Blackburn Rovers manager Steve Kean is over-the-moon Phil Jones signed a new contract after fending off interest from Arsenal and Chelsea.

Jones, 19, is a highly-rated prospect but will stay at Ewood Park until 2016.

The teenager broke into the first-team 11 months ago and signed a five-year deal last summer, but Kean recognised the club had to do more.

The defender, who also plays in midfield, received rave reviews for his performances linking him with moves to London.

Both Arsenal and Chelsea were looking for a defender in January, with the Blues bringing in David Luiz while the Gunners will wait until the summer.

Kean confirmed there was interest in the England U21 international but he believes Blackburn is ideal for Jones to develop.

“There is always going to be interest. The big clubs are always going to try and recruit people of Phil’s stature,” said Kean.

“We had enquiries from a couple of big clubs, and without naming any names, we’re delighted he decided to pledge his future to us.

“They were only tentative enquiries. There was nothing concrete put in front of us.

“But it says a lot for us as a club that players like Phil can commit themselves to us, even if there is interest from bigger clubs.

“What we give them is a platform on which to play, with academy and reserve players promoted to the first team and given a chance to mix in with the quality senior players we already have here.

“If somebody came in with a really big bid then we would speak to Phil and the people who look after him, who are very sensible and who give him good solid advice.

“But hopefully as he keeps playing, progressing and developing, we’ll keep hold of him for the term of his contract.”

Is this another attempt to gain publicity?

The list of big-name stars Blackburn have failed to tempt to Ewood Park reads: Fabiano, Ronaldinho, Juan Roman Riquelme, Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona (no, not to play but to manage).

On paper what a line-up it could be. In reality it would be an unmitigated disaster.

Imagine the egos. How would honest, hard-working professionals like Ryan Nelsen and Paul Robinson cope with self-centred stars.

But let us all be honest – and that includes Blackburn fans – none of those deals were ever going to happen. South American players notoriously hate cold, wet climates. Playing football next to the Pennines is not what they want.

And it is unfair for Blackburn fans to be treated in this way. Promise of a star player, only for the player to laugh and say no is disrespectful to a proud club.

The owners have to take reponsibility and stop using the club as tool to gain publicity for their chicken business.

No one had heard of Venky’s before the takeover and now they are using a Premier League club, with the help of Kentaro Sports Agency, to showcase their company.

They should be looking to progress Blackburn and Europe should be a realistic aim for this club but Venky’s are turning Blackburn into a laughing stock.

Show respect to the proud club of Blackburn or Rovers fans should set the foxes after the chicken farmers.

Birmingham City have blocked any path out of St. Andrew’s for midfielder Sebastian Larsson by rejecting the Swedish midfielder’s transfer request. Larsson had asked for a move after the Blues rejected offers from Aston Villa, Blackburn and West Ham. Larsson’s agent reported that the Blues wanted to get rid of the midfielder in pre-season and then made a u-turn and offered Larsson a new contract. Then, Birmingham boss Alex McLeish said he wanted to extend the deal, but Per Johnson has stated that they were e-mailed with a offer from Newcastle.

The plug was pulled on all talks with Newcastle, after terms weren’t agreed between the two clubs, and Birmingham have since decided that they want to keep the Swede. Larsson and his agent are said to be fuming over the back and forth movements from the football club and want a quick way out, with a number of Premiership and Championship clubs lining up to offer the midfielder, signed from Arsenal in 2007, a way out of St. Andrew’s.
