So Saturday Evening’s Football League round-up show was ‘accidentally’ interrupted and replaced for a good 30 seconds by footage from the film on ITV that was airing at the same time. That film was the god awful Blue Crush however the switch over just happened to coincide with the film’s most captivating scene, when Kate Bosworth (officially the worst actress to have ever drawn breath) is filmed paying a visit to the lavatory!
Now was this is pure coincidence? A movie of 104 minutes and the exact moment this televisual glitch occurs is for the duration of the ‘toilet’ scene? So there are two schools of thought, 1) the person in charge of feeds wasn’t paying attention and somehow flicked a switch (it does happen, having worked in television for some time, i have known such things to occur) 2) the BBC is keen to boost audience figures for the show so makes a calculated attempt to derive a new audience hoping to see a similar ‘glitch’ next week, when no doubt Basic Instinct will happen to be on the other channel!
Nutcase Barton would be perfect for the job, providing he can read and write of course!
I am a big fan of the player blogs that have livened up the BBC Football pages over the past few years but it appears that some sort of Curse befalls anyone who decides to pen their thoughts on the game.
It’s been proven time and again that the best footballers don’t often make the best managers. [Read the rest of this entry »]

Blackburn chairman John Williams reckons a new managerial appointment should be made at the end of the week, and it’s looking like one of two candidates at the moment. [Read the rest of this entry »]
Following in the hallowed footsteps of Andy Gray, who turned down the Everton job, Alan Shearer declared on the BBC yesterday that he wasn’t interested in the Blackburn manager’s job after some gentle probing by Gary Lineker. Shearer said:
“The situation is that I was very flattered to get a call off of Blackburn’s chief executive John Williams.
“He asked me if I wanted to be included on a shortlist for the manager’s job, which I politely declined because of a lot of commitments that I have; namely this one.” (BBC)
Come on Al, you’re one of the greatest English strikers and you have swapped the barnstorming life of a goalscorer for a comfy couch and some mind-numbingly boring punditry, is that really more fun than management? Or are you waiting for Kevin Keegan to be dethroned at St James’ Park?
Although it’s unclear as to when Sir Alex Ferguson will step down as manager of Manchester United (and boy, won’t we all miss him), there appears to be a growing consensus that Carlos Queiroz is the ready-made replacement for the Scot. After all, he’s been part of the Old Trafford furniture for quite some time and it’s clear that the assistant coach is pretty pretty hands-on when it comes to training sessions and tactics.
The BBC report that Manchester United’s chief executive has dropped a very large hint that the man from Portugal could be Fergie’s natural successor within the next three years. SAF has confirmed that he’ll no longer be manager by this point, with promotion from within looking likely.
“We are making sure our squad is continually reviewed and improved as necessary and the age of the squad is right so that, when Alex does decide to retire, anyone taking over has a fantastic squad with the right age profile,” said Gill. “We also have an assistant manager who will be very much in the frame in Carlos Queiroz. He’s clearly a key part of our success. If you look at what Liverpool achieved in their very successful years during the ’70s and ’80s [that] was through internal appointments. Carlos is a key factor in all the success we’ve achieved over the last couple of seasons.”
Many people will barely be able to remember a time when Sir Alex Ferguson wasn’t manager of Manchester United and it’s clear that he will leave an enduring legacy at the club when he steps down. At least some continuity will be achieved if Queiroz takes over the reins, although they will stil be pretty big shoes to fill.
You can bet that when Sven-Goran Eriksson hooked up with Benfica representatives this week, they didn’t just chew the fat about the good old days when the Swede led them to three league titles and the 1990 European Cup final. The BBC reports that the soon-to-be-ex Manchester City manager appears to be on the brink of leaving the north-west of England and instead head to sunnier climes to take charge of the Portuguese club for the third time in his career.
A Benfica statement confirmed talks had taken place, but said: “No details of the contract, namely salaries and timing, have been discussed.”
Eriksson said: “I’m considering the offer and it could be a step forward in my career – let’s see what happens.”
The haste in which Sven has courted this potential suitor effectively brings an end to his one-season reign at Manchester City. He certainly had an impact on the club right away, with the ‘Ol’ Blue Eyes is Back’ posters being plastered all over the city. The former England manager has brought in some quality talent this season and laid some decent foundations for whoever comes in as his replacement. It just seems odd that Shinawatra has agreed a three-year deal with Sven and decided to renege after one year.
Say what you like about Craig Bellamy (feel free to sum it up in six words!), but the Welsh hot-head of a striker is not all bad. Yes, he might have beaten John-Arne Riise up with a golf club while at Liverpool and OK, he might have had a heated exchange of words with a young lady in a Cardiff nightclub. However, the BBC report that he’s also prepared to put his money firmly where his mouth is by building a football academy in Sierra Leone.
“Because of the war, children haven’t had any opportunity,” he said.
“They haven’t been thrown a football, they’ve been thrown a gun.
“Now we can give them a chance that their fathers or grandfathers never had. That’s the buzz for me.
“I’m not looking to find and sell players. I’m not an agent. I want to make it clear that if any player does make it, any fee goes straight back into the academy.”
The article reports that the ex-Liverpool striker has set up the Craig Bellamy Foundation, ploughing £650k into creating a better life for the children growing up in this war-torn region. It’s good to see a minted footballer doing something positive with his wealth, albeit an unlikely one. Whatever next, Ashley Cole helping with the relief operation in Burma! That would change our opinion of the Chelsea defender!
Avram Grant might have played the yes/no game in Thursday’s post-match conference after his Chelsea team beat Everton 1-0. However, he was a bit more forthcoming when speaking to the BBC on television and radio afterwards. The Blues boss is clearly unhappy with the way he’s been represented in certain quarters of the media and you couldn’t blame him for being curt after Chelsea’s hard-fought victory. However, read on for his real thoughts!
“It was a good win. We were behind Manchester United from the beginning of the season so it never was in our hands. It is in our hands to do our job and that is what we did.
“On Monday after the game [a 1-1 draw against Wigan] we spoke about how we conceded the late goal.
“Even towards the end we were attacking with six or seven players and they scored the equaliser on the counter-attack, but I like it because we want to change the style of the team.
“We controlled the game. We had chances to make it 2-0 or 3-0 but our last pass was a bit sloppy. We scored a fantastic goal though.
“Tonight we wanted to score again to wrap it up, but in the last few minutes it is important to make sure you win the points.
“Despite all the speculation, it’s not hard to focus. It’s just part of life.
“I have been in life for many years now and pressure is part of it. Journalists who say we are having a bad season are trying to do their job, but maybe sometimes not in the right way.”
This constant denial that the title has always been out of Chelsea’s hands does Grant no favours. He’s also continued to omit any mention of whether his team are still in the title race, although he does give an impression that they’re simply chasing United to the finishing line now, rather than have a real chance of catching them.
