Benfica star Rodrigo Moreno is being tracked by Arsenal.

Arsenal are monitoring Rodrigo, who had a loan spell at Bolton, says the Sunday Mirror.

Rodrigo is also wanted by former club Real Madrid.

Rodrigo Moreno has seen his star rise this season after failing to make an impact at Real Madrid. The young Spanish striker spent a couple of years trying to make the mark at the Bernabeu before moving to Benfica where his career has begun to take off this term.

The 21 year old striker has netted nine goals in 18 matches this season to help Benfica to overhaul FC Porto at the top of the table. Rodrigo has perhaps impressed most with the Spanish Under 21 international side, scoring seven goals in five appearances.

Arsene Wenger has reportedly had the Brazilian born striker scouted on a number of occasions this season and is now a summer target for the North London side.

Arsenal are rivaling Manchester United for Benfica midfielder Javi Garcia.

An approach from United to sign the 24-year-old in the final days of the transfer window was rejected, but it has been reported he will move to Old Trafford this summer instead.

No actual agreement is in place however, and The Times report that Arsenal have made a tentative inquiry about his availability.

Javi Garcia has become a target of many of Europe’s elite and the 24 year old may well be keen on pursuing a move away from Benfica in the summer and a move to the English top tier may tempt the £20m rated Spaniard.

Arsene Wenger may feel the addition of more steel in the Arsenal midfield is in order, despite the fact that the Gunners boss does have Cameroon international Alex Song to call upon and up and coming terrier Emmanuel Frimpong impressing greatly but perhaps the Emirates Stadium boss sees the experienced Benfica man as a player who can offer that bit more to his side.

Garcia came through the ranks at Real Madrid but struggled to get first team action at the Bernabeu in his first spell at the La Liga giants and had a little more luck when he returned after a season at Osasuna before leaving Spain for Lisbon, where his career has gone from strength to strength.

The powerfully built central midfielder is now in his third season at Benfica and has helped The Eagles to open a five point lead over arch rivals Porto whilst also booking passage into the Champions League knockout stage.

Javi Garcia is more than just an enforcer he also has good awareness and an eye for goal, notching up eight goals last term. The Benfica man is also a good distributor of the ball and rarely gives away possession.

Portuguese newspaper Record claim Manchester United and City scouts were spotted at Benfica’s match against Santa Clara yesterday.

Both clubs were believed to be scouting the Benfica playmaker Nicolas Gaitan, who is very highly rated at the Stadium of Light, and it is thought that a summer transfer is in the offing.

Gaitan can play anywhere across the attacking midfield line, from a position behind the strikers to either flank.

He tends to play on the left flank though, as his magic wand of a left foot can be utilised to glorious effect there.

It is likely that both Manchester clubs would want Gaitan to play in the centre of midfield though should he sign, with particularly Man Utd suffering from a sub-par midfield compared to the rest of the elite top teams.

Indeed, Paul Scholes has had to come out of retirement to aid the Red Devils in their quest to regain the Premier League title.

“Ever since the pre-season, it has been said that Manchester United are following me,” said Gaitan earlier this month.
“Then, Benfica met United in the Champions League group stage and I did not expect that Ferguson would talk about me before and after the game.

“He said Benfica had good players and named me, which is something that makes me very happy. I did not expect to be praised by a coach like him, we all know what he represents in football.

“I am proud that one of the best clubs in the world want me, but I am only thinking about Benfica.

“If the transfer happens, it has to be good for Benfica and myself.”

For Manchester City, the need to sign Gaitan is slightly less clear.

Roberto Mancini’s centre midfield of Gareth Barry and Yaya Toure is an impressively effective one.

Whilst Barry is hardly the most glamorous of players, his disciplined role nicely balances against Toure’s lung busting runs from the middle.

It seems more likely that Samir Nasri will be the man to lose his place on the left hand side of the midfield – or that Mancini would attempt to switch formation from his standard 4-3-3 / 4-4-1-1.
