Keegan expects Newcastle’s stars to stay, but do the fans?

by Terry on May 20th, 2008 8 comments

Despite Newcastle having: 1) An already small squad and, 2) Having released four players from said squad this summer, there are stories linking almost half their squad away from the club, where according to Sky Sports:

Middlesbrough and Aston Villa are said to be keen on James Milner, Rangers are chasing Alan Smith, and Blackburn are keeping tabs on Abdoulaye Faye.

With Obafemi Martins interesting Arsenal and Michael Owen seen as a possible replacement for Dimitar Berbatov should the Bulgarian leave Tottenham, Keegan could have his work cut out during the close season.

Add to that the rumour that Damien Duff has put his house up for sale, Emre is constantly linked with a move away from Tyneside and Liverpool’s interest in Steve Harper, and before we know it Newcastle will be fielding all those youngsters they bought in January next season.

Will these players go? Do Newcastle fans care if they do? With the club also being linked, as per usual, with every single player on the face of the planet, they could surely replace anyone who left.

Duff: Keegan era excites me

by sub on January 31st, 2008 no comments

Newcastle United are a club basking in hype and expectation at the moment with the appointment of old Toon favorite Kevin Keegan in charge. And the players too are joining in the swelling wave of optimism.

Setanta Sports has quoted Newcastle winger Damien Duff as saying that he believes under Keegan, the Geordies would improve and entertain their fans once again. The republic of Ireland international says:

Especially at Newcastle I think the wingers then were a big focal point in the team, along with the strikers. So I can’t wait to start working properly with him. Obviously, he has only been in a week or so and we haven’t had time to work on the training ground with him because of the games, but I’m just really looking forward to the future there with him. It’s really good, really positive. The gaffer has been brilliant, even though we haven’t won a game if you don’t count Stoke [in The FA Cup] since he came here. But the place is buzzing. He’s a God up there, the fans love him.

There’s a lot of hope and expectation in the air but will it all be a matter of much ado about nothing in the end?
