The writing was on the wall earlier this week, when reports first emerged that Kevin Keegan had quit as Newcastle United manager. While the club eventually released a statement to confirm that King Kev was still in charge, this was all for nothing after the Magpies gaffer walked away from St James’ Park for the second time. According to many reports on Tuesday, there was no way back for Kevin Keegan at Newcastle, despite the board’s vote of confidence in the manager. However, he continues to remain in charge of the first team, despite missing two training sessions this week after protracted talks with Mike Ashley et al. It sounds like King Kev is willing to stay after all, but only on his terms. [Read the rest of this entry »]

The situation remains unclear at St James’ Park, where Mike Ashley and Kevin Keegan have clearly been embroiled in some heavy-duty discussions. Only the pair and the fly on the wall are aware of the latest state-of-play, and whether the Newcastle manager has any mileage left on Tyneside. However, one of his opposite numbers thinks that if King Kev isn’t getting the respect he deserves, there is no point in sticking around. Surely that happened when Dennis Wise came in? The transfer window has shut and, while there was plenty of excitement thanks to some high-profile manoeuvrings , there were a handful of players who didn’t get the moves that they were looking for. This includes a Newcastle striker who now remains on the sidelines at St James’ Park, although perhaps a new manager will have faith in him! [Read the rest of this entry »]

Just what is going on at Newcastle United? It had been widely suggested yesterday that Kevin Keegan was a goner at St James’ Park, after crisis talks had been held on Monday. However, the former England manager remains at the helm today…but for how long? [Read the rest of this entry »]

There’s never a dull moment on Tyneside, with Kevin Keegan seemingly staring down the barrel of the gun after ‘crisis talks’ with the Newcastle hierarchy on Monday. Has Special K managed the Magpies for the last time and will the supporters be appalled at the man about to replace him? [Read the rest of this entry »]

Despite a 3-0 tonking at the Emirates on Saturday, it’s been a reasonable start to the season for Newcastle, who drew 1-1 at Manchester United and beat Bolton 1-0. Nevertheless, if this latest report is to believed, the board aren’t particularly pleased with the way things are going and Kevin Keegan could be on borrowed time at St James’ Park. It’s clear that Mike Ashley has tightened the purse strings at St James’ Park, and the consequences could be bad as far as the team is concerned. Many fans will have been disappointed to see Newcastle lose James Milner, even if they did get £10 million from Aston Villa for him, and the words of their manager won’t fill them with confidence either. Things change quickly in the world of football. One minute a player is getting rave reviews for helping his team win a Carling Cup match, the next thing he has handed in a transfer request and then he’s gone – just like that. Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan must be pretty annoyed that he’s lost one of his best players to a Premier League rival. [Read the rest of this entry »]

Kevin Keegan has been in charge of the national side and, although it was an ill-fated reign, you’d think he has some idea of what’s required to play at international level. After his team’s exciting 3-2 extra-time win at Coventry last night, he has no doubt that one of his charges should be in the thoughts of Fabio Capello. [Read the rest of this entry »]

With Michael Owen, Mark Viduka and Obafemi Martins at the club, Newcastle are seemingly blessed with attacking quality, although injury seems to be persistent for the former two players. Therefore, perhaps it’s a blessing in disguise that they have kept hold of this striker, who was a hair’s breadth away from signing for Ipswich Town last week. Kevin Keegan is certainly pleased to have him back at the club! [Read the rest of this entry »]

That Everton have had a horrific summer is a given. Up until yesterday, they hadn’t signed anyone, despite watching a carousel of players waltz through the exit. Insult has been added to injury with winger Albert Riera holding out for a move to Liverpool, rather than signing for Everton, and now this; apparently Newcastle are sniffing around the very player that Moyes has been after all summer! It would be weird to see the Magpies becoming renowned for keeping clean sheets. For seasons on end, having a Newcastle defender in your fantasy team was akin to giving up the ghost, although their rearguard’s display against Manchester United hinted at better times to come for Keegan’s men. First came news that Newcastle owner Mike Ashley was scrimping over the suits of his players, making them pick up the tab for their sartorial needs. Next came word that Ashley hadn’t completed his due diligence and so was completely unaware that his team still owed instalments on several players. [Read the rest of this entry »]

Brad Friedel and David Bentley have already jumped the good ship Blackburn Rovers this summer, and there now appears to be a third exit on the horizon. It appeared that Paul Ince had retained the services of all key players bar the above pair, although an important defensive player has now stated he wants to leave Ewood Park. The Magpies finished 12th in the Premier League last season, but that doesn’t begin to tell the full story. After a bright enough start under Sam Allardyce, the performances started to become insipid, with the natives becoming increasingly restless at what they saw as a betrayal of the club’s playing style. Never mind that Newcastle were still mid-table during the Christmas break, United soon got shot of Big Sam, brought in King Kev and a relegation battle of sorts ensued. It’s rare that a player transfer goes through smoothly these days. It used to be the case that Team A rang Team B, told them that they wanted to sign Player X and, if Team B were willing to sell, a deal was struck pretty quickly. In an age where football is business, and the existence of agents is a thorn in the side of the game, we get long drawn-out affairs, such as the one happening at Newcastle. For those of us that play fantasy football, picking a Newcastle United defender in the past few seasons would not only see eyebrows raised from your peers, but also questions along the lines of ‘have you been smoking the crack pipe again?’.
