over the fee and believes £10million-rated midfielder Arshavin will be an adequate switch.

The 29-year-old has endured a torrid season and has left his manager and fans frustrated at several lazy performances.

The Russian international is said to a target for former club Zenit St Petersburg and Juventus but no bids have yet emerged.

Villa caretaker manager Gary McAllister is rumoured to be interested in taking Arshavin as part of a deal but would want cash on top to meet their £15million valuation of Downing.
