The 2003/04 season will be remembered by Arsenal fans with great affection.

Not only was it the last time the Gunners won the Premier League but they managed it by going the whole season unbeaten.

The run lasted 49 games and started following a loss to Leeds United in May 2003 and was ended by Manchester United at Old Trafford 15 months later.

Gael Clichy’s sale to Manchester City in a £7million deal signals the end of that squad’s time at Arsenal.

The Frenchman played a part in that season and became the youngest player ever to win the title.

But whatever happened to the rest of that record breaking team? Caughtoffside takes a look.

Jens Lehmann

He started every match of the campaign in his first year at the club following his move from Borussia Dortmund. Left for Stuttgart in 2008 but, after retiring last summer, made a brief return to the Gunners squad last season to aid their goalkeeping injury crisis and put in a characteristically mad performance in April’s 3-1 win at Blackpool.

Goalkeeper: David Seaman

‘Safe-hands’ is a legend pure and simple. He was the Gunner’s number one for 13 years and won 75 England caps. Wenger has never been able to replace him (neither has England) and that says it all. He won three league titles, four FA Cups, a League Cup and the Cup Winners Cup.

Left-back: Ashley Cole

Possibly the most hated player amongst Arsenal fans after his move to Chelsea but the Gunners did produce the best left-back in the world. He is the most capped England full-back ever and won two league titles and three FA Cups in North London. If he stayed at Arsenal, he would get the recognition his ability deserves.

Right-back: Lee Dixon

Not just the best MOTD pundit (along with Martin Keown) but also one of the best right-backs in Arsenal’s history. Was part of the famous defensive team inherited by Wenger but was pure class. A crime he did not win more England caps then 22 but won four league titles, three FA Cups, a League Cup and a Cup Winners Cup.

Centre-back: Tony Adams

‘Mr Arsenal’ was effectively just that. Made captain at 21, he would stay as such for another 14 years, until his retirement in 2002. The linchpin of the famous Arsenal defence, and won four league titles, three FA Cups, two League Cups and Cup Winners Cup. Unforgettable and irreplaceable.

Centre-back: Sol Campbell

The Tottenham hero who became an Arsenal legend. Was the rock of the famous invincible team of 2004 and scored in the Champions League final defeat to Barcelona. Replaced Adams as the leader of the defence, winning two Premier Leagues and three FA Cups.

Left-wing: Robert Pires

The enigmatic Frenchman dazzled fans with his silky skills and cool finishes. He also liked a bit of facial hair too. Was a star performer in 2002, when Arsenal won the league and in the Invincible team of 2004. Maybe never quite recovered from his cruciate ligament operation but was a class act.

Right-wing: Freddie Ljungberg

Scoring on your debut against Manchester United is a sure way to become a fan favourite, and that is what he did. He then died his hair red, spawning the chant: “We love you Freddie, because you’ve got red hair, we love you Freddie because you’re everywhere, we love you Freddie, you’re Arsenal through and through”. Great footballer too.

Centre-midfield: Cesc Fabregas

The boy from Barcelona who replaced the great Vieira. Sublime passing, Catalan-esque pressing, unrivalled vision, determined passion, born winner are only a few of his many attributes. World Cup and European Championship winner before he is 23. Technically one of the greatest Arsenal players ever.

Centre-midfield: Patrick Vieira

The first signing, and possibly the best, of Wenger’s era at £3.5m. Height, stamina and physical strength mixed with his composure and passing quality cemented him in Wenger’s stylish attacking side. Legendary fights with Roy Keane and his final touch in an Arsenal shirt was to win the FA Cup. Captain Invincible!

Striker: Thierry Henry

The Frenchman was the captain, the talisman, the dead-ball expert, the penalty-taker and the assist-maker. He scored a club record 226 in just 370 games. And what a portfolio Henry built up during his eight years as Arsenal. Thumping drives, delicate chips, jinking runs, audacious backheels, even the odd header. Pure class.

Striker: Dennis Bergkamp

Not just one of Arsenal’s greatest players but perhaps the best ever seen in the Premier League. The only player to have the top three goals of the month on MOTD for his Leicester hat-trick. Scored and created in equal measure for whoever played with him. The Dutch master.

Ok so the funniest pundit at Sky Sports only played a season under Wenger but the man is a Gunners legend. He battled his demons off the pitch and played like one on it. He was a key figure in the George Graham days and in total played 423 games scoring 99 times.

Ray Parlour -

Another player who was a Gunner before Wenger arrived but blossomed under the Frenchman’s tutorial. He played a key role in the double winning team of ’98 (man of the match in the FA Cup final) and in 2002. No one will forget his stunning 30-yard strike in the FA Cup win over Chelsea. True hero.

Freddie Ljungberg -

His mazy dribbles and frighteningly fast acceleration has come to the fore this season earning him calls for player of the season. has scored many memorable goals too – double against Manchestwr United and his dribble against FC Porto.

Theo Walcott -

Signed as a 17-year-old and had to grow and learn under enormous pressure. Maybe it is a little early for him to be on this list but he has shown what he is capable of. The run in the Champions League quarter-final aginst Liverpool to set up Adebayor was breathtaking. Already a Gunners hero, a legend in-waiting.

Freddie Ljungberg has passed a medical at Celtic and is set to finalise his switch to the Parkhead outfit.

The 33-year-old former Sweden midfielder has been training with the Hoops this week following his departure from MLS outfit Chicago Fire.

Ljungberg has impressed manager Neil Lennon during his time with the club and talks have been ongoing regarding a deal.

The ex-Arsenal ace has now completed an examination and is expected to pen terms with the Glasgow side ahead of their weekend Old Firm clash with Rangers. (Sky Sports)

Neil Lennon will be pleased to have secured a player with vast experience and seemingly enough in the tank for one last hurrah. The Swedish international has been playing regularly in the MLS and should be able to make an impact in the SPL and could well give Celtic an extra edge in their pursuit of arch rivals Rangers.

The Parkhead boss will now reportedly turn his attentions to Aston Villa pair Stephen Ireland and Richard Dunne, two players who probably do not have much hope of becoming models of any kind.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon has confirmed that former Arsenal and Sweden midfielder Freddie Ljungberg will undergo a trial this week.
Ljungberg, who has spent the last 18 months playing in the USA with Seattle Sounders and Chicago Fire arrives in Glasgow on Sunday night.
“He’s coming in and he’ll have a look at us,” said Lennon. “We think he’s got great calibre.
“He’s been a world-class player for a long time.”
Ljungberg left West Ham in 2008 after an agreement was reached to terminate his contract.

The Swede, 33, had considered retiring from football before agreeing a lucrative deal with Major League Soccer side Seattle Sounders that ended with a switch to Chicago Fire in July.

Whilst clearly a move for the 33 year old Swede is not exactly a signing for the long term a deal to bring the former Arsenal and West Ham man to Parkhead may be something of a master-stroke. The right sided midfielder will be keen to prove he still has something to offer on his return to Europe and if he arrives on a short term deal he may well also be looking to impress his way to a long term deal or indeed to make himself available to other interested parties.

The vastly experienced Ljungberg will probably demand a pretty hefty salary but given that there will be no money needed to land the attacking midfielder then the Glasgow side should be able to afford to bring him to the club as they look to put the pressure on SPL leaders and arch rivals Rangers.

Arsenal have refused to comment on speculation connecting Freddie Ljungberg with a return to the club.

Reports have suggested that the Swedish midfielder could join the Gunners on loan from Seattle Sounders in the winter transfer window.

Ljungberg will be looking to maintain his fitness during the Major League Soccer off-season and is thought to be keen to push through a deal.

Arsene Wenger may be willing to let the 32-year-old train with the rest of his squad and is expected to hold talks with his former player.

An Arsenal spokesman told Fotbollskanalen: “We don’t comment on speculation.

“When and if a deal will happen is something we would confirm when it happens.

Ljungberg’s agent Claes Elefalk says his client has travelled to England, adding: “All I can say is that Fredrik is in London.” (Sky Sports)

There is no doubting the impact and success the Swede had at the club during his nine year spell at the club which came to an end two years ago and is now playing his football at Seattle Sounders where he has done very well but surely it’s unlikely Arsene would consider bringing the attacking midfielder back to the club?

The idea that Freddie may come back to stay fit by training with the club holds water as David Beckham did likewise but not sure that the Gunners boss would turn to a 32 year old who has been plying his trade in the relatively low standard football of the MLS as a stop gap solution. Such a move would probably have a negative impact on those who may be ignored for the player should he indeed return.

Better to remember Ljungberg for the 300+ plus appearances he managed for the club rather than considering this deal.

Or to put it nicely, West Ham announced on Wednesday that they have released midfielder Freddie Ljungberg after an agreement was reached to terminate his contract.

Who is the country’s best player?

Ljungberg, who captained Sweden at Euro 2008, moved to West Ham last July 2007 for approx £3m.

“This is mutually acceptable,” said West Ham chief executive Scott Duxbury.

Ljungberg started 22 of West Ham’s 38 Premier League matches last season, but was kept out of the side after suffering a number of injuries.

The club website stresses that:

“The decision to part company has been taken jointly and has no bearing on Ljungberg’s fitness, which he proved during Euro 2008.”

“We respect Freddie Ljungberg’s position and are pleased we could reach agreement and wish him all the best in the future,” added Duxbury.

Ljungberg will now work on his etchings consider his football future.
