Boro chase £3.2m American midfielder for his signature: Could Gareth get his man?

by offsidetrap on June 6th, 2008 4 comments

Boro manager Gareth Southgate looks set to beat fellow Premiership clubs Everton and Newcastle for the signature of highly-touted American Michael Bradley after offering Dutch club Heerenveen £3.2m to part with their ace midfielder.

Boro manager Gareth Southgate also looks set to sign USA midfielder Michael Bradley from Dutch side Heerenveen for around £3.2m. (The Daily Telegraph)

To be honest, £3.2m would be a steal for a player that many consider to be one of the top three talents in the American football system. After watching American striker Jozy Altidore bolt from the MLS for Villarreal for £5m this week, Boro would be lucky to grab Bradley’s signature for such a discounted price.

Are Boro supporters excited about the prospects of having Bradley paired with Stewart Downing next season? Or would you rather see the club use the funds on a midfielder with Premiership experience?

5 million midfielder flirts heavily with Everton, but is he good enough?

by Dexter on May 30th, 2008 9 comments

US midfielder Michael Bradley has been batting his eyelids towards Merseyside, hinting heavily that he wouldn’t be opposed to an Everton move. It remains to be seen, however, if Bradley will pass muster as his performance for the US against England didn’t exactly set the world ablaze. Here is a portion of the sickly-sweet come-and-get-me-plea from Bradley:

“I have one-year left on my contract at Heerenveen, so I am looking to move this summer.

“Hopefully something will work out. I know all about Everton. It is a great club and I think anybody would be honoured to go and play there. I know I would.

“We’ll just have to see what happens in the next few weeks.” (Liverpool Daily Post)

Will this be a case of unrequited love, or will Moyesie make a move for Bradley?

Middlesbrough chase highly rated £3m American youngster in the hopes of starting their own Fulhamerica

by offsidetrap on May 27th, 2008 8 comments

With Rumors swirling around that Boro could lose midfield linchpin Stewart Downing this summer, The Daily Star is reporting that the club is ready to pay £3m to bring in highly touted American midfielder, Michael Bradley, to freshen things up.

Middlesbrough will fund a £3m move for Heerenveen’s American midfielder Michael Bradley by selling George Boateng. (Daily Star)

Bradley has been rumored to be leaving the Dutch Eredivisie club for some time now for the EPL. He recently broke the record for the most goals scored in a single season by an American-born footballer playing in a European first division with 17, so he’s no slouch when it comes to up-and-coming talent.

Do Boro fans think he can cut it in the EPL? Or would you rather the club save the funds from Boateng and use them on someone else?

Southgate is all smiles after signing Alves

by sub on February 3rd, 2008 1 comment

Middlesbrough paid Heerenven around £12million to sign Brazilian international striker Alfonso Alves on Thursday just hours before the January transfer shut up and Boro manager Gareth Southgate is visibly delighted with the club record signing.

Sky Sports quotes Southgate as saying:

I think it’s very satisfying when so much effort has been put in, and I’ve got to say the chairman and Keith Lamb have been fantastic. I’ve heard people question the ambition of this club over the last year, and I know we’ve done deals going out to help finance things, but I’ve had terrific backing from them in the transfer market. The ambition is still there. We’ve got a plan. It takes time to build a club up, but that’s what we’re trying to do. This signing will be a real boost and give great momentum to our season. I think it will excite the fans. He’s a player with a fantastic pedigree and people are really looking forward to seeing him play.

So Boro are looking at the long tem prospects. But what exactly is Middlesbrough’s ambition? Surely not to finish in a UEFA Cup spot next season?!

AZ Alkmaar wants Alves ban

by sub on February 3rd, 2008 1 comment

Alfonso Alves might have brought with him loads of quality and a formidable goal scoring track record but the Brazilian international striker has also imported a whole heap of controversies and legal battles. Sky Sports reports that Dutch club AZ Alkmaar is all set to go to football’s world governing body FIFA in order to try and force a ban on Alves for the rest of the season.

Middlesbrough signed the striker from Heerenven on Thursday but AZ claim that they had a pre-contract agreement with the player. Alves has of course denied ever making any such contract but that doesn’t allay the feeling of betrayal and anger that AZ chairman Dirk Scheringa is going through at the moment.

Scheringa says:

He really has a chance of getting banned from playing for the rest of the season. We have a water-tight contract with him.

So hold on you Boro fans, there could yet be more drama and controversy waiting for you in the coming days.

Roma to hijack ‘Boro Alves bid?

by Dexter on January 31st, 2008 2 comments

Football365 reports that Roma are ready to leap ahead of hapless Middlesbrough a whisk Heerenveen striker Afonso Alves from under ‘Boro’s noses. According to reports, Middlesbrough have agreed personal terms with the Brazilian striker but haven’t yet sorted out the small matter of agreeing a fee with Heerenveen(!) Add to this the rancid layer cake of red tape surrounding Alves’ work permit application and the scene is set for a last minute hijack bid by Roma.
Football365 claims that:

“Roma could be ready to throw a spanner in the works of Boro’s potential record deal.

“It now remains to be seen whether Boro can get the deal, which has dragged on for a number of days, done or whether Alves may remain in Holland or head elsewhere.

“Boro fans are desperate to see a big-name capture this month, as the only deal done so far in January has seen Jonathan Woodgate move to Tottenham.”

Can ‘Boro fans really face the heartbreak of missing out on Alves?

Is Samaras heading from Manchester City to Rangers?

by sub on January 29th, 2008 3 comments

Greek international striker Georgios Samaras is looking for a window of opportunity to move from Manchester City to a place where he can play more football. And the Scottish Premier League could provide the answer

Sky Sports reports that the former Heerenveen striker is eager to move out on loan for the rest of the season in order to garner more games with the Euro 2008 finals in mind. Samaras says:

”At this moment I need to find somewhere to play football. I have the European Championship this summer and I need to play games before then. I would be happy to go to Scotland. I would not have any problem with leaving the Premiership – playing football is the main thing for me. I would have the chance of European football with Rangers and that is also very interesting. But it would be a loan. I’m not looking for a full-time move.”

Rangers have been touted as the most likely courtiers of the player and although the January transfer window is fast slamming down, there could yet be some time for the Greek to board a plane for Glasgow and stay there for the rest of the season. Not that City manager Sven-Goran Eriksson would mind losing the player, though.

Middlesbrough closing in on Alfonso Alves…Finally!

by sub on January 27th, 2008 1 comment

Middlesbrough appear to be making some long awaited headway in signing the Brazilian international striker Alfonso Alves from Dutch first division club Heerenveen. Football-Corner Blogspot has reported that the deal will be completed in the next 24 hours but the amount of transfer fee has not been verified.

Boro manager Gareth Southgate told the club’s official website:

We’re still in talks with Heerenveen and we’re hoping that within the next 24 hours we can conclude an agreement with them, and then of course there are things like work permits to get through. I feel the signing of Alves would be a terrific one for Boro. Alves is a quality goal striker that scores bag full of goals. Alves is 26-years old and has scored more goals than he has played for the Dutch club and I’m sure Boro fans will be hoping he can produce the same at the Riverside.

Alves is highly rated in the Netherlands and is also a full Brazilian international. While Middlesbrough may not be the club that he would like to stay for a long time it is certainly a good platform to construct his reputation in the Premiership and maybe then move onto a bigger club.

Afonso Alves for Man City?

by sub on January 9th, 2008 1 comment

Heerenveen’s Alfonso Alves is the one of the hottest foreign properties in the Netherlands at the moment and everyone is eager to get the Brazilian international. And almost inevitably, it is the English Premier League high flyers Manchester City who are heading the bid to snatch away the player from the Abe Lenstra. That is as reported by Sky Sports.

City have been linked with a host of strikers and Alves is one who would be readily available. The player himself has acknowledged that he is looking for a move to one of the bigger leagues in Europe to sustain his place in the Brazilian national side and Heerenveen haven’t posed any obstacle in his path.

Alfonso Alves told his own website:

The last few days I have spent with my family and friends in Belo Horizonte. When I return to the Netherlands I hope to complete my transfer to one of the interested clubs. I want to continue my work and stay in the picture with national coach Dunga. I want to work myself into being a first-team regular with the Brazil national side.

Even struggling Middlesbrough have joined the hunt for Alves’ precious signature It doesn’t take rocket science to figure out which club out of Man City and Boro, the player would choose, that is if he opts to head for the Premiership at all.
