After losing his way through most of last season, Tottenham Hotspur’s ex-number one is casting his eye elsewhere after the signing of Heurelho Gomes from PSV Eindhoven, with Aston Villa his preferred destination.
Despite them not actually indicating they’d like to sign him, Paul Robinson has made it clear he wants to move to Villa Park to resurrect his career after such a fall down the White Hart Lane pecking order during most of the 2007/08 season.
Martin O’Neill is known to be looking for a keeper after Liverpool’s stubborness over Scott Carson and the release of Thomas Sorensen. Enquiries were made about Celtic’s Polish stopper Artur Boruc, but the Villans halted talks once the Bhoys quoted a £15m asking price, so Robinson appears to be a cheaper alternative.
And if they were to make a move, ‘Robbo’ would jump at the chance. A source close to him said:
Paul would welcome the opportunity to move to a club like Aston Villa.
He believes Martin O’Neill can help to bring the best out of him. He realises his chances of playing regularly at Tottenham look unlikely.
He feels such a move would help to resurrect his career.
Having seen many Aston Villa players receive call-ups to the England squad recently, perhaps Robinson sees Villa Park as the perfect destination to get some playing time and get noticed by Fabio Capello?

Espanyol’s Cameroon international goalkeeper, who has long been linked as a replacement for Tottenham’s blundering England keeper Paul Robinson, has said he is content in La Liga and has no intention of coming to Spain.
Carlos Kameni has been linked with a move to White Hart Lane, and other European destinations, since January but the 24-year-old says he isn’t going anywhere:
I’m very happy at Espanyol and I’m very comfortable there. I hope to return to Barcelona [Espanyol's base] and to have a good pre-season.
I have a contract there until the 30th of June 2009 and, if there are no changes, I will begin to train with my team-mates.
The statement is a blow to Spurs manager Juande Ramos, who is chasing several goalkeeping options due to the loss of Radek Cerny and horrendous form of Paul Robinson. However, it does now open up the door for PSV’s loud-mouthed Brazillian Gomes to make his proposed £10m move as Tottenham’s undisputed number one. However, I don’t expect that to be the only goalkeeper Ramos moves for before August.
