Liverpool defender Glen Johnson wants to return from his hamstring injury against Manchester United next weekend.

The 27-year-old picked up the problem in pre-season against Valencia and then aggravated the knock when appearing as a substitute at Stoke on September 10.

The England international has not featured since, but now has his sights set on United’s visit to Anfield on October 15.

“I’m feeling good at the moment and I’ve been doing plenty of running,” Johnson told the club’s website.

“I’ve just started doing ball work outside in training so I reckon it won’t be too long now.

“I’m working hard and it would be nice to be back in the squad for the Man United game. Hopefully I can make the bench anyway, so fingers crossed.”

Meanwhile assistant coach Steve Clarke insists now is the time for captain Steven Gerrard to step up his fitness work after recovering from a groin strain.

“For Steven it’s just a progression. He’s coming back from a long-term injury and we’ll try to treat him as cautiously and carefully as we can,” Clarke said.

“Obviously there will be a time when he is going to have to push on – and I think this is the time now.

“We’ve only got a very small group of players left behind because we’ve got a lot of players away on international duty.

“There were only six players training on Wednesday, but we managed to get a lot of good work into them with such a small number.

“On Thursday we’ll bring up the reserve-team squad to join in, which will give us more numbers.

“With Steven it has been well documented that we’re looking after him.

“He’s going to have to push himself in the coming weeks – and the more minutes we get into him, the better.”

Liverpool will not rush captain Steven Gerrard back from injury with the club insisting they will take a common sense approach.

The 31-year-old injured his groin six months ago and underwent before suffering an infection in his  rehabilitation during pre-season.

The England international is unlikely to face Tottenham at White Hart Lane on Sunday but could make his first appearance in the Carling Cup tie at Brighton on Wednesday.

His presence has not been missed as much as it would have been in previous campaigns, mainly thanks to a significant summer recruitment drive.

And manager Kenny Dalglish knows there is no point in bringing him back before he is fully ready with the risk of problems recurring further down the line.

“Steven is progressing very well, Martin Kelly is back training and Fabio (Aurelio) is close to coming back to joining us also,” Dalglish said.

“We will pick and choose when it is best suited for Steven, whichever games suits him best.

“We will analyse his recovery and how the progress is; we will do the same for Martin Kelly as we will do for Steven.

“We will just see what is right for Steven. There is no rush from us or from him because it has to be common sense.

“Everyone who is asked to play will be fit enough to play.”

Dalglish’s only real injury concern is defender Glen Johnson, who made his first appearance of the season as a substitute in the 1-0 defeat at Stoke on Saturday.

But the 27-year-old suffered a recurrence of a hamstring problem which he sustained in the Reds’ final friendly at home to Valencia over a month ago.

Suggestions are the England defender could be out for another four weeks but Dalglish said they are waiting for medical reports to determine the extent of the injury.

“We’ve only got Glen Johnson (injured) really. We are just waiting for some tests to come back and wait for the results,” he added.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Kyle Walker plans to take Europe by storm with his club this season and next summer in an England shirt.

The 21-year-old caught the eye last season following a successful loan spell at Aston Villa and a superb performance against Spain in the U21 European Championships.

His performance in that game led him to being labelled the ’new Roberto Carlos’ by sections of the foreign media.

While the England U21 international is quick to play down the comparisons, he wants to establish himself for club and country this season.

Walker has just signed a new five-year deal at Spurs and is looking forward to playing in the Europa League for the north Londoners.

He is aware a good season with his club could mean a spot on the plane for Euro 2012 tournament next summer.

But first he wants to make his senior national debut and with Glen Johnson missing through injury, his chance could be on Wednesday at Wembley against Holland.

“It’s been a whirlwind two years,” Walker said. ”There have been a lot of big steps in my career.

“The summer has been all football but it’s all been good. The Tottenham contract, I’m happy for, and hopefully I can get into the team now and push forward there.

“There are a lot of quality players at Tottenham and it is going to be difficult.

“But it is massively important for me to be playing week in and week out. I’ve had a taste of it at Villa, playing week-in and week-out at Premier League level.

“I’d like to think I’ve proved I can play Premier League football and hopefully the gaffer (Harry Redknapp) puts some trust in me and plays me.

“I feel at Spurs I need to get a couple of games and show the gaffer what I can do and also the fans who have seen very little of me.

“It should be a special occasion in anyone’s career to play for your country,” he added.

“Who wouldn’t be excited? It’s what I dreamed off since I started playing football, to play for England, and hopefully it comes.

“Playing for your country is massive at any level and to go to Euro 2012 would be something special.

“It would be a special moment in my career – and I want to play.

“But I’ve got to take small steps rather than looking for a year’s progress, I want to take small steps and see what happens.

“I’m just turned 21 and I’m willing to learn, and hopefully I can learn off the likes of John Terry, Rio Ferdinand, and take a leaf out of their book.”

“The U21 tournament is a good level, it was a good experience for me, getting away with England and hopefully preparing myself for future tournaments to come.

“It did help me. I did well although the tournament for the team was not what we expected. It was on TV and hopefully I did the right things.”

“I’m a defender. My main objective is to defend. Going forward is just a bonus of my game and I just want to learn off defenders really.

“But I started off as a centre-forward and that has probably helped me out a lot.

“I like to go forward, I like to attack, and wingers don’t want to track you back these days.”

Liverpool Fc are very close to making their next big signing with Aly Cissokho likely to be named as their new left-back next Monday.
Liverpool still require a new defender in that area and had considered Newcastle United’s Jose Enrique however the Spaniard would prefer to join a side competing in this seasons Champions League competition. Arsenal were linked with Cissokho but Wenger confirmed that the left side of their defence was covered, leaving the route free for Dalglish to make his move for the strong 23 year old.
Figures of £10m have been quoted although his current club Lyon are looking to sell for at least £12m, having paid Porto €15m in 2009. There will be concerns on his medical however, with AC Milan pulling out at the last minute in 2009 after discovering could suffer from spinal injuries later on in his career.
Should a medical go through without any issues, Liverpool’s defence will look complete with just another striker expected to join the squad this summer.

Having already snapped up Jordan Henderson, Charlie Adam, Stewart Downing and Doni you would have to say that Kenny Dalglish has already been a very busy man, looking to improve his Anfield squad in the hope of breaking back into the top four club and a move to bring in a first choice left back would appear to be uppermost in the Scot’s remaining transfer plans.

Liverpool did apparently express a very real interest in Arsenal’s Gael Clichy before he made his move to Man City and Newcastle United’s want-away full back Jose Enrique is reportedly a long term target who appears to have reached a stalemate with the Magpies over any new contract talks so a move for Lyon’s Aly Cissokho appears to be the most realistic capture and this source believes a deal is very much in the pipeline.

Last season Liverpool used Paul Konchesky, Fabio Aurelio, Jack Robinson, Glen Johnson and Danny Wilson to fill what has now become something of a problem area and French international Cissokho may well be the solution. The 23 year old former Porto man is an attack minded left back who came very close to securing a move to AC Milan two years ago but ended up at the Stade Gerland where he has been a consistent performer.

Liverpool have now spent over £100m on new players this year, with Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll signed in January to go with this summer’s four additions, which means that Dalglish may have to step up in his selling of squad players to help make room and balance the books.

Paul Konchesky has left and Milan Jovanovic is set to move to Anderlecht, however neither of these would attract much in the way of a fee. Christian Poulsen and Joe Cole may be next out the door but Dalglish may have to reassess his opinion of Italian international Alberto Aquilani following some very impressive displays in pre-season matches thus far.

Liverpool defender Glen Johnson has agreed a contract extension to remain at the club for ‘the long-term’.

The 26-year-old joined from Portsmouth in 2009 and has two years left on his current deal but the new contract should keep him at the club into his 30s.

The England international endured a difficult start due to injuries and lost his place to teenager Martin Kelly.

He re-emerged at left-back and contributed to helping resurrect Liverpool’s season.

Johnson has made 70 appearances for the Reds but director of football Damien Comolli believes he has not yet reached his prime and is excited to see him fulfil his potential at Anfield.

“We are absolutely delighted,” Comolli told the club’s website.

“We were in talks for a few weeks but it was easy to find an agreement because he wanted to stay and we wanted him to stay.

“We are very pleased he wants to commit long term and I think he was pleased we went to him and asked him to commit long term.

“We are happy his long-term future is at Liverpool.

“His best years are to come,” he added. “Very often defenders peak between 26 and 31, so he is just entering into those years where a maturity comes in and his knowledge of the game gets better and better.

“It’s obvious when you watch him play his technical ability is second to none.

“Physically he is absolutely fantastic as well and his fitness level is great.

“Towards the end of last season he showed how versatile he is by playing at left-back or right-back – mostly at left-back – and was outstanding.

“For us he is a great asset to have around. As we’ve always said, we don’t want to sell our best players or sell our assets and as long as the players are happy to be here, we’re happy to commit to them.”

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish has vowed that this summer will be ‘very important’ for the Reds, as he looks to stamp his mark on the team he inherited in January from former boss Roy Hodgson. Reports suggest as many as 7 Liverpool players could be on their way out of Anfield with the likes of Joe Cole, Milan Jovanovic and Christian Poulsen all struggling to make an impact since their arrival last summer.

The Anfield outfit have endured one of their most turbulent seasons in recent years having been plagued with injuries throughout the campaign. A change of ownership and management has also contributed to their poor show of form on the pitch. Captain Steven Gerrard is set to miss the final run-in of the season with a recurring groin injury, missing the potentially crucial clash with Tottenham on 15th May.

Fellow teammates Daniel Agger, Glen Johnson and Martin Kelly are also on the long-term injury list, with Fabio Aurelio, Jamie Carragher and Andy Carroll all struggling for fitness after picking up knocks against Arsenal in the thrilling 1-1 draw at the Emirates.

Regardless of where the Reds finish this season, Kenny Dalglish is anticipating an exciting summer in the Anfield camp as he looks to do some much-needed business to add strength and depth to his squad. New owners John Henry and Tom Werner have already signalled their intent with the acquisitions of £35m Andy Carroll and £22m Luis Suarez in January.

Speaking to the clubs official website, Dalglish said: “Every football club after May knows where they stand. You know what you need and there’s always going to be business done. If you do good business, you’ve more chance of being successful.

Dalglish has already called upon promising 22-year-old Jay Spearing a number of times since his appointment, with the Wirral-born midfielder impressing with his dominant displays. Youngster John Flanagan has also impressed the Scot, making his debut in the 3-0 home victory over Manchester City and putting in an assured display against Arsenal last weekend. 17-year-old Jack Robinson was also fielded against a strong Arsenal side after an injury to Fabio Aurelio forced Dalglish to make a change.

“If we’re convinced we have young players who are maybe better than what’s available, then we’ll keep our younger players. But that’s not to say we don’t want to improve as a football club in any way.”

Liverpool are facing another defensive crisis as Daniel Agger will not play again this season because of a knee injury the club confirmed today.

Full-backs Glen Johnson and Martin Kelly will also be out for up to four weeks meaning they will only be back for the last two games.

The news is a massive blow for manager Kenny Dalglish who is already waiting the results of the scans for captain Steven Gerrard.

The 30-year-old was due to play against West Brom last Saturday but suffered a recurrence of the groin injury that required surgery a month ago.

But it is not all bad news for Dalglish as Fabio Aurelio, Jonjo Shelvey and David Ngog are back in training.

“Daniel has a problem with the tendon behind his knee and won’t be involved again this season,” Dalglish told the club’s website.

“He’ll be out for a couple of months before he can start training.

“Glen Johnson has a hamstring problem which is usually about three or four weeks and it’s the same for Martin Kelly.

“We will know about Steven at the end of the week. He will be assessed and we’ll see what the story is.

“It’s disappointing for the players because they want to play in every game. We’re getting towards the end of the season but if you’re injured you’re injured.

“We feel for them but the most important people at the football club are the ones who are fit and able to play. We have to get on with what we’ve got.

“Fabio Aurelio and Jonjo Shelvey are training again and David Ngog had a game for the reserves on Monday. So we’ve lost some but we’ve got a few back.”

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish is desperate to learn the full extent of captain’s Steven Gerard’s recurrence of his groin injury.

The 30-year-old underwent surgery for the problem in March but was back in training last week ahead of schedule.

The England international hoped to play in the 2-1 defeat at West Bromwich Albion but was injured in training on Friday.

Dalglish is awaiting the scan results and is fearful of losing his skipper for the entire run-in.

“Steven was training (on Friday) and innocuously tried to turn with the ball and felt a sharp pain,” said Dalglish.

“Same injury but not the same thing.

“We’ll get him assessed and by the end of the week we’ll know better about everybody.

“It’s disappointing for Steven because he was training really well and looking forward to being back in among the lads.”

Defenders Glen Johnson and Daniel Agger picked up injuries in the early stages of the West Brom defeat to leave Dalglish bemoaning the loss of three players.

“To lose three players in April would be a blow for anybody,” he added.

England defender Glen Johnson believes Andy Carroll will explode onto the international scene and scare the opposition into defeat.

The most expensive British player in history will lead the line against Wales in the Euro 2012 qualifier on Saturday after making his debut against France last November.

The 22-year-old has started Liverpool’s last two games after injury and his Anfield team-mate knows the six-foot-four striker is more than just a target-man.

“He scares the life out of opposition defences,” Johnson said.

“Everyone sees Andy as a big target man, who can hold the ball up. But there is far more to his game than that.

“He is always an outlet. You can stretch the play by giving it to him and he scores goals. Defenders just do not like the way he plays.

“He has caught me by surprise with his development but in football your life can change very quickly.

“There is no doubt he can make a big impact.”
