If you believe everything you read, then Chelsea are going to play with 11 strikers come the start of the season. The latest player to be linked to Stamford Bridge is Cristiano Ronaldo. No, I don’t believe it either. [Read the rest of this entry »]
It’s entirely possible that Sam Allardyce is in pole position to become the next manager of Blackburn Rovers. After all, he has been interviewed at Ewood Park about the position and has demonstrated his prowess in the Premier League with Bolton. Some might argue he might have done well at St James’ Park if he’d been given the opportunity, although that was cut short by some fickle fans and an owner who knows less about football than my great aunt. Cristiano Ronaldo might not be the only Portugeezer leaving Old Trafford this summer. The Daily Telegraph reports that Carlos Queiroz, the Manchester United assistant manager, is top of Portugal’s list to replace Phil Scolari after the latter decided to join Chelsea from 1st July. How ironic it would be if Chelsea’s decision-making had a direct impact on their main Premier League and Champions League rival.
Portugal want Manchester United assistant coach Carlos Queiroz to replace the exiting Luiz Felipe Scolari.
The Portuguese has emerged as the top target in wake of Scolari’s impending switch to Chelsea at the conclusion of the Euro 2008 finals.
The 55-year-old is currently on holiday in Mozambique but has not received any offers from the Portuguese Football Federation who are likely to make their move following the championships in Austria and Switzerland.
This is an interesting one, will Queiroz return to his national team’s set-up and take charge of some very talented players? Such a move would put any hopes of replacing Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United in jeopardy and, with Mark Hughes joining Man City, it could pave the way clear for Steve McClaren to become the next gaffer of the Red Devils (hardly).
Well, maybe not the fans favourite but he’s currently at the top of bookmakers’ lists. While Blackburn might talk of not rushing to appoint a replacement for Mark Hughes, the truth is that they can’t leave it very long at all, especially with player contracts to sort out and potential new signings to be lined up. The Guardian report that a shortlist is being drawn up at Ewood Park and, if the odds are anything to go by, this includes Shearer, Allardyce, Ince and Henk Ten Cate.
The Blackburn chairman, John Williams, hopes to conclude the search within the next 10 days, a timescale that would promote the prospects of the club-less Shearer, Allardyce and McClaren, given that Ten Cate is close to joining Panathinaikos. “We have received expressions of interest from a broad spectrum of interesting candidates; English and foreign, experienced and less experienced, and we are delighted with the calibre and the range,” Williams said yesterday. “I said at the outset, I’d like to get the new man in place within a fortnight and that is what we are aiming towards. Hopefully we’ll have made an appointment by the end of the week, or certainly early next week.”
Whoever takes over will have a tough act to follow, with Hughes dragging the club away from the relegation zone since he took over and making them into a top-half Premier League club. If his successor achieves a top ten finish next season, he’ll have done very well.
So aside from the news that Ronaldinho is set to…ahem…join Man City for £200,000 a week (does anyone else think this story is absolute bollocks?), the best news coming out of the Eastlands today is the report that City defender Richard Dunne no longer wants to be mates with Jonathan Woodgate.
The Manchester Evening News reports that Dunne is prepared to spurn Juande Ramos and Tottenham in favor of returning to City next season.
Manchester City captain Richard Dunne is to have fresh talks about a new contract with the club’s executive chairman Gary Cook. (Manchester Evening News)
With the rumours going on about Dunne leaving this summer for Spurs after Sven’s departure, the news coming out about a new contract is sure to make new manager Mark Hughes one happy man.
So what’s your take City supporters? Is Dunne the lynchpin you need to have in the squad next season to make a run at the top four?
