Liverpool’s new owners are ready to back Roy Hodgson in the race for £10million Ipswich wonderkid Connor Wickham.
While Arsenal, Chelsea and, most recently, Tottenham have had approaches rejected, the injury crisis at Portman Road and struggles of Roy Keane’s Championship side have caused a rethink, especially with Liverpool prepared to match their valuation for the 17-year-old striker.
Tottenham were willing to offer £8.5m based on appearances but Liverpool are ready to be more decisive. Under new owners John Henry and Tom Werner they are seeking to recruit the best young English talent.
They will pay Ipswich’s price and are confident that Wickham, a Liverpool fan who cites Fernando Torres as his favourite player, wants to join.
Hodgson had the 6ft 3in teenager watched extensively while he was managing Fulham and has followed him closely since.
Wickham shot to prominence with England Under 17s in the European Championship last May and has already represented England at Under 21 level. (Daily Mail)

There appears to be growing speculation that Liverpool are just one of many sides interested in the teenage striker who according to some reports, would prefer a move to north London over signing for the Anfield side. Roy Hodgson is hoping to bring in more attacking options but clearly any move for Ipswich youngster Connor Wickham would be a long term purchase and the Ipswich Town man would be unlikely to be in the first team reckoning this season.

Roy Keane is reportedly in danger of losing his job at Portman Road and the very poor recent run of form may well persuade Wickham to leave the Championship side in January rather than wait until the summer.

Newcastle United celebrated their Championship title with an entertaining draw at St James’ Park against an Ipswich Town side with little to play for. Andy Carroll scored his 19th goal of a very successful season to put the home side ahead but teenager Connor Wickham leveled for the Tractor Boys just before the break.

Shola Ameobi then put the Toon Army ahead with a spot-kick, his tenth goal of the season from just ten starts. Even a last gasp Jonathan Walters equalizer could dampen the celebrations as Chris Hughton and assistant Chris Calderwood enjoyed their triumph and the long suffering fans got to enjoy a swift return to the top flight.
