Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas has been told by owner Roman Abramovich to play his youngsters in tonight’s Carling Cup tie against Fulham.

The Blues boss revealed the Russian billionaire wants the new philosophy to help develop the best of the up and coming talent.

Josh McEachran, Romelu Lukaku, Ryan Bertrand and Oriol Romeu will all get their chance to impress against the Cottagers, instead of established first teamers.

AVB is glad to oblige his employer as he hopes Abramovich will now be more patient and wants to build a lasting legacy.

“It’s a club philosophy,” Villas-Boas said. “A decision the owner wants, to promote talent.

But there is a responsibility to try and win trophy as well. I think there is prestige in the competition.

“Arsenal have been doing it for years. We can discuss if it has been useful or not for the talent.

“But I think it has been, they (Arsenal) reached the final last year and a couple of semis. Important to get feeling of competition for them.

“The Carling Cup is an opportunity for us to put our best young talents across and give them experience for us. It’s not a completely new approach as we did it last year.

“We want them to have these opportunities. It’s a good challenge, as Fulham are a Premier League team, and it gives us an idea of where we stand.”

Manchester City have spent nearly £400million in three years but manager Roberto Mancini still wants more more players to add to his squad.

The Blues blew the chance to open a top-flight campaign with five straight victories when Fulham came from 2-0 down to draw yesterday’s clash at Craven Cottage.

The result, coming four days after they made their Champions League bow, cast doubt on their ability to cope with the demands of domestic and European football.

Mancini bemoaned his inability to rest the likes of Yaya Toure and Gareth Barry with James Milner and Nigel De Jong currently sidelined through injury.

Asked if that meant he did not have enough players, he said: “We are lacking at this moment because we lost two midfielders.

“I don’t have players at the moment. I can only change the full-backs.

“I have only two midfielders, because James and De Jong have injuries.”

Mancini also admits his players lacked the mentality of champions after watching them waste numerous chances to kill off opponents for the third time in eight days.

“What team comes here against Fulham in London and has over 70% of ball possession?” he added.

“We had the same problem against Wigan at home. We had 15 chances in the first half and we scored only one goal.

“It doesn’t always go well if you don’t score, if you don’t close the game.”

Mancini was unhappy with the way his star-studded attackers defended, too, accusing them of shirking their responsibilities.

“For 10 minutes, we defended with five or six players,” he said. “It is not good enough. I’m not angry. I’m just disappointed because we conceded two stupid goals.”

Former AC Milan and Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti will take a one-year sabbatical from the game to recharge his batteries and learn from his colleagues.

The 51-year-old was sacked by the Blues on the last day of a disappointing season despite finishing second and winning the Premier League and FA Cup double in his first campaign.

The Italian has been linked with a number of job vacancies, notably Aston Villa, Roma and Fulham but reveals he has not been contacted by any of them.

Ancelotti says he will manage Roma, where he enjoyed a successful playing career between 1979 and 1987, one day but not yet.

“I am in no hurry to coach and I don’t need to,” he told La Stampa.

“I have not been contacted by any club in England and I have not spoken to Roma. It is all fantasy.

“I have always said and I reiterate it that one day I will coach Roma, but it’s still early.

“I have enjoyed this experience (of coaching in England). I will return to London to organise my life.

“Besides a six-month break, I have been coaching non-stop since 1995. I will take a year off and look around, study how my colleagues work.”

West Bromwich Albion have begun negotiations about bringing out of contract Fulham midfielder Zoltan Gera back to the Hawthorns.

Baggies manager Roy Hodgson signed the 32-year-old for the Cottagers when he was in charge there in 2008.

He wants to be reunited with the Hungary international and believes the fans will welcome him back to the Midlands according to the Independent.

Gera made 155 appearances in his four-year spell at the Hawthorns after a £1.5million move from Ferencvaros in 2004.

He was sent off in his last appearance for Fulham against Arsenal after scoring only one goal in 27 appearances last season.

Hodgson has already signed Ipswich centre-back Gareth McAuley and Preston full-back Billy Jones since the end of the season.

He is also still interested in Blackpool midfielder David Vaughan but may lose out in the race to sign Watford striker Danny Graham, who has also been targeted by Swansea and Cardiff City.

Fulham striker Bobby Zamora and Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand have both been named in the England squad for the Euro 2012 qualifier against Switzerland.

Zamora has won a recall following his return to form after a broken leg ruled him out for most of the season.

Waynbe Rooney’s suspension for the June 4 clash at Wembley has given him hope he could play some part in the crucial qualifier.

Ferdinand has been recalled for the first time since he was controversially stripped of the captaincy by manager Fabio Capello because of injury.

Capello handed back the captaincy to John Terry who Ferdinand will hope to partner in central defence.

With Ben Foster having announced he is taking a break from international football and doubts over Rob Green’s intentions, Scott Carson and David Stockdale will provide back-up to No.1 Joe Hart.

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick is recalled to the party, while Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere is also included having been left out of Stuart Pearce’s U21 squad.

Of the squad Capello selected for the Wales game, Aaron Lennon and Matt Jarvis miss out, while Arsenal’s Theo Walcott is recalled.
