Celtic player claims ‘Old Firm’ is the biggest club match in the world: Do you agree?

by offsidetrap on February 12th, 2009 11 comments

It’s not every day that a player makes a claim that Scotland is better than Spain. But this is one of those times. Celtic midfielder Marc Crosas, who played for Barcelona in ‘El Clasico’ against Real Madrid, is making the claim that while Barca and Madrid is a big derby, the Old Firm is bigger. Rangers lining up £2.5 million bid for Cardiff defender – will Bluebirds demand more?

by stresster on August 13th, 2008 8 comments

It’s clear that when an Old Firm side lose arguably their best defender, they will hunt down a replacement fairly immediately. This appears to be the case after Rangers were left with no alternative but to sell Carlos Cuellar to Aston Villa for £7.8 million, with Walter Smith identifying a certain Championship defender as his replacement. Mike Tyson offers support to Newcastle, Tottenham and England legend!

by stresster on April 14th, 2008 8 comments

Can a leopard really change its spots? That appears to be the case with ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson, who claims to have helped out Wayne Rooney a few years ago and would be happy to do the same with ‘troubled star’ Paul Gascoigne. The latter recently suffered a mental breakdown, culminating in a two-week session with psychiatrists, and the Brooklyn Brawler knows what its like to hit rock bottom himself after being convicted for rape and also jailed for driving under the influence of drugs. RTE reports that he’s coming to the United Kingdom and would be happy to speak with Gazza.

Tyson, 41, said: ‘I know all about Gazza and I feel I can help him.

‘A lot of top sportsmen have suffered in their private lives, including me, and that is why I want to help.

‘I still see him as a superstar and would like to meet him if he feels up for it.’

Tyson said: ‘Back in 2005, Wayne Rooney was on a downer and I met him and lifted his spirits. I am sure I can do the same for Paul Gascoigne.’

There’s apparently no truth in the rumour that Amy Winehouse has sought counselling from the former heavyweight champion of the world. However, this is clearly a man who has ‘been there and bought the t-shirt’ and it will be nice for Gascoigne to hear his words of encouragement and support after recently going off the rails.

Hutton: I was right to join Tottenham

by stresster on February 3rd, 2008 12 comments

The Scottish Sunday Mail report that Alan Hutton is delighted to have finally joined Tottenham, despite stalling over a move to White Hart Lane for several weeks. The full-back impressed on his Spurs debut against Manchester United yesterday and is looking forward to life under Juande Ramos.

Hutts said: “I had some doubts about leaving Rangers but being involved in a game like this makes me realise I’ve made the right decision.

“I’m sure I’ve made a great choice coming to a massive club like this.

“It’s what every boy in Scotland dreams about. It was a big step for me but I’m glad I’ve taken it. The Tottenham fans were fantastic.

“From the first minute they reacted brilliantly towards me.

“People might think there’s pressure on me because of the big fee but I didn’t feel it. I believe in myself.

“I went out there and did what I’ve always done – that’s why Spurs bought me. Hopefully I can do the same job for them as I did for Rangers.”

With the addition of Woodgate and Hutton in defence, Tottenham look a totally different prospect under Juande Ramos. It will be a strange sight to see Spurs defending stoutly and keeping the likes of Manchester United at bay for the whole match. Let’s just hope Hutton doesn’t start getting homesick!

Champions League Matchday Five Claims Last Of The Unbeaten

by soccersource on December 1st, 2007 no comments

With Arsenal and FC Porto losing their Champions League games this week, there are now no unbeaten teams left among those still alive in European (UEFA Cup or CL) competitions. Three teams (Chelsea, Man U, Barca) are unbeaten in champions league competition and several others have not lost in their domestic leagues (Arse, Liverpool, Porto, Benfica, Ajax, to name a few) but as far as I can tell everybody Soccer Source tracks for its Weekly Top 25 (which is supposed to be every club in the world).

There are several unbeaten teams from non “Big Four” leagues that do not play in Europe: Beitar Jerusalem, Wisla Krakow, Romania’s CFR Cluj, Partizan Belgrade and CSKA Sofia, who shouldn’t really count because they lost their UEFA Cup series to Toulouse on away goals, while not losing either game. Actually, Partizan Belgrade was forced to forfeit their UEFA Cup games with Mostar, which technically counts as a loss but I’m including them here because, well I’m a nice guy.

There are also teams from minnow leagues that are unbeaten: Olimpik Baku in Azerbaijan’s Yuksak Liga, Georgia’s FC Zestafoni and Moldova’s Sheriff Tiraspol, to name a few. I think there might also be teams in Andorra, Cyprus, Luxembourg and San Marino but I’m not going to go there (I’ll be the first to admit I have no life, but seriously, I need to establish limits somewhere).

Chelsea and AC Milan were the only teams to clinch advancement to the Round of 16 in Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League games. There were some other noteworthy results:

  • Real Madrid was upset by Werder Bremen. The Spanish side could have sealed their own passage with a mere point, while Bremen was facing a “must win.”
  • Speaking of “must wins,” Liverpool fulfilled that duty; their defeat of FC Porto was the Portuguese side’s first loss of the season in all competitions. Liverpool still need to win their final game at Marseille though. Failure to do so could even result in an ouster from all European competition as the Merseysiders would finish dead last in the group if Beskitas also win at Porto.
  • Olympiakos continued their impressive form and only need to tie Bremen at home in the final matchday, Dec. 11, to advance.
  • Freddy F.C., a.k.a. Benfica Lisbon, will not be advancing to the Round of 16 after only managing a 1-1 tie at home to AC Milan. They will play for a spot in the UEFA Cup in the final matchday when they face Shakhtar Donetsk. Should Benfica win, they also seal Celtic’s advancement. (The Glasgow side will only fail to advance if they lose to AC Milan at San Siro and Donetsk beats Benfica.)
  • Valencia, which managed only a scoreless draw at home to Schalke yesterday, will not advance either.
  • Despite losing by four goals to Chelsea at home, Rosenborg are very much in the driver’s seat, needing only one point from their final match day game at Schalke.

As for Milan and Chelsea, they join Inter Milan, AS Roma, Barcelona, Manchester United, Arsenal and Sevilla who had already advanced. So with the final matchday upon us, half of the 16 teams are known. All are big, filthy-rich clubs that were favored to advance at the outset, but the final matchday could add some “Cinderellas” (to borrow a U.S. sportscaster phrase): Besiktas, Fenerbahce, Rosenborg and Olympiakos certainly fit into that category, especially if they advance at the expense of Liverpool and Lazio and Valencia or Schalke. So there is still plenty to play for.
