Gilberto looking forward to his Spurs debut

by sub on February 28th, 2008 5 comments
  • Digg

Tottenham Hotspur play Birmingham City in the English Premier League on Saturday and there is one player in the Spurs camp who is looking forward to the match more than anyone else.

And that player is Gilberto da Silva Melo who was signed from the German Bundesliga club Hertha Berlin in the January transfer period. The Brazilian international left-back has been out since his move to White Hart Lane with a calf strain but is set to make his debut for the north London club this weekend.

Gilberto says:

I had a muscle problem which hardly anyone knew about.

This Carling Cup victory shows why I left Hertha.

I wanted to play for a top team who can win the title.

Tile? What title?? Come on, you Spurs, please stop talking about the Premiership silverware for now!

Spurs sign Gilberto at long last

Goal.com reports that Tottenham Hotspur have ultimately signed Brazilian international left back Gilberto da Silva Melo from Hertha Berlin even after it was confirmed on Wednesday afternoon that the player had failed a medical fitness test at White Hart Lane.

After the results of that test was announced, it was widely reported that the move was now off and the German Bundesliga club’s website stated that the player would remain with them until the end of the season. But Spurs made a U(-U)-turn on their decision and have eventually signed the 31-year old.

Gilberto is a brilliant signing for Juande Ramos and his versatility would be a boon to this somewhat struggling Sours side. Gilberto is essentially a left back but his attacking instincts are exceptional.

Gilberto fails medical, wouldn’t move to White Hart Lane

Football UK reports that Gilberto have failed his second medical fitness test and wouldn’t be joining the English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur this month. The announcement come just days after it was virtually confirmed that the Hertha Berlin wing-back would switch to White Hart lane.

The pull out of Spurs at the last possible moment comes as a surprise to the German Bundesliga side but they must be smiling inside now that one of their prized assets is going to remain with them until at least the summer. For Spurs, the break down in talks implies that manager Juande Ramos is once again unable to get a player whom he wanted.

The 31-year had passed the first fitness test at White Hart Lane but couldn’t pass the second one. Somewhat strange, isn’t it?

Spurs about to sign Gilberto from Hertha Berlin

by sub on January 22nd, 2008 1 comment

Spurs manager Juande Ramos is searching for players throughout Europe to bolster his squad and he finally seems to have embarked on a player who could be lured to the troubled White Hart Lane. Sky Sports reports that Tottenham Hotspur are eager to sign the Brazilian international full back Gilberto from German Bundesliga club Hertha Berlin.

The Brazilian’s contract runs out at the end of the season and although Hertha are inclined to deal a new contract with the player, in all probabilities Gilberto will leave for greener pastures.

Spurs are short of quality defenders and Ramos is certain to change that this month. The Spaniard is said to deeply interested in importing Gilberto as soon as he can. Gilberto might not be a household name in the football community but he is certainly a quality full back who would have made the Brazilian first team on a regular basis had there been not too much traffic before him. Gilberto would be a sensible signing for Ramos.
