It is safe to say that Brazilian international Diego will not be getting a Valentines Day card from former boss Steve McClaren. Late on in the weekend’s fixture away at Hannover, the struggling Woflsburg side win a penalty. New signing Patrick Helmes is the designated spot kick take but Diego thinks otherwise and decides to ignore appeals from the player and then smashes the penalty against the bar. Cue much irritation from McClaren and a huge fine for the player. Spotted on Who Ate All The Pies.

According to multiple sources, Tottenham Hotspur are on the verge of bringing 20-year-old winger Diego Capel to White Hart Lane. They reportedly have agreed to meet the speedster’s buyout clause of 15 million euros. Electric sports reports:
Spurs are poised to confirm a deal to take the left-sided starlet to White Hart Lane having met the 15 million euros ($31.9 million) asking price, according to Diario de Sevilla.
Tottenham are believed to have agreed a four-year deal with the 20-year-old and he is keen to work with Spurs boss Juande Ramos once again after rising to prominence under him in Spain.
While many papers describe this as a done deal, there are still questions that need to be answered. Sevilla president Jose Maria del Nido claims that he has had no talks with Spurs, though sources seem to indicate that this may be untrue. Also, there is talk that Capel is high on the wish-list of a certain Portuguese megalomaniac, who is set to be the new boss of the champions of Serie A. Spurs seem keen to get this deal done before Jose Mourinho’s deal with Inter is completed to make sure he does not foil their plans.
Capel would be the third in a line of talented new midfielders who are likely to be with the club next year. Croatian playmaker Luka Modric has already signed a contract with the London side. Many expect ex-Barcelona phenom Giovani Dos Santos to also join the club this summer. Regardless of what Martin Jol thinks about Spurs’ chance to break into the top four this year, Spurs fans should rest easy knowing that new boss Juande Ramos is moving the team in the right direction.
Capel, like Modric and Dos Santos, is seen as a rising, while unproven star. Like the other two, there has been much debate in the press about how big of an impact he will make. He has been called the new Cristiano Ronaldo, and he has been called the next Jose Antonio Reyes. I expect that he will fall somewhere in the middle. I think this would be a great signing for Spurs, as he is a pacy player with tons of upside. What do you think?
The answer is in the question folks, if Man City are serious about signing a big name, then they will have to show them the money. The Guardian, not normally a paper that engages in wild fantasies, claims that Sven and Thaksin have harnessed their combined brain power and come up wit the perfect signing – Diego Ribas da Cunha or just Diego to his mates.
It looks like Diego could be a good signing for Man City:
“The former Santos player – full name Diego Ribas da Cunha -has a contract with Werder Bremen until 2010 but is thought to be keen on a move to the Premier League.”
A move for Diego is surely a far more enticing prospect than recalcitrant party boy Ronaldinho…
Brazilian international midfielder Diego has been at his lethal best at German Bundesliga club Werder Bremen and there have loads of speculation that he could be moving to a bigger European club in the summer.
Chelsea and Manchester City are touted as the English Football clubs trying to lure the 23-year old former Santos and FC Porto star but Diego himself says that he is happy at Bremen and under the current circumstances, there is no reason for him to seek another club.
Diego insists:
The decision lies with the club. If Klaus Allofs and the president say that I stay, then I play on for Werder.
Speculations and rumours are normal in the football business, which annoy me.
The only thing that bothers me are lies that are disseminated.
Maybe not this summer but Diego would certainly like to try his luck at one of the biggest clubs in Europe sometime soon. After all, he is a class act who needs to perform at the highest level.
Juventus are up against a dead wall again in their desire to lure a gem from the German Bundesliga. The Old Lady of Turin was keen to import Brazilian playmaker Diego from Werder Bremen but it now seems that the move will be snapped off for good.
Goal.com quotes director of sport Klaus Allofs as saying Bremen are not even remotely inclined to talk about Diego with any club. He said:
”Juventus has not submitted any offer, but in any case we do not have the slightest intention whatsoever to discuss a transfer of Diego, not with Juventus nor with any other team.”
So there flies away Juve’s hopes of making a big-name signing in January. Well, there was never a great chance that the Italian giants would have been able to prize Diego away from Bremen. After all, they are second in the Bundesliga and behind Bayern Munich only on goal difference – and Diego, after struggling times in Portugal with FC Porto, would certainly like some silverware with Werder Bremen. Maybe Juve should return in the summer.
