Newcastle United 5-1 Cardiff City Championship Highlights (Video)

by Mad Dog and Glory on February 6th, 2010 7 comments

Andy Carrol was the catalyst for a magnificent Toon Army performance at St James’ Park on Friday night. The giant Newcastle United striker scored two and laid on another all in the first 15 minutes.

Then Peter Lovenkrands put in a fantastic cameo effort for the final half hour scoring twice after coming on as a sub. The Bluebirds scored a late consolation but nothing could take the gloss off this five star show that took Newcastle United 6 points clear at the top of the Championship table.

‘I should be starting every game’ claims Arsenal player: Do supporters agree with him?

by stresster on February 16th, 2009 12 comments

This striker has scored seven goals for the Gunners this season, and he’s clearly frustrated at the fact he continues to be no more than a squad player. With Eduardo returning to the Arsenal fold, he has issued a public plea to Arsene Wenger that he should be starting every match. [Read the rest of this entry »]

Ramsey chooses Arsenal over Man Utd: Arsene 1-0 Sir Alex

by Dexter on June 11th, 2008 8 comments

Cardiff wonderkid Aaron Ramsey, rather frothily described by the Independent as “the outstanding talent of his generation” has opted to sign for Arsenal over Man Utd. Although Ferguson’s men gnawed away at Arsenal’s early season lead, and the Gunners tailed off to third place, the first transfer blood of this summer looks to be going to Arsene’s men.
The Independent reveals the reason for Ramsey’s decision:

“Ferguson was the only one of the three managers in serious pursuit of Ramsey – the other being Everton’s David Moyes – who did not break off from his summer holidays to meet the Cardiff City player, instead delegating the meeting to a member of his staff. Ferguson is usually such a brilliant recruiter of young players – his trips to meet parents have so often proved the clincher in deals – but it was Wenger who gave Arsenal’s interest the personal touch by inviting Ramsey out on a private jet to Switzerland, where he is working as a television pundit at Euro 2008.”

Ferguson was also under the impression that Ramsey would be happy to be loaned back to Cardiff, but Wenger apparently promised the young starlet that he would stay and progress at Arsenal. All in all, it looks like the Lord of the Ferg was thoroughly outfoxed on this one…

Who would you sign for if you were Aaron Ramsey; Manchester United, Arsenal, Everton or Liverpool?

by Dexter on June 10th, 2008 49 comments

Picture the scene, you’re a young up-and-coming wonderkid who currently plies his trade for Cardiff City, but after a strong season, a tsunami of clubs are crashing in, wanting to pull you away to the Premier League. So who would you choose? Manchester United and the Lord of the Ferg, where you probably wouldn’t get a sniff of first-team football for at least a year? Arsenal and Prof Wenger – where it wouldn’t be inconceivable to start quite a few games? Liverpool and Rafa the Gaffer (although the Spaniard’s interest is apparently waning) – or perhaps Everton and the Moyesiah – and signing for the blue half of Merseyside could be the best route to first-team football, but your wages would be miniscule and you would probably still be paid in groats.

The choice is yours, who would you choose?

Liverpool in £10m bidding war: Can Rafa beat Sir Alex?

by Mr Comfort on June 1st, 2008 86 comments

Fierce rivals Liverpool and Manchester United are going head to head in the pursuit of one of the brightest talents in the UK, but who will win?

Manchester United have upped their offer for Cardiff City teenager Aaron Ramsey to £10million to head off a late move by Liverpool.
Sir Alex Ferguson is bidding £5m up front for the midfielder, but insiders have revealed extra performance based payments could double that figure. (The Mirror)

17 year old Ramsey looks like a very level headed individual, he has managed to manfully deal with the constant speculation about his imminent move away from Ninian Park. It seems that United are looking to scare the Reds off by doubling the original bid made by Rafa, what now? Do Liverpool fans think it is well worth forking out such a huge fee for the teenager? Do United fans feel that they have more to offer the Caerphilly kid?

£5 million starlet trying to ignore Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United tug-of-war

by stresster on May 27th, 2008 16 comments

But will one of the ‘Big Four’ make an offer that Cardiff City just can’t refuse? It’s clear that Aaron Ramsey is a star in the making, with the 17-year-old having already featured in an FA Cup final during his short career to date. However, despite potential overtures from Old Trafford, Anfield and The Emirates, the midfielder has told BBC that he’s happy to stay put for the time being.

“I don’t take much notice to be honest, I just ignore the speculation.

“I will do what I want to at the end of the day, but I am happy at Cardiff.”

The Welshman will be looking to avoid the path of Theo Walcott, who has only had limited first-team opportunities with Arsenal since signing from Southampton. There is the possibility that he will be snapped up in the summer, only to be loaned back out to a Championship club, even Cardiff. However, it seems as though there’s a wise head on those young shoulders.

Everton launch another Brit bid for £5m Cardiff hero

by Mr Comfort on April 8th, 2008 7 comments

Fresh on the heels of an apparent bid for Barnsley FA Cup hero Brian Howard, David Moyes appears to be lining up another Championship player who has very much enjoyed this year’s Cup delights – Cardiff’s £5m rated midfielder Joe Ledley.

Everton are interested in the Welsh international, who said of the interest: “A couple of clubs were interested in me but it was always down to the club if they wanted to sell me. It wasn’t down to me. I know if I keep working hard like I did in the semi-final anything can happen. I just go out there and play.

“Everyone would love to play in the Premier League. Anything can happen. I just have to keep working hard every game.” (Daily Telegraph)

I am sure there are some Cardiff fans who will hope that this year’s run will negate the need to sell to balance the books. However, you can’t stand in the way of ambition and it seems that a fair few young Bluebirds want to leave the nest and follow teammate Chris Gunter to the Premier League.

Of course it is by no means impossible that Dave Jones’s side may well have a shot at reaching the play-offs if they can win their games in hand.

Cinderella WILL go to the ball; loophole could see Cardiff in the UEFA Cup!

by Dexter on April 8th, 2008 1 comment

The Times reports that everyone’s favourite plucky Welsh battlers Cardiff City could be off to Europe after all. As it stands, if Cardiff beat Portsmouth in the FA Cup final they would be robbed of the (dubious) joys of the UEFA Cup because they are technically a Welsh team, and only qualify for Europe through “competitions run by the FA of Wales”. It appears that the FA are sensitive to Cardiff’s unique situation though, with an FA spokesman saying:

“We have not ruled out Cardiff being entered into Europe via the Fa Cup should they win it.

“Further conversations need to take place, but we would expect to have clarification before the final.”

With the FA promising to bring up Cardiff’s case during the next top level meeting, the potential horror situation of the Fa Cup winners being forbidden entry into the UEFA cup looks to be receding.

Will Portsmouth be first team to win FA Cup without decent striker?

by stresster on April 7th, 2008 1 comment

Harry Redknapp is chuffed to bits and has every right to be. Not only has he steered his Portsmouth team to the FA Cup final against Cardiff, he’s also done this without having a decent striker throughout his club’s run in the competition. The Daily Telegraph report his delight after winning 1-0 against West Brom.

“The owner was here. He’s delighted,” Redknapp said. “He sent me a text from the League Cup final, which said: ‘My dream is to go to Wembley for a Cup final, can you take your team to Wembley?’ And I thought, ‘oh no, someone else wants a ticket’, so I read it again and it was Sacha [Gaydamak].”

“I signed a new contract at the start of the year,” he said. “The owner has backed me. New stadium, new training ground. The club is in great shape. When I get in that car tonight, I will go ‘ get in there!’ Two glasses of red and I’ll be singing. Then drive home.”

Pompey’s cup adventure began at Ipswich in January when David Nugent scored a rare goal for his club. Goals from the midfield duo of Diarra and Kranjcar were enough to see off Plymouth, while a fortunate own goal landed the win at Preston. Sully Muntari’s penalty then knocked Manchester United out of the competition, before Kanu’s scrambled effort saw the Baggies on Saturday. While Jermain Defoe is banging them in for Portsmouth in the Premier League, it’s quite an achievement that this team can win the FA Cup with the likes of Kanu, Baros and Nugent up front – hardly a trio to strike fear into any defence!
