After weeks and weeks of speculation it appears that Newcastle United ‘manager’ Joe Kinnear has finally admitted defeat.
The media have both been speculating about the future of both of Newcastle’s long-term goalkeepers Shay Given and Steve Harper. With Harper signing a new three-year deal this week, it seems that Given is ready to make a move, with Manchester City sniffing around the Republic of Ireland stopper. [Read the rest of this entry »]
As we approach January and the start of the transfer window, the rumours start flying around and with the new found wealth at Eastlands Stadium, most of them revolve around Manchester City, world-record breaking fees and Europe’s biggest stars.
We had the £130+ million raid for European Footballer of the Year Christiano Ronaldo in the summer and we heard hints of a £100+ million move for Real Madrid keeper iker Casillas this week. Now we move on to the next one, and also yet another rebuff for City.
Reports have done the rounds that The Citizens were going to make a move for Valencia’s Euro 2008 starlet for an astonishing £60 million, but his agent has swiftly denied any such possiblity. [Read the rest of this entry »]

The problem with losing Cristiano Ronaldo is that he’s impossible to replace. Nobody is going to score 41 goals for Manchester United next season, not even 31 and maybe not even 21. More firepower will almost certainly be needed if the Red Devils are going to win even the Carling Cup and that’s where Roque Santa Cruz might come in.
The Daily Telegraph report that the Red Devils have declared an interest in last season’s Premier League best bargain, although they may face some stiff competition from Man City, especially as money appears to be no object at Eastlands these days. The Blackburn striker reveals that United are keen for him to strut some of his goalscoring stuff at Old Trafford, could this go some way to making up for their bad news this week?
The 26-year-old said: “The interest from United is real. But I’m busy now so my representatives will handle anything if there is a concrete offer.”
And what about Blackburn Rovers? Losing Mark Hughes is a bad thing and losing their star striker would be pretty shocking too. David Bentley is rumoured to want a move after shunning a new contract, while you can imagine Benni McCarthy is taking one look at this situation and thinking that he also wants out.
However, surely Man United fans would be delighted to see RSC in a United shirt?
It is a generally-held belief that Sven-Goran Eriksson should have been given more time to weave his magic at Manchester City. Although the Swede failed to prevent a series of abject performances away from home last season, he acquired some exciting players and ensured (due to a strong home record) that City finished in the top-half of the Premier League.
However, this wasn’t enough for Dr Thaksin, who hints in the Daily Mail that Sven wasn’t a strong enough disciplinarian at Eastlands and that progress has to be made in a much quicker fashion under Hughes. Does somebody want to tell him that they won’t win the Premier League in the next five years?
‘I want you to know that Sven is a good man. I brought him to the club and supported him with investment (more than £50m spent last season) and we still have a good friendship.
‘But I want this club to advance faster, much faster. Sven is a good football general, but we need more. We must play with more consistency, much more urgency. In the second half of the season, the slide was too bad, too much. We lost 8-1 at Middlesbrough! The shame of that.’
That was actually quite embarrassing, although it was clear that the players heads were down that day due to, yes you’ve guessed it, Shinawatra already making utterances about how he wanted to replace Eriksson. It will be interesting to see how the owner will react if the Citizens get off to a poor start next term, somebody should tell these people that they all can’t finish in the top four!
It’s clear that 9th-place won’t be good enough for Thaksin Shinawatra next season – Sven-Goran Eriksson found that to his cost. Quite simply, Mark Hughes knows he’s under pressure from the loveable ex-Thai prime minister, despite the latter speaking so highly of the Welshman after his appointment. Will Sparky deliver the goods? According to the BBC website, he’s certainly in a determined mood after taking over the reigns at Eastlands:
“The ambition of the club is to challenge at the top table – not only in this country but in Europe,” said ex-Manchester United striker Hughes.
“If we get the right players in right positions it is more than realistic.”
“If I’m successful here I don’t need any stepping stones,” said the 44-year-old.
Although Hughes has previously managed Wales in addition to Blackburn, he’s inexperienced as far as European club management is concerned, faring pretty poorly with Rovers on the occasions they have made it into the UEFA Cup. It will be interesting to see which new faces he brings in, and whether he can persuade the likes of Richard Dunne to stay.
Surely City can’t break into the top four anytime soon can they?
It’s hard to pick many holes in his managerial record, apart from the fact that he is relatively inexperienced having only managed Wales and Blackburn to date. It’s a question of whether he’s taken Rovers ‘as far as he could’, something which Mark Hughes is almost certain to say if indeed he is to be installed as the new manager at Eastlands.
The Press Association report that, while Sven has left the building and Richard Dunne looks almost certain to leave, one of the Manchester City fanzine editors is still predicting a bright future, especially if the Welshman takes charge. However, will many of the City squad only have signed for the club due to the Eriksson factor?
Dave Wallace, editor of the respected King of the Kippax fanzine, feels City are actually in a far healthier state than it initially appears.
“If you look at the fact we have a European campaign to build on, plus the young players and ones like Elano, Martin Petrov and Vedran Corluka, we have a lot to look forward to,” said Wallace.
“We should be in a position to kick on from here and hopefully Mark Hughes, if that is to be who we get, will do that.”
City fans, do you agree with the above sentiments or do you feel that Shinawatra has unnecessarily started rocking the boat after one season of ownership? If Hughes is going to become manager, he’ll have a tough job in motivating a set of players seemingly disillusioned by the boardroom antics of the past few weeks.
City fans must have thought they were in dreamland last season when Elano was curling free-kicks over opposition walls and into the back of the net. However, that would be nothing compared to the arrival of Ronaldinho, with the Daily Mail reporting that the former world player of the year could be turning out at Eastlands next season in a coup that will shock the footballing world.
The article claims that Manchester City will stump up a £200,000-a-week salary to bring the Brazilian forward to the club, thus making him the highest-paid player in the Premier League.
Manchester City will step up their ambitious plan to bring Ronaldinho to England when senior board members fly to his family home in Brazil at the weekend.
Sources here close to owner Thaksin Shinawatra revealed that members of City’s Thai board are expected to meet Ronaldinho face-to-face in Porto Alegre.
It’s clear that the Brazilian has fallen from grace at Barcelona and, while the prospect of Ronaldinho turning out for City may excite the fans, he still has plenty to prove in terms of fitness and commitment, even if he’s keen to move to Manchester. Still, signings don’t come any bigger than this and every Premier League spectator would surely love to see this player in action?
