‘It doesn’t get much worse than this’ admits Spurs defender

by stresster on October 24th, 2008 9 comments

To be honest, it’s no disgrace losing 2-0 away to a team who are second in Serie A. Udinese could easily win the UEFA Cup this season, and the convoluted format of the competition means that Tottenham only have to win their home matches to ensure that they make the knockout stages. However, it was another blunder in defence, another red card and another dent to the fragile confidence of Juande Ramos’ men as they now look towards the Bolton game on Sunday. Spurs ‘need to work harder’ according to defender – or do they just need better players?

by stresster on August 19th, 2008 13 comments

Tottenham’s failure to beat Sunderland on Saturday will leave them travelling to Stamford Bridge on Sunday 31st August with no more than a point from their first two matches. There wasn’t much between Spurs and Middlesbrough last weekend, although the former are in danger of getting off to the same slow start which dogged the campaign last term. By the sounds of things, it’s going to take a while before the team get their act together under Juande Ramos. [Read the rest of this entry »]

Gormless Ledley King’s gammy knee keeps him out, but luckily Spurs’ season is already over

by Dexter on April 4th, 2008 1 comment
  • Digg

Tottenham’s injury prone defender Ledley King will sit out the rest of the season after realising that Tottenham are just going through the motions, and any playing time might exacerbate his already dodgy knee. ‘Ledders’ hopes that this layoff will give him the impetus to start next season off on the right note – either that or he’ll just bugger up his gammy knee again next year. King himself said:

“My knee is actually feeling good at the moment and there is no inflammation.
“But we have to look at the bigger picture and accept that this is an ideal point in time to recover further, get the best advice and make sure that I come back fitter. They are six games I could well have taken part in, but we all believe this is worth doing for the longer-term benefit.”

With Woogate and King at the back are the Spurs defence turning into a band of Douglas Bader impersonators?

Spurs are appalling & have nothing to play for – who cares?

by Dexter on April 1st, 2008 7 comments

Jonathan Woodgate has let rip with a public tongue lashing after his side disgraced themselves at home to Newcastle. Granted, the Tottenham squad probably have less to get up for in the morning than your average lifer in jail – but Juande Ramos was brought in with a reputation for running a tight ship so it is surprising that Spurs were so abysmal.
Woodgate griped:

“We need to go to Blackburn on Saturday and win — not draw. They are going for Europe and fighting on that front.

“I wish we were going for Europe because maybe that would give a few of the lads a kick up the arse. We need to be professional and work as hard as we can.

“The defeat at Manchester City was supposed to be a kick up the backside, but we obviously haven’t learnt. We’re not happy in the dressing room and we’re not going to be happy.”

It is hard to get too worked up about this, if some players are stupid enough to trot out tripe ridden displays then more fool them – Spurs may have nothing to play for with their Carling Cup win – but the players are playing for their futures under Ramos.

Tottenham defender admits snubbing Newcastle so he can win silverware instead

by stresster on March 29th, 2008 3 comments
  • Digg

Until last Saturday, it had been a long time since Newcastle had won a match and it’s been decades since the Magpies actually won any silverware (unless you’re counting second division titles). Therefore, it’s little wonder that Jonathan Woodgate instead chose to join Tottenham during the January transfer window, with his decision vindicated only a month later after scoring the winning goal for Spurs in the Carling Cup final. The Daily Mail reports that the former Middlesbrough and Real Madrid centre-half turned down a move to St James’ Park on a couple of occasions.

‘I just wanted a totally new challenge,’ said Woodgate. ‘If I had signed for Newcastle, I would have just been in the same surroundings. I didn’t want to get stale.

‘I am 28 now. Newcastle are going to be a good side in a few years but things can move faster at Spurs. I know I have made the right decision.’

Indeed, while Tottenham have made obvious progress since a change of management, the same cannot be said of Newcastle who appear to have gone backwards since the start of the season. Sam Allardyce was given little time to make his mark at the north-east club, while Kevin Keegan has endured a miserable set of results since taking over, despite having a poor squad at his disposal. It’s worrying that the Magpies will continue to get passed over by top quality players while they continue to flounder season after season.

Newcastle manager will battle to keep Tottenham target at St James’ Park

by stresster on March 29th, 2008 3 comments
  • Digg

But will his struggle in vain? COS yesterday reported that Charles N’Zogbia could be on his way out of the north-east at the end of the season and join Tottenham Hotspur, thus continuing the latter’s ploy to sign young English talent.

However, the fabulous Shields Gazette have reported that the creative midfielder isn’t going anywhere in a hurry as far as manager Kevin Keegan is concerned. The Magpies boss insists that Zoggy has a future at St James’ Park as King Kev sets about trying to rebuild his team in the summer. Like Jonathan Woodgate, will all this be in vain?

He told the Gazette: “I still see it the same – we have from now until the end of the season.

“His future lies here for as long as we want because he’s got a three-year contract.

“I told him to get his head down and work hard and then we would come back to that at the end of the season. That’s the promise I made him, and that’s what we’ll do. That has not changed.”

Howeve, we all know (even Keegan) that contracts mean very little in this day and age, apart from the fact that Newcastle would at least receive a hefty ransom for a player who has been in and out of the team throughout the season. There certainly appears to be little reason to keep squad players at the club against their will although United will have to work out how to make themselves more appealing to potentially new exciting players in the future.

Woodgate hurt, but you probably assumed that by now

by sub on March 1st, 2008 no comments

Bad news for Tottenham Hotspur. They are set to miss their centre-back Jonathan Woodgate for Saturday’s English Premier League match against Birmingham City at White Hart Lane with an ankle injury.

Well, I guess Spurs fans might be a bit apprehensive about this injury to Woodgate but you need not worry. It is just a small injury carried over from last weekend’s Carling Cup win over Chelsea and isn’t at all a long-term problem.

With Europe and a trophy sewn up, Spurs may actually just be playing it cautious rather than pushing their two star, but fragile, centre backs too much.

Tottenham defender moans about London house prices

by stresster on February 21st, 2008 15 comments
  • Digg

It is absolutely unbelievable to read in today’s Daily Telegraph that Jonathan Woodgate is having difficulty buying a house in London. Despite earning tens of thousands a week, the Tottenham defender has complained that property down south is too expensive, especially compared to Middlesbrough where the cost of living is particularly cheap. Yet another example of a player not knowing they’re born.

He said: “We need to find a place to live. We’ve seen apartments, we’ve seen houses and all the prices and it’s a lot more expensive down here than it is up north.

“I think you could buy 10 penthouses up north for the price of something down here.

“House prices are a joke, they are. It’s unbelievable. When you are looking about and you see some of the houses, you think “What?”

The £60,000 a week defender added: “But that’s London and that’s the way it is. Hopefully, I can find a house and get settled.

“You just want the right place for you and you want to get it at the right price. You don’t want to end up getting ripped off in any way, do you?

“It’s expensive for everyone, isn’t it? You don’t want to be blowing stupid money on a house.”

Yes, it is expensive for everyone Woodgate. Especially if you’re a nurse or a teacher and earn far less in a year than you do in a week. These sort of comments continue to give handsomely-paid footballers a bad name and will offend the vast majority of people who read them.

Woodgate optimistic of Spurs success

by sub on February 4th, 2008 1 comment
  • Digg

England defender Jonathan Woodgate is happy to be once more among people on his wavelength. The 28-year-old central defender, once regarded as  the most complete in Europe, was signed by Tottenham Hotspur from Middlesbrough last week. And Sky Sports quotes him as saying that he is now feeling buoyant about being part of a unit that is ambitious. Woodgate says:

”I could have stayed at Middlesbrough and had the easy, comfortable life, but I wanted to come to Spurs and play for a team who are going places. I want to play for a club with ambition who are trying to win trophies. With this manager and with these players, you can see what they’re trying to build. Being at Spurs reminds me of when I was at Leeds and we had all these new players coming in – I was excited. The fans are good at Spurs, the manager has won silverware, he looks the part and he knows what he’s doing – he’s a proper manager. I’m playing with good players here. Fabio Capello will come and watch a lot. It’s just down the road for him, but it’s four hours to Middlesbrough.”

Spurs might not be in the best of health this season but they are certainly likely to be more successful than Middlesbrough in coming seasons. For a player like Woodgate, who has donned on the shirt of Real Madrid, Boro were going to be stop-gap arrangement and under Juande Ramos at Spurs, the player can certainly aspire to move forward in his career.

Is “Sicknote” Woodgate the answer or just another problem?

by Dexter on January 29th, 2008 16 comments
  • Digg

The Sun reports that although Spurs last night managed to get their hands on Jonathan Woodgate – he was crippled before they signed him with a hamstring tweak that could have him out for a couple of weeks.
Spurs splurged £7million on Woody but the Sun are already asking if they have another Darren “Sicknote” Anderton on their hands, a man whose relationship with Tottenham was solely consummated on the treatment table.
Spurs beat off late interest from Aston Villa to bag their man and The Sun claims that:

“Woody signed a 3½-year contract with a two-year option in a deal that could be worth as much as £65,000 a week. Spurs boss Juande Ramos has been searching for a dominant centre-half to partner Ledley King.”

So will Woody be the answer or just another problem?

Newcastle or Spurs; who will Woodgate choose?

by Dexter on January 26th, 2008 37 comments
  • Digg

Guardian journo David Hytner reports that ‘Boro defender Jonathan Woodgate is having a long chin stroking session over whether to stay in the northeast and sign for Newcastle or to move down to London and play for Spurs. Both teams’ managers have obvious reasons to want to sign the former Real Madrid defender, with Juande Ramos presiding over a side with an extremely porous defence, and Newcastle boss Kevin Keegan not fancying his defensive options either. Hytner writes:

“Woodgate earns some £65,000 a week at Middlesbrough, with a percentage understood to be contributed by Real Madrid, whom he left for the Riverside in a £7m deal. Newcastle would have no trouble in matching those wages but they might represent a problem to Tottenham, where the wage ceiling is £50,000 a week.”

So who will Woodgate opt to sign for?

Would Spurs be able to lure Woodgate? Actually, they have…..

by sub on January 25th, 2008 15 comments

Jonathan Woodgate is on his way to White Hart Lane. Goal.com reports that his club Middlesbrough had granted Tottenham Hotspur permission to go and talk to Woodgate for a possible transfer this month and talks have shown results. Spurs’ £7 million bid for the player has been accepted and the deal will be concluded before the weekend.

Woodgate has discovered some reasonable stride with Boro after three injury-rocked seasons for Real Madrid. His injuries too have somewhat subsided and the signs are that the England international, even at 28 can recapture his Newcastle United form and peek once again.

Although Boro were not eager to sell the defender, Spurs’ manager Jaunde Ramos has managed convince Woodgate to swap Teeside for North London. Spurs are desperate for a world class central defender and in Woodgate Ramos has got what he needs.

Kevin Keegan wants Woodgate to return to St. James’ Park

by sub on January 24th, 2008 1 comment
  • Digg

Kevin Keegan is now after Jonathan Woodgate. That according to Shields Gazette that affirms that the newly appointed Newcastle United manager is keen on signing the former Newcastle United defender.

Woodgate was once thought to be one of the best central defenders in England and one of the very few complete defenders in Europe. But a string of injuries in the latter part of his Newcastle career and in his two years at Real Madrid dipped his form and reputation. Although the 28-year old England international is doing well at Middlesbrough, any club that signs him will be taking a gamble.

Yet Keegan knows the class and quality of Woodgate. And that is why he is reported to be ready to take the gamble on the injury-prone player. Woodgate would certainly be a great addition to the Newcastle squad but Boro wouldn’t let him go without a fight.
