The Premier League’s 39th step

by Alex on June 14th, 2008 1 comment

For years we have been warned about climate change and its risks, but ordinary Joe public has shunned the doom merchants and put football ahead of everything else. Traveling the length and breadth of England to follow your team through its relegation wrangle or championship charge has become a way of life for many. Whether standing in the Stretford End or watching Wycombe on television, football is the world’s lingua franca. [Read the rest of this entry »]

FA firmly against Premier League plans

by sub on February 22nd, 2008 no comments

The English Fa had a Board meeting on Thursday to discuss the Premier League’s proposal to play an extra 39th fixture in international venues and came up with a decision that was being expected of them.

The FA has declared that it is against any such plans by the Premier League and want no disruptions to the current format of the Premiership. A statement by the Fa chairman Lord Triesman reads as follows:

At the moment, we have not seen a sustainable plan to which we can agree. If the Premier League has things it wants to say about changes or new variants, well then they will come forward. But personally, I would prefer it happened sooner rather than later because I don’t want this to drift on particularly as we are about to launch our World Cup bid (for 2018). In general I think uncertainty is not very helpful if it goes on for any length of time but that is a matter for them.

Sorry Mr. Richard Scudamore but maybe it is time that you accede defeat and stop ranting about your tall plans. Everyone disagrees with you and it is good for all that the plan is nipped in the bud.

English FA to hold meeting on Premier League proposals

by sub on February 21st, 2008 1 comment

The English Fa is set to hold a meeting later in Thursday in order to discuss more on the Premier League’s plans on the 39th game. The Premier League proposes that from the 2010-2011 season, an extra fixture be played by all the Premiership clubs in international venues.

But there has been more opposition than support for the plans and the FA too is backing the opposition alliance that included FIFA president Sepp Blatter and UEFA chief Michel Platini. FA chairman Lord Triesman has underlined the four major points on which the entire mater rests. He observes:

Firstly, whatever is proposed must not damage the domestic competitions or prospects of the national team.

Fixture congestion is a real issue and I have not seen solutions to this yet.

Secondly, I am quite clear that the relationships with international bodies have to be sustained, not just because of England’s bid for the 2018 World Cup, although that is very significant for us and it would be foolish of anyone to pretend that it is not.

Thirdly, there has to be a real sense of comfort among the whole football Family, fans included, that it is a viable and credible proposal.

Fourthly, people should feel that whatever happens does not induce the kind of unfairness that may mean that their side, which is perhaps fighting relegation, has a third game against a side which would probably do them some damage in the average encounter.

In all probabilities, the meeting wouldn’t favour the Premier League proposals and the Premier League may just have to whisker off their ambitious project. Not that there would be much complaint should the plans get nipped in the bud.

English FA joins the opposition party alliance

by sub on February 16th, 2008 no comments

The English Fa have now decided to intervene into the Premier League-international venues circus and that is not going to help the Premier League’s ambition to make the top flight clubs in England play Premiership matches abroad. While most of the top football figures including FIFA president Sepp Blatter and UEFA head Michel Platini have rubbished the idea of this 39th fixture, the Football Association too is towing the line.

A statement released by the Fa reads as:

The Football Association has listened carefully to the comments made by FIFA president Sepp Blatter regarding the Premier League’s proposal for an international round of fixtures.

This proposal has generated a high level of debate both domestically and with the international football family.

While the Football Association has given full consideration to views expressed by all parties, we must make our own position on this subject clear.

We can confirm that the Football Association did speak to Fifa general secretary Jerome Valcke about this matter yesterday.

We explained that while we had received a verbal summary on the subject, at this time we are not in possession of any detailed proposals from the Premier League to pass on to Fifa.

It was also made clear to Fifa that the Football Association has some serious reservations about the proposal.

We have the responsibility to the whole of English football and we have to consider any wider consequences and implications that this proposal may create.

On Friday, Blatter said that the proposal could prove detrimental to England’s bid to host the 2018 World Cup and the FA certainly do not want to jeopardize that particular chance.

FIFA to discuss Premier League proposal

by sub on February 9th, 2008 no comments

The news of the English Premier League’s plans to hold some of their matches in foreign territories have reached the FIFA headquarters, or be it through media reports. And FIFA president Sepp Blatter is ready to take action.

No, you need not worry. He is not actually threatening to dash this innovative Premiership plans but says that he will look into the matter after the request is presented officially to him.

Blatter says:

FIFA has been made aware through media reports of these plans. We will expect official documents from the Premier League to be sent to us and the matter will be brought to the attention of the executive at our next meeting, who will then look at the matter.

All the 20 Premiership clubs have unanimously agreed to play one weekend’s matches of the Premier League season in various major cities of the world. This will mean an extra match for each team in one season, a match that is proposed to take place in the month of January. But as football rules have it, the move will only be sanctioned should FIFA approve it and should the football association of the country in which the games will have to be played agrees to it.
