Cristiano Ronaldo is set to become the Premier League’s number one moneybags player when Manchester United give him a gigantic £44m contract that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2014. (News of the World)
…And Fabio Capello is reportedly interested in having Paul Scholes’ unique ginger brilliance in the England squad, and will try and turn on the charm in order to convince him. (various)

Portsmouth midfielder Sulley Muntari has revealed that he was a whisker away from signing for Man Utd when he was a teenager – only to succumb to work permit issues – but one day he would love to sign for the Old Trafford club. (various)
…Meanwhile, Manchester City are ready to start legal proceedings to ensure that Benjani’s £9m move from Portsmouth to Man City is stopped. (News of the World)
…However, Man City manager Sven Goran Eriksson claims that he is waiting for Benjani with opens arms and expects the deal to go through early next week. (Mail on Sunday)

Although Jermain Defoe joined Portsmouth it was only a loan deal not a permanent one. Portsmouth maintain that the deal will be made permanently shortly. (Sunday Mirror)

Afonso Alves complicated transfer wrangle will continue with FIFA now steeping in to investigate the Brazilian’s move to Middlesbrough after a complaint from Alves’ former agent. (Sunday Mirror)

AZ Alkmaar wants Alves ban

by sub on February 3rd, 2008 1 comment

Alfonso Alves might have brought with him loads of quality and a formidable goal scoring track record but the Brazilian international striker has also imported a whole heap of controversies and legal battles. Sky Sports reports that Dutch club AZ Alkmaar is all set to go to football’s world governing body FIFA in order to try and force a ban on Alves for the rest of the season.

Middlesbrough signed the striker from Heerenven on Thursday but AZ claim that they had a pre-contract agreement with the player. Alves has of course denied ever making any such contract but that doesn’t allay the feeling of betrayal and anger that AZ chairman Dirk Scheringa is going through at the moment.

Scheringa says:

He really has a chance of getting banned from playing for the rest of the season. We have a water-tight contract with him.

So hold on you Boro fans, there could yet be more drama and controversy waiting for you in the coming days.

Arsenal boss Arsène Wenger is hopeful that if he keeps on waving a new contract under the nose of Mathieu Flamini, the French midfielder will eventually sign it. (Independent)

Derby County have turned their noses up at a bid from Maccabi Tel Aviv for US midfielder Benny Feilhaber. (Various)

Middlesbrough’s transfer swoop for Afonso Alves is becoming a sticky maze of red tape, after successfully navigating through work permit issues for the Brazilian, AZ Alkmaar now reckon that they already bagged the 26 year-old on a pre-contract(!) (Independent)

Birmingham are having a hearty bloodhound-like sniff around Huddersfield ‘keeper Matt Glennon, who performed heroics against Brum in the FA Cup third round. (Mirror)
