This is a list of 10 of the worst refereeing mistakes in recent years. I have stuck to decisions that I have seen and have video evidence of, if you can think of anymore let me know.

10. Netherlands  v Spain 2010 – Nigel De Jong Kung-Fu Kick

Howard Webb will probably want to forget the 2010 World Cup final. It was supposed to be his finest hour but due to the Netherlands ugly tactics he was left with an impossible task. He brandished 14 yellow cards including a red for Jonny Heitinga, but he was actually very lenient letting Nigel De Jong commit what can only be described as a Kung-Fu kick on Xabi Alonso. If he had done that in the street he would be arrested, but Webb ultimately bottled it and just gave a yellow card.

Manchester City’s newest striker Sergio Aguero will aim to embarass Premier League defenders with his skills and tricks.

The 23-year-old, who has called himself ”the Che Guevara of modern soccer”, claims that he will revolutionise the way football is played.

He will cost the Champions League newcomers around £38 million, and all that is now left is for the club to confirm the deal.

Only four players – Lionel Messi, David Villa, Diego Forlan and Frederic Kanoute – scored more La Liga goals than Aguero since he moved to Atletico from Independiente in 2006.

The Argentina international was quick to distance himself from comparisons to his father-in-law, Diego Maradona, but says he has the same ability to change the face of the game.

“No one will ever be exactly like Maradona again but I really think that every so often there is a total revolution in football and someone needs to be the revolutionary who starts things off,” he told the Sun.

“That’s me. Maradona made some ‘noise’ in his day and I want to roar a bit in my day – now.

“I like tricks, I like to dazzle, I like to be able to score a goal with one leg bent round the other so that you smack the ball into the net with your wrong foot.

“Dribbling and leaving your opponent on his backside is what life is for.

“If I achieve what I want to then I’ll mark a distinct era in football. I’m the Che Guevara of modern soccer.”

Argentina legend Diego Maradona is said to be in good health after he and his girlfriend Veronica Ojeda were involved in a car crash.

They both avoided serious injuries when the former Barcelona and Napoli star collided with a bus near his Buenos Aires home.

Maradona, widely seen as one of the best soccer players in history, underwent routine tests after the accident in the capital’s Ezeiza suburb.

The former player’s mother is in hospital at the moment and local media said he was on his way to visit her when the accident took place.

The 50-year-old is waiting to start a new coaching job at Al Wasl in the United Arab Emirates after failing to keep his last job as head of the national team.

Earlier this week, he demanded more support for Argentina as Lionel Messi, team-mates and coach Sergio Batista came under fire from media and fans for their performance at the Copa America.

Maradona was said to have hurt his knee and Ojeda her hip, but Oscar Sico, director at Hospital de Ezeiza, allayed fears over the severity of their injuries.

“The two are in a perfect condition, they’ve hardly suffered any injuries and they came to the hospital by themselves as a precautionary measure,” Sico said.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.

Argentina legend Ossie Ardiles claims Barcelona star Lionel Messi is the greatest footballer ever – even better than Pele and Diego Maradona.

The former Tottenham Hotspur player and manager says the only difference between Messi and ex-team-mate Maradona is that the 23-year-old is better.

Ardiles, who helped nurture Maradona for the national side, believes Messi is at a higher level than the greats because the Catalan hero has to play with more pressure.

“I think there is only one player you can compare with Messi, and that is Maradona, and in many ways they are very similar,” Ardiles said.

“But for some time I have thought that Diego could never be surpassed, and nor could Pele, but no longer.

“I would now say that Lionel Messi will go down in history as the No1 player of all time, the best that there ever was.

“The big difference is that Maradona played in Argentina, then in Italy, while Pele stayed in Brazil, and during their time the pressures were less intense than they are now.

“Messi is under pressure all the time, and has to play in incredibly high intensity games all of the time, the Champions League being the perfect example.”

Speculation is growing that Blackburn Rovers’ owners have lost patience with manager Steve Kean and will replace him with an Argentinian pairing to put the club on the football map.

Venky’s, who bought the club for £23million last November, will ditch the boss, who has failed to impress since controversially taking over from Sam Allardyce.

The Indian-based company has already identified his successor in Argentina legend Diego Maradona, who they hope will persuade compatriot Sergio Aguero to move to the North-West.

The publicity-hungry Venky’s are desperate to announce themselves to the footballing world and believe this is the way to do it.

The board has close links with sport agencies Kentaro and SEM, who are already in negotiations with the pair.

The news is a blow to manager Kean who has struggled to fulfill his promise of turning Blackburn into a European team.

He took over from Allardyce, apparently sacked for his style of play, in December but is struggling to stave off relegation.

Maradona was last seen managing his country in the World Cup where they reached the quarter-finals before losing to Germany.

He won many plaudits for his style of play and man-management and is certainly a colourful character, but will not come cheap and is hoping for a £10million one-year rolling contract.

Venky’s hope he can persuade his son-in-law Aguero to join him at Ewood Park in a sensational £50million deal from Atletico Madrid.

The 22-year-old is seen as the ideal big-name signing that Blackburn have been craving, but failed with bids for Ronaldinho, David Beckham and Luis Fabiano.

Time for new Blackburn Rovers owners to demonstrate their vision for the club?

One would hope so.

Venky’s Group have subsidised two loans in Roque Santa Cruz from Manchester City and Jermaine Johnson from Schalke 04, as well as Herold Goulon on a two year deal.

They have also promised manager Steve Kean limited support in the transfer market, but who would strengthen the ranks at Ewood Park though with the funds available?

Certainly not the mooted moves for either Ronaldinho as a player or Diego Maradona as manager, but here are ten potential transfer options.

1. Victor Ruiz

With Christopher Samba linked with Aston Villa and Arsenal, Blackburn are being linked with plenty of central defenders. One of the more interesting names on that list is Espanyol player Victor Ruiz Torre, who has had a brilliant first half of the season.

His club were 5th in La Liga heading into the winter break, but financial troubles may lead them to sell the 21 year-old for just £4m.

Blackburn would do well to secure the signature of the promising young Spaniard, but they may well have some competition.

2. Mauricio Victorino

According to the Daily Mail, Blackburn are fighting it out with Newcastle for Uruguay defender Mauricio Victorino.

It’s certainly possible, and Victorino had a very fine World Cup indeed, but it is also difficult to see a 5’9″ centre back at Ewood Park. Victorino may well possess a phenomenal leap like Roberto Ayala in his prime, or Tim Cahill today, but his transfer would certainly be a risk.

Teams tend to play the ball on the ground and in front of teams more often on the international stage, but in the Premier League there will be no such luxury.

Victorino may have performed excellently in the World Cup, but to paraphrase what Andy Gray said about Lionel Messi with tongue firmly in cheek: could he do it on a Wednesday night in Stoke?

3. Sebastian Larsson

Blackburn Rovers have someone highly capable of delivering the ball with his left foot in Morten Gamst Pedersen, but with El Hadji Diouf reportedly on his way out – due to not fitting in with the club’s vision of a family image – there will be a vacant space on the right.

His cultured approach and fine delivery make him a useful outlet for his side, but unless he signs a deal he will continue to attract attention.

Larsson is available for around £2m from Birmingham because his contract runs out in the summer. Having failed to agree terms with Newcastle, the move collapsed, but if Venky’s can offer him what he desires.

4. Shaun Wright-phillips

Shaun Wright-phillips is widely known to be available in this transfer window, with Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini openly admitting his club would welcome offers.

In some ways, the England winger is the antithesis to Sebastian Larsson – speedy and a good dribbler, but often woeful with his passing.

If Blackburn want to add a counterattacking element to their play, they could certainly do worse than Wright-Phillips at £4m, and with his powerful shot he certainly has goals in him.

5. Robbie Keane

Another player with a Birmingham connection, but Robbie Keane will not be joining Alex McLeish’s Blues side.

The club say Keane wanted too much money. The player says he never received an offer.

However, irrespective of the non-move to Birmingham, Robbie Keane is a proven Premier League forward with the 11th most goals in the competition’s history (122). He is also the top scorer ever for the Republic of Ireland with 45 goals from 104 appearances.

Blackburn could certainly use someone of his qualities, but at a mooted £6m he may prove too dear.

6. Mauro Formica

He isn’t Diego Maradona, but he is an Argentine no. 10.

Mauro Formica is rumoured to be on his way to Ewood Park to provide some competition to David Dunn in attacking central midfield. A tricky playmaker for Newell’s Old Boys, Formica was widely expected to secure a £3.5m transfer to Galatasaray in Turkey, but the move fell through.

Perhaps the 22 year-old will find his feet in the Premier League with Blackburn.

7. James Collins

This rumour doing the rounds merely reiterates the possibility of Samba leaving the club, but James Collins of Aston Villa would be a decent signing for Blackburn – and cheap too, particularly if a swap deal can be arranged.

An experienced campaigner with West Ham and Villa, Collins might look a minimum of 40, but in fact is just 27.

Aston Villa’s solid defence last season was built on the brilliant partnership between himself and Richard Dunne, but with Gerard Houllier taking over from Martin O’Neill, the watertight unit has become porous.

Perhaps Steve Kean could be the man to bring Collins back to his best.

8. Nils Petersen

Energie Cottbus striker Nils Petersen was scouted by Sam Allardyce before he was sacked by Blackburn Rovers, and the club continue to be linked to a £2m move.

The 22 year-old plays in the second tier of German football, where he has scored an impressive 19 goals in 33 appearances.

The German striker is 6’2″ and possesses a great leap, but whether he could adapt quickly to the English top flight is a question that remains unanswered.

9. Pablo Daniel Osvaldo

The second Espanyol player in this list, Osvaldo signed for the Spanish club for €5m in August 2010.

The Argentina born player, 25, is a quick striker who has come into his element in La Liga after a nomadic series of moves around Europe. He has seven goals in 14 games so far this season, which is a record that many of Blackburn’s current forward line would envy.

Osvaldo possesses an Italian passport, making a work permit a non-issue, while again Espanyol’s financial problems make any saleable asset potentially on the market.

Diego Maradona will hold talks next month about bossing an English club – and Blackburn could be favourites to land him.
The Argentina legend had discussions with Rovers after they sacked Sam Allardyce in December.

He said: “In February I am going to England to listen to a firm offer. If they convince me, I may take it up. I am not desperate. I know that some day I will coach another team.”

New owners Venky’s put first-team coach Steve Kean in charge until the end of the season after firing Allardyce.

But Venky’s, who bought Rovers in November, admitted their interest in Maradona, 50.

Chairwoman Anuradha Desai said: “We thought about Maradona as a coach after we took over. Talks were at the initial stage then, but there is no development on that front yet.”

Reports in Argentina suggest Maradona is off to Fulham, where he was a guest of owner Mohamed Fayed last November.

But a source at Craven Cottage insisted: “It’s not us.”

This is probably not news that current boss Steve Kean will be happy about but just how likely is it that Diego Maradona will take the helm at Ewood Park? The club did apparently try to sign Ronaldinho and David Beckham in the past week but failed to capture either and is a move for the Argentine even a sensible thing to do?

Yes he did a good job at the World Cup, to a point, but one wonders if the former playing legend has what it take to succeed as a club coach and it would be an expensive mistake in our view for Blackburn’s new owners to look for overly ambitious ways to build up the profile of a club that under Sam Allardyce was doing pretty well for itself.
