Villarreal’s Fuentes out for rest of the season

by sub on January 18th, 2008 no comments

Villarreal are going well in La Liga and are in genuine contention for a UEFA Champion League spot but as Sky Sports reports, they would have to continue chasing a prized berth in Europe’s top club competition without key defender Fabrico Fuentes.

Fuentes has been ruled out for 6 months after it was discovered that he has torn crucial ligaments in his left knee during a warm-up session against Recreativo de Huelva in a Copa Del Rey tie. The player will undergo a surgery next week which shall keep him out of all footballing action for the rest of the season.

His injury comes as huge blow to coach Manuel Pellegrini who may require a replacement signing to replace Fuentes. Since joining the Spanish club in the summer of 2006, Fuentes has developed into one of the key components of this slick Villarreal side and his lose is certainly going to cut deep for the Yellow Submarine.
