£3 million defender leaves Cardiff for Celtic – and has a swipe at former manager

It’s something of a blow to lose your best defender just one match into the season, especially when you’re gunning for a top six finish in the Championship after an FA Cup final appearance last season. However, Dave Jones is going to have to cope without Glenn Loovens, who has now completed his switch from Cardiff to Celtic for £3 million – not a bad bit of business considering the Bluebirds acquired him for £250,000. Rangers lining up £2.5 million bid for Cardiff defender – will Bluebirds demand more?

It’s clear that when an Old Firm side lose arguably their best defender, they will hunt down a replacement fairly immediately. This appears to be the case after Rangers were left with no alternative but to sell Carlos Cuellar to Aston Villa for £7.8 million, with Walter Smith identifying a certain Championship defender as his replacement.
