Sneijder: I won’t go to Man United as Ronaldo bait

by jakepjohnson on June 25th, 2008 2 comments

As the United-Real tug-of-war for Cristiano Ronaldo continues, a member of Real’s Dutch contingent has felt the need to speak out at rumours he may be heading to Old Trafford as part of an exchange agreement to assist the transfer.

Wesley Sneijder released a statement on his personal site, rejecting claims he was on his way to Manchester as part of a deal to bring Ronaldo to the Santiago Bernabéu. He told his fans that, despite interest from the newly-crowned European champions after a sparkling display at Euro 2008, he will remain in Madrid:

I’d like to comment briefly on the reports and rumours that I might be going to Manchester United as part of some kind of exchange deal

As I’ve said already, when I left Ajax, all I wanted was to go to Real Madrid. They are the best club in the world. And now that I’m here, all I want is to win as many trophies as I can with them and wear the white shirt for as long as possible.

In short, I’m flattered to be linked to Manchester United…but it’s not happening. End of story.

Many different types of deal have been flying about with regard to Ronaldo’s protracted move to Real. Some have been as high as €100million (£80million), others have including Real players, including Sneijder himself, Sergio Ramos and Brazillian Robinho. Sneijder proclaimed his objection to Robinho being mentioned, hoping the two linkwith Ronaldo this coming season:

The same rumours have been doing the rounds about Robinho. Well, I hope he stays too, and I hope that Cristiano Ronaldo joins us at the Bernabéu.

I’m sure United fans would like to see Sneijder or Robinho (or both) at Old Trafford, whilst also pocketing £40million or so. Yet, does Sneijder’s snub show that United are always second to Real Madrid’s reputation and money in terms of attracting players?

‘Ronaldo not happy with Manchester United stance’ says ‘close friend’

It must be difficult for newspapers when footballers and managers have the audacity not to say anything regarding their future. How can you bolster circulation throughout the summer months when they decide to keep schtum for a few weeks, keeping your reading public in the dark when they have a right to know?! Lyon set to ‘sell striker’s ear’ to Man United for 40 million

by stresster on June 13th, 2008 2 comments

Karim Benzema might be picking up a World Footballer of the Year award within the next few seasons. The French striker is still far from the real deal, although he’s had a fantastic season for Lyon and demonstrated in the Champions League against Manchester United that’s he’s hot property. It’s little surprise that the likes of the Red Devils, Real Madrid and Barcelona have been in the hunt for the Frenchman, although they’re going to be short on luck with this one. Man United captain ‘sure’ that superstar will stick around

by stresster on June 9th, 2008 3 comments

The month of June in the year 2008 will be remembered for the endless stream of speculation surrounding the future of Cristiano Ronaldo. Especially if the boy wonder helps Portugal win Euro 2008, which looks a distinct possibility after a hot-to-trot display against Turkey.

Despite the forward not wanting to talk about where he’ll be playing his football next year, that hasn’t stopped the likes of Gary Neville and Rio Ferdinand towing the club line and stating that they expect him to be among their ranks next season. According to Sky Sports, the latter thinks it’s a no-brainer as to where the Red Devils number seven will be plying his trade next season.

“At the end of the day he is a Man United player and long may that continue,” he said, adding he thought it was imperative that the club keeps him.

“I want him to be my team-mate because he is a fantastic footballer and that means we are going to be that bit more successful if we have got him in our ranks.

“As I said, I would love him to stay but I am not the man who makes the decisions at the club.

“So we are just like the fans really, we read the papers and listen to the TV and stuff and we’ll watch this space but I’m sure he will be a Man United player next season.”

You’re sure or you hope Rio? You can’t say you’re like a fan and then confidently assert that you think your star player will remain in Manchester. What would United do without their jewel in the crown? Worry quite a lot about how they can possibly retain The Premier League or indeed the Champions League next season?

Is signing for Manchester City a good move for Ronaldinho??

by Dexter on June 9th, 2008 9 comments

Football fans across the country are being left slack-jawed at the news that buck-toothed Brazilian skillster Ronaldinho could be signing for Manchester City, after their owner Thaksin Shinawatra put him at the top of his wanted list.

Ronaldinho is edging closer to a £200,000-a-week deal at Manchester City with Barcelona giving the Brazilian the go-ahead to wrap up a move to Eastlands.

City owner Thaksin Shinawatra has made the former World Footballer of the Year his top target after installing Mark Hughes as manager following last week’s dismissal of Sven-Goran Eriksson. (Telegraph)

The question is though, will this be a good move for Ronaldinho? Obviously it will be very healthy for his bank balance, but Ronaldinho’s form has been heading downwards for months now, has he got the requisite fitness to make his mark on The Premier League or will he just fritter his career away like he has been threatening to do in Barcelona?
