Liverpool defender Martin Kelly is confident the defensive work his club do in training will reap their own rewards later season.

The 21-year-old has seen his club only keep two clean sheets all season – both against 10 men (Arsenal, Everton).

Jose Reina has almost always been in the running for the Premier League Golden Glove for most clean sheets and has won the award three times.

Even League One strugglers Exeter managed to breach the defences in the Carling Cup in August.

Kelly, along with team-mates Jordan Henderson, John Flanagan and Jonjo Shelvey, are currently training with the England U21s.

But he hopes the team can now move forward with a bit more confidence and a few more clean sheets.

“We’ve been working hard in training as a defensive unit,” he said.

“We’ve been trying to get the right balance between attacking and defending so that when we lose the ball we’re not too open.

“We did that well against Everton. We’re all made up with the clean sheet and now we want to keep more of them.”

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish is so pleased with defender Martin Skrtel that he will be continued to be played out of position.

The 26-year-old has been forced to fill-in at right-back for the last two games due to injuries to Glen Johnson and Martin Kelly.

The Slovakia international is likely to come up against Gareth Bale at White Hart Lane on Sunday but Dalglish has no worries.

Kelly is close to making a return to fitness after a hamstring injury against Bolton at the end of last month and could conceivably depose Skrtel on the right of defence.

But he faces stiff competition for the centre-back spot in Jamie Carragher, Daniel Agger and new Uruguayan signing Sebastian Coates.

“He is playing out of position but it is not a problem for him,” said the Reds boss. ”He came on against Bolton and was very comfortable.

“He has thrown himself into the right-back position and done brilliantly and he doesn’t look out of place to me.

“If we have to keep him there then we have to keep him there.

“There is no way Martin Skrtel is going to let you down for lack of commitment.” Dalglish added.

“One of the benefits of this group of players is that they are prepared to play wherever they can get a game.

“They will do their very best and if it is not right it is not their problem it is our problem.

“Martin has been given the opportunity and he has done the best he can to continue to do it and if someone else gets the opportunity they will be exactly the same.”

Liverpool defender Glen Johnson has agreed a contract extension to remain at the club for ‘the long-term’.

The 26-year-old joined from Portsmouth in 2009 and has two years left on his current deal but the new contract should keep him at the club into his 30s.

The England international endured a difficult start due to injuries and lost his place to teenager Martin Kelly.

He re-emerged at left-back and contributed to helping resurrect Liverpool’s season.

Johnson has made 70 appearances for the Reds but director of football Damien Comolli believes he has not yet reached his prime and is excited to see him fulfil his potential at Anfield.

“We are absolutely delighted,” Comolli told the club’s website.

“We were in talks for a few weeks but it was easy to find an agreement because he wanted to stay and we wanted him to stay.

“We are very pleased he wants to commit long term and I think he was pleased we went to him and asked him to commit long term.

“We are happy his long-term future is at Liverpool.

“His best years are to come,” he added. “Very often defenders peak between 26 and 31, so he is just entering into those years where a maturity comes in and his knowledge of the game gets better and better.

“It’s obvious when you watch him play his technical ability is second to none.

“Physically he is absolutely fantastic as well and his fitness level is great.

“Towards the end of last season he showed how versatile he is by playing at left-back or right-back – mostly at left-back – and was outstanding.

“For us he is a great asset to have around. As we’ve always said, we don’t want to sell our best players or sell our assets and as long as the players are happy to be here, we’re happy to commit to them.”

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish has vowed that this summer will be ‘very important’ for the Reds, as he looks to stamp his mark on the team he inherited in January from former boss Roy Hodgson. Reports suggest as many as 7 Liverpool players could be on their way out of Anfield with the likes of Joe Cole, Milan Jovanovic and Christian Poulsen all struggling to make an impact since their arrival last summer.

The Anfield outfit have endured one of their most turbulent seasons in recent years having been plagued with injuries throughout the campaign. “If we’re convinced we have young players who are maybe better than what’s available, then we’ll keep our younger players. But that’s not to say we don’t want to improve as a football club in any way.”

Liverpool are facing another defensive crisis as Daniel Agger will not play again this season because of a knee injury the club confirmed today.

Full-backs Glen Johnson and Martin Kelly will also be out for up to four weeks meaning they will only be back for the last two games.

The news is a massive blow for manager Kenny Dalglish who is already waiting the results of the scans for captain Steven Gerrard.

The 30-year-old was due to play against West Brom last Saturday but suffered a recurrence of the groin injury that required surgery a month ago.

But it is not all bad news for Dalglish as Fabio Aurelio, Jonjo Shelvey and David Ngog are back in training.

“Daniel has a problem with the tendon behind his knee and won’t be involved again this season,” Dalglish told the club’s website.

“He’ll be out for a couple of months before he can start training.

“Glen Johnson has a hamstring problem which is usually about three or four weeks and it’s the same for Martin Kelly.

“We will know about Steven at the end of the week. He will be assessed and we’ll see what the story is.

“It’s disappointing for the players because they want to play in every game. We’re getting towards the end of the season but if you’re injured you’re injured.

“We feel for them but the most important people at the football club are the ones who are fit and able to play. We have to get on with what we’ve got.

“Fabio Aurelio and Jonjo Shelvey are training again and David Ngog had a game for the reserves on Monday. So we’ve lost some but we’ve got a few back.”

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is back in training ahead of his side’s trip to face former manager Roy Hodgson at the Hawthorns on Saturday.

Along with Jonjo Shelvey, Gerrard is ready to lead the chase to catch Tottenham Hotspur in fifth and gain European qualification for next season.

Liverpool players Steven Gerrard, Martin Kelly, Jonjo Shelvey and Fabio Aurelio will all return to full training next week, according to the first-team coach Steve Clarke.

Captain Gerrard has been sidelined for three games following groin surgery and will be a major boost for the Reds who are chasing Tottenham for the fifth place in the Premier League.

Kelly and Aurelio (hamstring) have been out for a month, while Shelvey (knee) has been in out since early February.

Clarke says they will be back in training next week and is optimistic about playing in the next league game, away to West Bromwich Albion.

“Fingers crossed, we will have Martin Kelly and Steven Gerrard back training by the middle of next week. We hope the same for Jonjo Shelvey, who has been out for a long time.

“Fabio Aurelio is also making good progress.

“They’re our four longer-term injuries, the ones that have been causing us a bit of concern recently, but hopefully they’ll all join in training next week.”

Liverpool duo Daniel Agger and Jonjo Shelvey are back in training following injury problems.

But the pair will not recover in time to feature in the club’s attempts to overturn a 1-0 deficit in their Europa League tie with Braga.

Liverpool defender Martin Kelly will miss the next month of the season after suffering a hamstring tear.

The 20-year-old sustained the injury in the 3-1 defeat away to West Ham when chasing after Scott Parker and was promptly substituted.

It is a huge blow for the England U21 international who has been very impressive in the right-back role since Kenny Dalglish was appointed manager in January.
