Carlos Queiroz, possibly the most aggressive defender of Ronaldo’s position as a Man Utd player in the face of Real Madrid interest, has now retreated to a neutral position. [Read the rest of this entry »]
Most of us will remember Chelsea’s 2-1 victory against Man United last season, with Michael Ballack’s late winner causing all sorts of mayhem. There were words of fury from Fergie and Queiroz, an on-pitch scuffle between Patrice Evra and a Stamford Bridge groundsman, while Rio Ferdinand threw his toys out of the pram in the tunnel and accidentally kicked a female steward. On 16th August, Manchester United will begin their defence of the Premier League title against Newcastle, although there’ll be a familiar face missing from the dug-out. [Read the rest of this entry »]
The Daily Mail is today squealing with excitement like an overexcited schoolgirl after bumping into David Beckham. The reason? Carlos Queiroz has apparently accepted Portugal’s invitation to take their coacing job recently vacated by Big Phil Scolari. [Read the rest of this entry »]
Manchester United assistant Carlos Queiroz has never been one to hide his true feelings on any subject. It was only a couple of weeks ago that Queiroz made a ludicrous claim that Real Madrid were trying to turn current winger Cristiano Ronaldo into the next Christopher Columbus by turning the Portuguese sensation into a Spanish product. Like a couple of young lads slinging mud at one another, the ongoing Cristiano Ronaldo battle between Manchester United and Real Madrid has been almost comical at times. However, after reading Carlos Queiroz’s recent comments about the current situation, the Portuguese assistant is on the verge of taking this whole ordeal into a level that goes far beyond tabloid fodder.
Portuguese newspaper Jornal do Noticias are reporting that Queiroz believes that Madrid’s courtship goes far deeper than sheer lust for the top footballer in the world.
“Cristiano Ronaldo will never be Spanish, as they will never take Olivenca again,” he said, referring to the small town on the disputed border between the two countries. “They already did the same with Christopher Columbus, and it now seems they want to naturalise Cristiano Ronaldo. Have they already forgotten what we did to them in the past? We will never lose our patience.” (Jornal do Noticias)
Apparently Queiroz believes that Madrid are trying to “naturalise” the Portuguese winger in an attempt to repeat what Spain did to Christopher Columbus decades ago! So if you’re keeping score at home, the saga has now gone from Madrid prying on Man Utd’s prize winger because they wanted to have the best player in the world, to now being all about Madrid trying to naturalise the Portuguese star into a Spanish sensation. Bless!
Although it’s unclear as to when Sir Alex Ferguson will step down as manager of Manchester United (and boy, won’t we all miss him), there appears to be a growing consensus that Carlos Queiroz is the ready-made replacement for the Scot. After all, he’s been part of the Old Trafford furniture for quite some time and it’s clear that the assistant coach is pretty pretty hands-on when it comes to training sessions and tactics.
The BBC report that Manchester United’s chief executive has dropped a very large hint that the man from Portugal could be Fergie’s natural successor within the next three years. SAF has confirmed that he’ll no longer be manager by this point, with promotion from within looking likely.
“We are making sure our squad is continually reviewed and improved as necessary and the age of the squad is right so that, when Alex does decide to retire, anyone taking over has a fantastic squad with the right age profile,” said Gill. “We also have an assistant manager who will be very much in the frame in Carlos Queiroz. He’s clearly a key part of our success. If you look at what Liverpool achieved in their very successful years during the ’70s and ’80s [that] was through internal appointments. Carlos is a key factor in all the success we’ve achieved over the last couple of seasons.”
Many people will barely be able to remember a time when Sir Alex Ferguson wasn’t manager of Manchester United and it’s clear that he will leave an enduring legacy at the club when he steps down. At least some continuity will be achieved if Queiroz takes over the reins, although they will stil be pretty big shoes to fill.
It’s one thing getting Birmingham promoted and then keeping Wigan afloat in the Premier League, it’s another thing managing some of the best players in the world and pitting your wits against Europe’s finest. Steve Bruce has demonstrated his managerial ability over the past couple of seasons and has the chance to prevent Manchester United from winning the title on Sunday.
However, surely there are others nearer in line to the throne if Sir Alex Ferguson decided to call it a day at the end of the season (although knowing the tenacious Scot, he might last another ten seasons at the helm!)? Sky Sports report that Wigan chairman Dave Whelan won’t stand in the way of the former Sheffield United, Huddersfield, Crystal Palace and Birmingham manager if the Red Devils come calling. Not that Bruce should be holding his breath…
“When United come to choose a new manager, if they go for Steve Bruce you have no chance of standing in their way,” Whelan said in the Daily Star.
“I wouldn’t contemplate doing so if United came for Steve. I would be delighted for him and sorry for the club.
“If Sir Alex wins another European title this year – which I hope he does – he may decide he has had enough.”
If SAF does step down in the summer, who do you think should replace the great man? Many have touted Carlos Queiroz, Fergie’s right-hand man as the natural successor, while some people make a claim for Mark Hughes, another former United great. Whoever takes the reigns will have a tough act to follow!
Carlos Queiroz is tipped to become Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor at Old Trafford and the Manchester United assistant has revealed that the Red Devils only narrowly saw off Real Madrid for the signature of Cristiano Ronaldo. It’s hard to imagine United enjoying so much domestic and European success without the Portuguese winger this season, yet the Daily Telegraph reveal how it was a toss-up between signing two players.
”I had always followed Cristiano’s career,” Queiroz said, ”and delivered my opinion strongly every time we discussed whether to sign him or Quaresma. We were not able to buy both and I was sure about Cristiano. So naturally when I left [in the summer of 2003] I made him my top target for Madrid. He headed the list I gave Jorge Valdano, the sporting director. But fortunately – I say that now – he ended up joining United instead. And it happened through me because Sporting Lisbon, where I was once the manager, used me to ask United to inaugurate their stadium [the Alvalade had been rebuilt for the forthcoming European Championship] by playing a pre-season friendly. So I went to Alex and he was happy to do it. Sporting won 3-1, Cristiano had a fantastic game -and all doubts about him disappeared.”
It took a while for the Manchester United number seven to find his feet at Old Trafford, despite a scintillating debut. He certainly wasn’t the 20+ goal machine we’re seeing this season, proving to be erratic when it came to supplying an end product and often fond of one-too-many stepovers. Quite simply, it’s hard to imagine Manchester United without their star player although there may come a time when they’ll have to get used to him not being around.
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been charged by the English FA for accusing referee Martin Atkinson and his chief Keith Hackett in the wake of United’s 1-0 defeat to Portsmouth in the last 8 of the FA Cup at Old Trafford on Saturday.
This is what Fergie said after the match:
Keith Hackett’s got a lot to answer for in this country, I don’t think he’s doing his job properly.
He’s got his favourites as everyone knows.
He needs to be assessed. I’ll be assessed as a manager, the players will be assessed and the referee should be assessed today — properly — by the right people.
It was an absolute stonewall penalty.
Managers get sacked because of things like that — and he’s going to referee next week? It’s ridiculous.
Fergie’s rage can be justified but he did take the accusations too far. After all, he ought to have paid respect to the referees and since he didn’t, he may as well face the FA music.
His assistant Carlos Queiroz too joins his boss in facing the FA charges after saying this:
The referee is a disgrace, he didn’t do his job.
This referee deserves somebody to come to the side of the pitch after five minutes, give him a red card and pull him out of the game. That is my opinion of this robber.
Actually, blasting the refs for their unintentional blunder is a disgrace and the Man United duo ought to get the punishment.
Here at COS, we’re sure (!) that Carlos Queiroz would have lamented the midweek internationals even if Manchester United had won on Sunday rather than losing 2-1 to City. The words ‘lame’ and ‘scapegoat’ spring to mind when reading his quotes on the BBC website – why can’t managers and their assistants just hold their hands up and say the better team won?
“We believe the team was affected by international call-ups,” said Queiroz.
“But talking about that would be an excuse. It was not our day. We didn’t play well and need to accept that.”
“It was really unusual to see a couple of our players playing so slow, without tempo and making mistakes,” added Queiroz.
“That’s never happened before and if it is a coincidence we will let other people decide.
“The reality is that the players have been affected. Not only the English players but others like Ronaldo and Vidic were not so sharp.”
Manchester City had a fair share of their squad called up for the internationals, including the inspirational Martin Petrov. You would think that the champions involvement in the Champions League would serve as good experience on these occasions. Is this an excuse to rival the grey shirts argument or does Queiroz have a point?
