Are we witnessing the beginning of something special at the Stadium of Light? After all, Sunderland were expected to struggle again this season, albeit not as much as last term when they regularly fought to keep theirs heads above water. After a 2-1 win at Tottenham on Saturday, one of their players isn’t just daring to dream, but making confident assertions regarding how they will perform this campaign. This guy isn’t known for his modesty… [Read the rest of this entry »]
What’s been the best signing of the summer thus far? Robbie Keane to Liverpool? Samir Nasri to Arsenal? Maybe even Luka Modric to Tottenham Hotspur? While the above trio are all talented players, it would be a bold claim to state that they are the best players for their respective national teams, although one of Sunderland’s latest acquisitions has gone that far when talking about himself recently. Call this player what you want but modest he is not! [Read the rest of this entry »]
Roy Keane wasn’t joking when, at the end of last season, he told reporters that he needed a large influx of players to ensure his team continued to survive in the Premier League. The Irishman seems to be set on signing an entirely new team at the moment, with a new face coming in every other day at the Stadium of Light. This latest purchase might split opinion among the Wearside faithful. [Read the rest of this entry »]
Alan Curbishley appears keen to beef up his goalscoring options for next season, which is understandable when you consider that when you take Dean Ashton out of the equation, last season’s next top scorer only managed four league goals. And hence the latest rumour relating to possible attacking targets.
West Ham are after an attacking £10m rated pair as Curbishley looks to capture Manchester United striker Louis Saha and Bolton winger El-Hadji Diouf. (The Guardian)
Now I think that when he isn’t plagued by injury (which is pretty much all the time at present), Louis Saha is a 15-goal-a-season striker in the Premier League and well worth considering a bid for, especially if the price is right. However I do not see the worth in pursuing Diouf as I can’t see him doing much forWest Ham. What do Hammers think of this pair? Worth buying or better to steer clear?
Bolton fans might argue until they’re blue in the face that Kevin Davies is just a robust and physical striker. However, the facts are plain and simple; the striker has collected twelve yellow cards this season, bettering last season’s tally by two (although he did also pick up a red last term). Therefore, it’s a little churlish to start bemoaning your two-game suspension when you play such an ‘in-your-face’ style of football that’s always running the risk of being cautioned. The Independent report that Gary Megson is just ever-so-slightly concerned that his striker is missing for crunch games at Middlesbrough and Tottenham.
Megson went in pursuit of Peter Walton, hoping he could get the referee to rescind the yellow card even though he knew it was beyond the official’s powers. It was a manifestation of desperation and forlorn hope. “It’s a big blow,” the Bolton manager conceded.
Davies, whose importance to the dressing room means that he will travel to Teesside and London despite his ban, felt he had played the ball when he was cautioned for a foul on John Pantsil. “I thought it was a harsh booking,” he said. “In fact, I’m devastated by it. But someone else can step in now and be the hero. I hope it will be a sort of blessing in disguise.”
Have Bolton got somebody else who can ruffle the feathers of opposition defenders, stick their elbow in when it matters and generally make a nuisance of themselves? I suppose there’s always El Hadji Diouf, although it’s clear the Trotters will have to change their playing style with Davies watching from the sidelines.
As the pundits like to say, Bolton have the job half done against Atletico Madrid after they beat the Spanish outfit 1-0 at the Reebok Stadium on Thursday evening. Despite their advantage (courtesy of El Hadji Diouf), along with the fact that the Primera Liga team failed to notch an away goal, Trotters boss Gary Megson insists (courtesy of Sky Sports) that they are still underdogs going into next week’s second leg match in Madrid.
“Atletico have an exceptional squad even without Aguero,” said Megson. “We feel 1-0 is a slender lead to take to an exceptional team like them.
“We do know from my time here we have a good team, a solid team and capable of scoring the odd goal away from home. But they are still favourites.”
Are Atletico really as ‘exceptional’ as Megson would have us believe? While they’re fourth in the Spanish League, Bolton demonstrated when drawing 2-2 at Bayern Munich that they should fear nobody in this competition, especially with Sergio Aguero suspended after spitting towards the referee on Thursday night. Can the Wanderers continue their European adventure?
