Wigan Athletic trio James McCarthy, Emmerson Boyce and Ben Watson have all agreed new contracts to stay at the club.

McCarthy, 20, who was named Wigan’s young player of the year for both seasons since his arrival, has committed his future to the club for the next five years.

Watson, 26, was signed from Crystal Palace two years ago but will remain at the DW Stadium for the next three years.

Defender Boyce, 31, who is closing on the club’s record tally of Premier League appearances, has signed for two years.

“In any transfer window, all we often hear about are possible new arrivals and targets coming out of the blue and we can sometimes forget the importance of keeping a really competitive core of players at the club,” manager Roberto Martinez said.

“We have been talking to several of our players and we are delighted to announce these first three, with hopefully more to come very soon.

“Having players commit their long-term futures provides the platform we need to build from.

“James is a young man with a very big future in the game, and it speaks volumes that he has chosen Wigan to carry on his football education.

“We are proud to have him as a Wigan Athletic player.

“Ben has grown to become a key member of the team over the past 12 months and has shown great maturity on the field.

“He is in the best moment of his career but I’m sure his best years still lie in front of him, here at the DW Stadium.

“As for Emmerson, what can we say?

“He is now in his sixth season at the club and is a true professional who continues to set the highest daily standards, he is an example to others around him and a true ambassador for Wigan Athletic.”

Liverpool are continuing to monitor Wigan midfielder James McCarthy.
The Republic of Ireland international turned down Liverpool to join Wigan from Hamilton Academical for £1million in 2009.
But manager Kenny Dalglish rates him highly as he looks to bring in young talent to bolster his squad.
Dalglish sent his assistant Sammy Lee to watch the 20-year-old during the Latic’s 1-1 draw with Everton last weekend.

James McCarthy has shown he is more than capable of cutting it in the Premier League after first exploding onto the scene as a fresh faced 16 year old at Hamilton. The midfielder was inundated with offers before he wisely opted for a move to the DW Stadium where he could be guaranteed regular first team football but now the youngster may well have outgrown the Latics and Kenny Dalglish is said to be very interested.

Roberto Martinez will of course find it even harder to keep the Republic of Ireland international at the club if they are relegated and apparently they have put an £8m valuation on the Glasgow born 20 year old and an offer from Anfield is apparently on the cards.

Liverpool’s new owners are apparently keen to invest in players with good potential and can be part of the club’s long term plans. Aside from the investment in new young signings such as Jonjo Shelvey and Raheem Sterling whilst seeing youth team graduates like Martin Kelly, John Flanagan and Jack Robinson all showing great potential.

Having already signed Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll by using the cash made from the sales of Fernando Torres and Ryan Babel, the Merseyside club have been linked with a myriad of new signings in the summer as Dalglish and director of football Damien Comolli make plans to build the next generation of talent that they hope will help the club in their push for a top four spot next term.

James McCarthy is a combative box to box midfielder who has adapted well to the Premier League and already has over 150 appearances to his name.

Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish wants to beat Chelsea to the signing of Wigan star James McCarthy – the one who got away from Anfield.

Dalglish is determined to land Glasgow-born Ireland starlet McCarthy as part of a major summer overhaul.

And the legendary manager thinks that he can persuade McCarthy to pick Merseyside ahead of London for his next move, which looks increasingly likecoming at the end of the season.

Chelsea wanted to land McCarthy in January and are still in the chase for him – although the exit of director of football Frank Arnesen leaves a ­question mark over their desperation for him.

Now Dalglish, poised to get theLiverpool job full-time, has decided to home in on McCarthy who was set to sign for former boss Rafa Benitez as a kid but opted to stay with Hamilton Accies.

McCarthy has already been to Liverpool’s HQ and played in a training game – when he was just 16 – and Benitez was keen to take him only for the top prospect to decide that first-team football with Hamilton was better.

Dalglish does not want to miss out on McCarthy again and thinks he would be ideal for a new-look squad that would also include fellow Scot Charlie Adam from Blackpool. McCarthy signed for Wigan and has proved himself to be one of the best young all-round midfielders in the top flight. Chelsea are willing to pay up to £7million for him.

Liverpool will match and ­possibly better that if Dalglish gets the money to invest.

And he hopes the quiet lad will prefer to stay in the area rather than be drawn to the capital.

James McCarthy first found himself on the football map when he broke on to the scene at Hamilton aged just 15 and indeed when he made his move to the Premier League in 2009 many had expected the Irish international midfielder to join one of the bigger clubs in the top tier but perhaps wisely the Glasgow born youngster opted for a move to the DW Stadium where he could get a fair bit of first team action but now it appears that a move may be on the cards.

Roberto Martinez faces a fight to keep the 20 year old, a fight that will become even more difficult if the Latics do not beat the drop and this source believes the fairly short move from Wigan to Merseyside may be the most likely one for the talented youngster.

Although McCarthy won’t turn 21 until November he already has over 150 appearances to his name and Kenny Dalglish in very much interested in signing the Wigan man as he looks to bring in top quality youthful options to complement the more experienced side of his squad.

Given the good form shown by the likes of Lucas and Raul Meireles as well as the mercurial skipper Steven Gerrard, it may prove problematic for McCarthy to earn himself a starting spot at Anfield but such is the upward trajectory of his career that he may well now feel he is able to take on all comers.

Chelsea’s interest will also be hard to ignore and Carlo Ancelotti is keen to bring in some younger players with a number of his Stamford Bridge squad getting on a bit. There has been a lot of talk about the potential exit of the likes of Florent Malouda, Didier Drogba, Nicolas Anelka and bit part players Paulo Ferreira and Jose Bosingwa and having already spent big on the likes of Fernando Torres and David Luiz there is clearly no qualms about meeting the £7m valuation.

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney will face Chelsea tomorrow night after the Football Association confirmed no action will be taken against him following his elbow on Wigan Athletic’s James McCarthy.

The England international was caught by cameras striking the Wigan midfielder’s head with the elbow in United’s 4-0 win.

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez insisted Rooney should have been sent off by referee Mark Clattenburg.

Rooney’s manager Sir Alex Ferguson dismissed the incident as a media witch-hunt against the 25-year-old.

Clattenburg awarded a free-kick but did not show Rooney a yellow or red card.

The FA were waiting for the referee’s report before deciding to use video evidence or not to charge the player.

But Clattenburg’s interpretation of the event means the FA have no power to act retrospectively within the current rules.

Rooney is now available to face rivals Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and he will be looking to extend his side’s lead at the top of the Premier League.

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney could be banned for tomorrow’s match at Chelsea.
The FA will decide today whether to charge him with violent conduct after an apparent elbow on Wigan’s James McCarthy on Saturday, and could suspend him for three matches, which would also include Sunday’s game against Liverpool at Anfield and an FA Cup clash with Arsenal should the Gunners get past Leyton Orient on Wednesday.

Referee Mark Clattenburg said he thought the foul was an accident, but Rooney could be charged with violent conduct if the official admits he made mistake when he submits his match report. (IMScouting)

It will be interesting if Mark Clattenburg decides to re-think his opinion of the incident that took place at the DW Stadium on Saturday. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is keeping a close eye on Wigan midfielder James McCarthy , according to the News of the World.

Wenger sent Arsenal’s chief scout Steve Rowley to watch the 19 year-old play against Bolton Wanderers recently. McCarthy only moved to Wigan over the summer from Scottish side Hamilton Academicals , where he had enjoyed two excellent seasons having made his first team debut aged 15.

McCarthy reportedly turned down interest from Liverpool and Tottenham at a young age. However, having impressed in a dozen games this season at Wigan, McCarthy could be set for a big club move with Arsenal showing their interest.

James McCarthy has been in the headlines for a few years now, ever since he made his debut as a 15 year old north of the border there have been a clamour of clubs looking to take on the talented teenager and it was Wigan who won the race for the Scottish born Republic of Ireland international and now it appears a move to the Emirates may be the midfielder’s next step.

Having arrived at the DW Stadium in the summer the Glasgow youngster had to wait until mid January for his first Premier League start during which he scored his first top flight goal and he hasn’t looked back since and has even won his first senior Ireland cap, having represented the nation at just about every level.

Arsene Wenger is known to be a fan and is reportedly ready to bid up to £9m for the 19 year old in the summer. Many may question whether the Emirates outfit needs more youthful players in its set up and indeed if McCarthy is quite ready to step up to a club as big as Arsenal but the youngster has already proven himself as able to flourish in the Premier League and if the Gunners do indeed make a move for the former Hamilton man I would imagine it would be very hard to stop such a move becoming a reality.

10) Daniel Sturridge, 19 (Chelsea)

A graduate of Manchester City’s successful youth team, Daniel is now among the ranks at Chelsea. The 19 year old looks sharp, Having scored already for Chelsea in pre-season – I just hope he gets first team action team he deserves . Sturridge made 16 appearances for Man City last season scoring four goals and provided three assists. The fans voted him Manchester City Young Player of the Season this year, If he emulates this success for Chelsea he will certainly prove his worth as a future England star.

9) James McCarthy, 18 (Wigan)

An array of Clubs over Europe have had their eye on James for a while, but it was Wolves and Wigan who made bids for the Ireland international. The Scottish born midfielder signed for Wigan this year for 3m, from Hamilton Athletic, leaving Scotland as Scottish PFA Young Player of the Year (2009) and with two young Player of the Month awards for December 2008 and January 2009. Let’s hope we see him repeat this individual success for Wigan.

8 ) Jordan Spence, 19 (West Ham)

At the tender age of 19 Spence is already in the history books for captaining the only England team (at under 17 level) to beat Brazil in a FIFA competition. He has since captained an undefeated U-19 team during the 2007-08 season, making 9 appearences and has been compared to the likes of Bobby Moore and Rio Ferdinand. It is no wonder that he has been tipped as a England’s future captain.

7) Fabian Delph, 19 (Aston Villa)

Aston Villa faced stiff competition for Manchester City and Everton when it came to signing the Leeds prodigy, but from what I have heard it seems to have been worth the effort. The under 21 international looks set to give competition to the Villa midfielders with two of Sidwell, Reo Coker, Downing and Petrov looking to deputise the central midfield positions –but I can see Delph earning a place come mid-season.

6) Kieran Gibbs, 19 (Arsenal)

When Clichy Injured himself against Tottenham, Gibbs took his chance to shine. He made appearances in important games in the Champions league , the FA Cup and the Premier league, yet he didn’t look out of his depth. It looks liekly that Gibbs is set to be our future England left back. (In the Stands)
