In a weekend that also saw Karl Henry confirm his reputation as something of a dirty player Manchester City midfielder Nigel De Jong has done likewise after a horrific challenge on Hatem Ben Arfa which left the Newcastle United man with a broken leg. Anyone who feels this tackle was fair needs their eyes tested and how the Dutchman failed to even get a booking is beyond me.
You can see the St James’ Park man taken all ends up by a brutal tackle by the Eastlands man who is known for his uncompromising style of play, and by uncompromising I mean disgusting. Of course football is a contact sport but that doesn’t mean you can go right through a player with both feet in the feint hope you will also get the ball as well as both of the player’s legs.
It appears that the on loan Marseille man will be out for the rest of the season or at least a very big portion of it and the challenge by De Jong should be dealt with retroactively as it seems the official today, Martin Atkinson didn’t appear to see it because surely if he had it would have resulted in a red card.

French international Hatem Ben Arfa left Marseille for St James’ Park with a fair bit of acrimony after falling out with boss Didier Deschamps. The 23 year old made it clear he wanted to leave and threatened to go on strike if he was not allowed to move, this was mainly down to the way he felt the club was being run and given the awful start the Ligue 1 champions have had this season, he may well have been on to something.
However today at Goodison Park he left all that behind him as he reminded everyone just what the he is capable of. Receiving the ball on the edge of the Everton box the clever wide man looks for options left and right but can’t seem to spot a run, you can then see his mind whirling into action.
He takes a swift move left and fires a peach of a shot arrowing into the top right corner. And with that it’s almost as though he can now start afresh. Chris Hughton has brought in a stunningly talented player with a point to prove and that combination may be just what the Magpies need to push onwards and upwards on their return to the top tier.
