Tottenham Hotspur duo Heurelho Gomes and Roman Pavlyuchenko will leave the club this January after poor performances in the Carling Cup defeat to Stoke.

Gomes, 30, has lost his place in the first-team to new signing Brad Friedel and slipped further down the pecking order to third choice behind Carlo Cudicini.

The Brazilian’s appearance against the Potters was his first of the season and could have been his last for the club, manager Harry Redknaap confirmed.

“I would think he won’t be happy,” said the Spurs boss. “He wants to play at the World Cup (in 2014) with Brazil, so it’s going to be a problem.

“We’ll wait until the next window and see where that takes us.

“He’s done nothing wrong. He’s a fantastic goalkeeper and a great pro.

“I just went with Carlo in Greece (against PAOK in the Europa League) – and he (Cudicini) was magnificent.

“I’m very lucky I have three top goalkeepers here and it’s unlucky for the two not in the team.”

Gomes’ likely departure is almost certainly to be followed by striker Pavlyuchenko – with Russian sides Spartak Moscow and Lokomotiv Moscow preparing bids.

The 29-year-old’s wasteful finishing was blamed by Redknapp for the League Cup defeat and it is unlikely his future will be at White Hart Lane.

“If Pavlyuchenko had scored, Luongo wouldn’t have had to take a penatly, would he?,” Redknapp said after the 7-6 defeat on penalties.

“It would have been all over, but that is how it goes.”

Both Moscow clubs tracked the Russian international during the summer and, at one point, it seemed certain that he would leave, according to Talksport.

But following discussions with the manager, Pavlyuchenko opted to stay and fight for his first-team place, with Peter Crouch eventually sold.

But the arrival of Emmanuel Adebayor has again left ‘Pav’ s third choice striker at the club.

The situation will prompt his former club Spartak to move for him again in the New Year, with Lokomotiv also set to enter the bidding, which will start at around £10million.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp has confirmed Brad Friedel is his number one goalkeeper, raising doubts over Heurelho Gomes’ future at the club.

The 30-year-old was the Spurs boss’ first choice last term but Friedel’s arrival has caused Gomes to look for a new club in January.

Third-choice shot-stopper Carlo Cudicini was given the nod over the Brazilian despite Redknapp saying Gomes would start.

“I just changed my mind,” Redknapp said. “I thought it would be better for Carlo tonight.

“Gomes will get games. I will play him at Stoke in the Carling Cup next Tuesday.”

Redknapp will drop Cudicini for Sunday’s game against Liverpool, despite the Italian impressing in last night’s Europa League goalless draw against PAOK Salonika.

He gave away a first-half penalty, which PAOK missed, but made amends by pulling off three late saves to deny the Greek side and earn his side a valuable point.

“Yes, Carlo played well, but Brad Friedel has been fantastic,” Redknapp added. ”At the moment, in the Premier League, Brad has the jersey.

“I think he’s been magnificent. I’m lucky. We’ve got three top goalkeepers here.”

A point more obvious than a chat-up line involving the words ‘come’, ‘here’ and ‘often’, but retaining the services of the Welshman and his Croatian teammate is imperative if Spurs are to qualify for the Champions League next season. Despite enduring an injury-ridden second half of the season, Bale finished as Spurs’ third top scorer, whilst Modric was responsible for the most key passes made by any player in the team.

Should either player depart during the summer transfer window, the ramifications would go beyond the loss of the team’s best winger and creator-in-chief. As Harry Redknapp has mentioned on a number of occasions, the sale of top players sends a message to both current squad members and transfer targets. Unfortunately, that message starts with a painful introduction. ‘Welcome to Thursday night Europa League football on Channel 5’….

Find a striker that can score goals and possesses the pace, strength and aerial prowess to play with Rafael Van Der Vaart…erm…

Van der Vaart scored 13 goals last season (whilst chipping in with more assists than any of his teammates). In contrast, Tottenham’s three recognised strikers found the net 17 times between them. Despite Jermaine Defoe’s adolescent whining, the prospect of the Dutch international playing with such impotent poachers next season seems remote.

Redknapp’s forays in the January transfer market (remember the aborted attempt to sign almost any striker that played in Spain?), appear to confirm this. Yet, Van der Vaart’s form (and lack of tactical flexibility) means that it’s not a case of simply finding a goalscorer. Whoever arrives to play up front next season will be playing as a lone striker just ahead of the Dutchman, as part of Redknapp’s favoured 4-4-1-1 formation. This role requires aerial ability (think back to the contribution Crouch made to many of van der Vaart’s goals), strength, pace and a goal scorer’s instinct (if last season’s struggles are not to be repeated). In short, Rafa’s brilliance presents a £20 million problem….

You’ve just saved a penalty that could open the door for your team to make a last-ditch push for the Champions League. How do you react? Turn to the crowd and deliver an understated, David Seaman-esque pump of the fist? Do your best Peter Schmeichel impersonation by pushing delighted teammates away and manically waving your defence up-field? Or flap (twice) at the resulting corner, before hauling down a member of the opposition in order to repeat the experience (minus the save)?

Heurelho Gomes’ performance in the recent home fixture against Blackpool should spell the end of his tenure as Tottenham’s first choice keeper. The encounter with Ian Holloway’s men (which saw Gomes plunging to his left to save Charlie Adam’s spot-kick, before hauling Gary Taylor-Fletcher to the ground less than a minute later), came hot on the heels of matches against Real Madrid and Chelsea. Across both games, which went some way to defining Tottenham’s season, the Brazilian was solely at fault for at least three goals. In meaningful matches, Gomes has become a costly liability.

Invest time in Aaron Lennon (unless Ashley Young is available of course…)

Spurs and Arsenal have more in common than either club would care to admit. The presence of a sporadically brilliant, infuriatingly inconsistent right winger is chief among the similarities.

Aaron Lennon endured a difficult 2010/11 season. Unfairly (given the evidence available) lambasted for withdrawing from the team just before kick-off in the first leg of the Champions League quarter final, his relationship with both manager and fans has become strained. A failure to deliver telling crosses and score goals (Lennon found the back of the net on only three occasions last season), is frequently cited as a legitimate cause for complaint.

Yet this is a player who last season made as many key passes as Luka Modric and provides the team’s single source of pace in the absence of Gareth Bale. Surely Redknapp, Joe Jordan and the rest of the coaching staff should be investing time in improving his crossing on the run, ability to cut inside and shooting?

If Ashley Young is snapped up by Liverpool or Manchester United, the answer is undoubtedly yes. But if there is a chance that the combined promise of a guaranteed first team place and European football (even if it is played on a Thursday night), could tempt Young to London, it maybe time to cash in on Lennon. Young’s record last season (seven goals and ten assists, more than any Spurs player), is mightily impressive. His delivery from set-pieces and open play could prove to be the source of ammunition Tottenham so dearly miss in Bale’s absence.

Show a ruthless instinct when playing ‘lesser’ teams

Spurs gained six points out of a possible 18 from their clashes with last season’s relegated teams (Birmingham, Blackpool and West Ham). The cost of this lacklustre performance is starkly illustrated by the six point difference between fourth and fifth place in the final league table. Home victories against Blackpool and West Ham (coupled with one away win from the trips to Bloomfield Road and Upton Park) would have been sufficient to secure a Champions League qualifying spot for Tottenham.

William Gallas hinted at a possible answer to this ineptitude in dealing with matches against less talented teams, when he made reference to the team ‘maybe thinking we had won before we played’. This could be interpreted as a criticism of the starting eleven, but could it also be indicative of a failing on Redknapp’s behalf?

Spurs’ first half capitulations against Young Boys and Fulham in the FA Cup (together with their results against the bottom three), hint at a casual attitude to ‘smaller’ games that may permeate from the manager. A mentality of this kind is certainly reversible (witness the turnaround in Spurs’ approach towards games against the big four). Yet Redknapp would be wise to install ruthlessness in his team quickly: Arsenal’s fortunes over the last two months provide a study in what can happen if a psychological rot is not stopped.

Brad Friedel has agreed to join Tottenham Hotspur from Aston Villa after rejecting approaches from Liverpool and West Bromwich Albion.

The 40-year-old has signed a two-year deal to move to White Hart Lane and will be given the role of number one with  error-prone Heurelho Gomes on the transfer list.

Friedel has played for Liverpool and Blackburn before joining Villa and famously scored for Rovers against Charlton Athletic in 2004. He currently holds the record for the number of consecutive Premier League appearances with 275.

The former American international snubbed offers from his old club Liverpool because he did not want to Pepe Reina’s understudy and turned down a bid from Roy Hodgson’s Baggies.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is pleased with his acquisition and hopes Friedel will bring stability and experience to his defence.

“Brad is a top goalkeeper of real quality who has great experience,” he told the club’s website. ”It is good to have three such experienced top goalkeepers at the club in Gomes, Carlo and now Brad.

“It means we have competition for places particularly with the number of games we will hopefully face next year both domestically and in Europe as well.”

Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp is lining up a sensational bid for Birmingham City goalkeeper Ben Foster to replace PSV bound Heurelho Gomes.

The Spurs boss has finally run out of patience with his Brazilian shot-stopper who has made a series of high profile errors during his career in North London.

After his latest blunders against Real Madrid, Chelsea and Blackpool, Gomes lost his place in the team to reserve keeper Carlo Cudicini until the end of the season.

The 30-year-old is the subject of interest from his former club PSV Eindhoven but a fee is yet to be agreed between the two sides.

Redknapp will move quickly to sign Foster who impressed in his first season with Birmingham despite it ending in relegation.

He was crowned the Blues’ player of the season and named man of the match for his display in the Carling Cup final win over Arsenal.

Cash-strapped Birmingham are looking to sell Foster in order to reduce the wage bill. A bid of around £7million will enough to secure the 28-year-old’s signature.

Despite criticism over Tottenham Hotspurs’ strikers profligacy in front of goal, the side did score 78 goals in all competitions this season.

They were known as the great entertainers as they marched through Europe and conquered the likes of Young Boys, Inter Milan and AC Milan.

Reputations were secured (Luka Modric, Rafael van der Vaart), some were formed (Gareth Bale) and a few destroyed (Heurelho Gomes).

Harry Redknapp is ready to move for Ben Foster to replace blunder keeper Heurelho Gomes.

Tottenham boss Redknapp is a big admirer of the Birmingham keeper and is now keeping close tabs on him.

Redknapp wants to shake up his keepers this summer and, despite publicly backing Gomes, has lost patience with the Brazilian making so many mistakes.

Error-prone Gomes cost Tottenham valuable points with a high-profile gaffe against Chelsea 10 days ago and by conceding a penalty against Blackpool on Saturday, just moments after pulling off a spectacular save.

West Ham’s Rob Green is set to go to Aston Villa in the summer, but Redknapp believes Foster has more potential.

You can hardly blame Harry Redknapp for looking at potential replacements for Heurelho Gomes who has dropped a series of clangers since his arrival at White Hart Lane in the summer of 2008. The Brazilian appears to have fingers made out of butter and whilst Ben Foster has made high profile errors of his own the England international would appear to be a sensible replacement.

However, having guided Birmingham City to the Europa League there is of course the chance that the former Man United man may be happy to stay at St’ Andrews but that won’t stop Tottenham from trying to persuade the keeper into making the move to North London.

Tottenham’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League were extinguished last weekend as Heurelho Gomes added to his long list of goalkeeping gaffes.

Chelsea were allowed back into the game thanks to a costly error by the Brazilian keeper in which he fumbled an ambitious shot from Frank Lampard after Spurs had led for the majority of the first half.

The mistake has fuelled suggestions that Tottenham need to sacrifice Gomes for a more consistent keeper if they want to retain their status as a top Premiership side.

Gomes made a similar high profile error in the second leg of Tottenham’s Champions League quarter final match against Real Madrid which ended any hope of a miraculous comeback.

After the game he admitted ‘This was not my first mistake and I know it will not be the last’ and his words have rung true.

Despite his shortcomings Harry Redknapp has spoken out to defend his gaffe prone keeper.

‘He’s a top goalkeeper. He had a little dip in form when he first came but we stuck by him then,’ said Redknapp. ‘We have to back him up and get Tony Parks (goalkeeping coach) to keep him believing.’

Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp will attempt to bring Schalke goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to White Hart Lane this summer.

The Spurs boss wants the 25-year-old to replace Heurelho Gomes, who has made a string of high-profile errors in his time in North London.

The Germany international is out of contract in 2012 and has turned down a new deal offered by the Bundesliga club. Redknapp hopes he can get a cheaper deal than the £21million valuation.

“I have taken this decision without any external influence,” explained Neuer on his club’s website.

“The decision has nothing to do with the change of coach or any other person at another club.

“I have a great deal to thank Schalke and their unique fans for, but I would like to have the opportunity for a change after 20 years’ faithful service to this club.”

Neuer attracted strong interest from Manchester United as a replacement for Edwin van der Sar, but the Red Devils decided to go for Atletico Madrid’s David de Gea.

Schalke are resigned to losing their captain but Redknapp will face strong competition from Bayern Munich.

“As much as it hurts us, we have accepted this development and we respect it,” commented the club’s director of sport Horst Heldt.

“How things develop with Manuel Neuer will emerge in the coming weeks and maybe months, but we are now concentrating on our sporting challenges and the rest will follow in due course.”

Tottenham are ready to listen to offers for goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes.

The Daily Mail says manager Harry Redknapp refused to blame Gomes publicly for Spurs’ 1-0 defeat after the Brazilian spilled Cristiano Ronaldo’s speculative shot, but it’s understood it was the final straw for the Spurs boss.

Former PSV Eindhoven goalkeeper Gomes, 30, accepted full responsibility for his dreadful error against Madrid but admitted it is unlikely to be his last mistake.

When Heurelho Gomes first arrived at Tottenham he did so having been lauded as one of the best keepers in the Dutch Eredivisie where he regularly kept clean sheets for PSV Eindhoven and helped his side to four domestic titles. However within weeks of his arrival many were wondering what the hell they had let themselves in for.

The 30 year old keeper dropped a number of clangers and was regularly receiving abuse from White Hart Lane supporters who felt he wasn’t good enough. However he got through those bad times and was showing signs of improvement but his latest blunder has made people wonder if perhaps the Brazilian international is not up to the task.

This source believes that Harry Redknapp thinks likewise and other source believe that Man City back-up Shay Given is a Tottenham target but it seems highly unlikely that Roberto Mancini will allow that move to happen as it would clearly be assisting their top four rivals.

It is worth noting that whilst his mistake on Wednesday night was embarrassing, Gomes has kept eight clean sheets in his last 17 games, which is not bad at all.
