Liverpool top gaf Rafael Benitez’s latest dippings into the transfer market have already caused quite a stir this summer. After the pandemonium that greeted the arrival of Fernando Torres last year, Rafa is looking to cement his untouchable status among the Anfield faithful by bringing in Gareth Barry – highly rated by both the Kopites and their influential captain Stevie Gerrard. Much will be pinned on their pair showing the glimpses of midfield dominance occasionally afforded to the England team as the Red’s strive to end their 18 years of Premier League heartache. However, it may be the signings that are NOT made which could shatter Liverpool’s silver vision.
As we look back to the last few seasons under Benitez’s guidance, Liverpool have failed to perform in one crucial area; the wings. Rafa has struggled to find suitable personnel to fit that vital position in his squad, and Liverpool have consequently suffered from a real lack of talent in width. With the torment that was Harry Kewell’s Anfield days finally at an end, we see few examples of real quality in those wide positions. Youngster Ryan Babel has desperately tried to fill that void, but his youth and experience is telling – seemingly being far more effective as an impact sub late on against tired legs. There is no doubting that he will go on to achieve great things, but it is too early for the Dutch wonder-kid to be the consistent creative dynamo that Liverpool need.
Talk of Silva joining Rafa at Anfield seems to have slowly died down, with the rumors of Rafa’s next targets after Barry’s farce of a transfer saga is finally resolved seeming to focus more on strengthening the defensive and forward positions. One has to question if Liverpool can truly mount a sustained challenge without proper investment into the wings?
The all-knowing rag that is The Sun is reporting today that Rafa Benitez has had enough of Villa boss Martin O’Neill and his childish games, and has told the Birmingham club that if they want to make a profit, they better be prepared to take the current £15m deal plus additional clauses or watch the Anfield club walk. With Martin O’Neill adamant that Gareth Barry isn’t leaving the club for any less than £15m, Rafa Benitez is looking to raid his old club Valencia for winger David Silva.
This will be good news for many Liverpool fans, who feel the club already have enough talent in a midfield which includes Gerrard, Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano, and those who feel the club is just a world-class winger away from contending for the Premier League crown.
Although Barry wants to move, Benitez may not have the financial backing to sign him, especially with the imminent signing of Dossena. Which will disappoint the England international.
“Gareth has spoken to Martin since he returned from England’s game in Trinidad and told him how he feels.
“At this stage of his career Gareth wants to be playing Champions League football and believes this is his chance to do it.” Barry’s agent told The Sun
However, Silva could leave for Anfield for far less than his £20m price tag, as Valencia look to pull themselves out of their precarious financial postion. Rafa is hoping to land him for just ten million pounds.
Key to the Silva transfer will be Liverpool’s chief scout Eduardo Macia, who was close with the Spanish superstar in his time working at the Mestalla Stadium.
Publically, Valencia insist they do not want to lose one of their most influential players, but privately they are reported to have contacted several clubs throughout Europe to gauge interest in Silva and David Villa(The Telegraph)
With Silva on one side, and the ever-improving Ryan Babel on the other, many a Liverpool fan will have their fingers crossed that this could be the real deal.

Martin O’Neill is a spiky character, yet it’s fair to say that the majority of Aston Villa fans love him for it. Despite doing his utmost to try and keep Gareth Barry at the club, it appears that it’s a case of ‘when’, not ‘if’ the skipper will jump ship. The ‘when’ depends on the thrifty football club that is Liverpool FC rummaging around in those deep pockets and stumping up another few million to secure the midfielder’s signature.
