Arsenal have finally offered Thierry Henry a contract to return to the club on a two-month loan.
Arsene Wenger had been mulling over whether to take back the club’s all-time leading goalscorer to boost his side’s chances of finishing in the top four.

With Gervinho and Marouane Chamakh heading to the Africa Cup of Nations next month, the Arsenal manager has concluded that top scorer
Robin van Persie needs help to lighten his scoring burden.
Wenger decided to make the offer after the 34-year-old returned from holiday in Mexico this week. Henry has a $4.5million (£2.9m) deal with New York Red Bulls but has been training with Arsenal in the MLS off-season and does not have to return to America until March.

One would imagine that the only obstacle in the way of this deal becoming a reality may be down to whether Thierry Henry’s New York Red Bulls side would be allow their star player to sign a deal to play for Arsenal for two months. The MLS side may feel that agreeing to such a deal would be risky and given that David Beckham completed a similar deal to play for AC Milan and then suffered a serious injury.

Clearly Arsenal would have to make a lucrative enough offer for Thierry Henry to make an emotional return to the North London club he served with such recognition between 1997 and 2007.

Henry would in theory be available for up to seven Premier League games as well as FA Cup encounters and the knock-out Champions League fixture with AC Milan and the 34 year old would provide Gunners boss Arsene Wenger with much needed support up front.

With Gervinho and Marouane Chamakh set to be away on African Nations Cup duty there is a very real need to bring in alternative options up front, an area that Robin Van Persie is already pretty much operating alone and the addition of Thierry Henry may well help share the goal-scoring burden that the Dutchman appears to be carrying alone.

Liverpool have confirmed that they have offered a trial to American forward Juan Sebastian Agudelo, who currently plays for Major League Soccer club the New York Red Bulls.

Agudelo, who was born in Colombia, has played internationally for the United States at Under-17 and Under-20 levels, as well as achieving 15 caps for the full national team.

After moving to the United States at the age of seven, Agudelo joined the New York Red Bull Academy and rapidly established himself as one of the most exciting prospects at the club and in the MLS.

Indeed, Agudelo is now looking to make the move to Europe to truly establish his name on the world stage, and should his trial at Liverpool prove successful, he could be signed during the January transfer window.

Some sources have stated that Agudelo is in talks with Liverpool ahead of a permanent move from the New York Red Bulls to Anfield after the 20 year old impressed Liverpool scouts who have been tracking the Colombian born attacker’s progress in the MLS.

The US international had a great season with the Red Bulls and is now a regular in Jurgen Klinsmann’s national team set-up and now director of football Damien Comolli is looking to bring the £6m rated youngster to Merseyside as part of the club’s continuing policy of building for the future.

Liverpool have signed a number of young talents who have impressed elsewhere before moving to the Premier League side. Players such as Jordan Henderson, Sebastian Coates, Danny Wilson, Andy Carroll and Jonjo Shelvey have been signed over the past 18 months and a fair few players have come through the club’s academy system and into the first team picture including Martin Kelly, Jay Spearing, John Flanagan and Jack Robinson.

Aguedelo is a powerfully built forward who can play out wide but is more suited to a central striking role.

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp is reportedly considering making an offer for Man United striker Michael Owen. The former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Newcastle United man is believed to be ready to consider a move away from Old Trafford in order to pursue regular first team football and could be tempted into a move to the capital where newly promoted Qpr are also said to be plotting a bid for the 31 year old.

White Hart Lane boss Redknapp has seen two of last season’s striking quartet, Peter Crouch and Robbie Keane, leave for Stoke City and LA Galaxy respectively and now the North London boss is looking to beef up his attacking options to add to his loan capture of Emmanuel Adebayor.

Roman Pavlyuchenko has failed to impress thus far this season but England international Jermain Defoe has struck three goals in four Premier League appearances but Redknapp feels he needs further support to help the club break back into the top four as well as mounting concerted campaigns to win a cup trophy this season.

Qpr chairman Tony Fernandes is also keeping a close eye on the experienced striker and could make a move to bring the high profile signing to Loftus Road having helped to land Joey Barton, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Anton Ferdinand, among others, during the summer transfer window.

Neil Warnock could well do with an injection of firepower having seen his West London side net just four goals in five games and the signing of Owen could be just the kind of deal that could help secure the Super Hoops presence in the English top tier and therefore his high wage demands would be well worth forking out for, not least as any fee to be paid to Man United is likely to be nominal given that the former England international’s contract comes to an end next summer.

MLS side New York Red Bulls as the third club ready to make inquiries about the Man United man and a move to the States may appeal to Michael Owen.as a potential new challenge and one that could be very lucrative for the striker.

Sir Alex Ferguson may well be willing to allow Owen to leave given the emergence of Danny Welbeck on the scene and the flourishing partnership of Javier Hernandez and Wayne Rooney up front.

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry was denied an emotional return to the club by referee Kevin Friend during the Emirates Cup.

Both the 33-year-old and Gunners boss Arsene Wenger were keen for him to switch sides and play the final five minutes of the friendly against the New York Red Bulls.

But Friend had to refuse permission because it is against Fifa rules for a player to appear for both clubs in the same game.

Henry and Wenger were left fuming after the gesture was planned as a surprise for the Arsenal fans who turned up to welcome their hero back to north London.

But Wenger said: “We wanted him to play in the last five minutes for us and he was desperate to do it, but the referee stubbornly turned it down.

“I went even in to see the referee to ask him if he would allow him to play for us.”

Ironically, it was Henry who helped lay on the Red Bulls’ equaliser during the time in which Arsenal had planned him to switch sides.

Henry himself said: “They have some weird rules, FIFA or whatever.

“They asked me and I said yes. But it doesn’t matter, I played enough games in the shirt.”

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has ruled midfielder Jack Wilshere out of the England friendly against Holland.

The 19-year-old injured his ankle in the first five minutes of the Emirates Cup tie with New York Red Bulls and is a major doubt for next week’s trip to Benfica.

Wenger has declared if Wilshere does not make the trip to Portugal than he will certainly not feature in the Wembley showpiece.

The Frenchman has already clashed with England coaching staff over Wilshere, who was selected for the U21 European Championships before withdrawing over burnout fears.

Fabio Capello could still call him up in the hope he is available to play against the Dutch, with fellow midfielders Steven Gerrard and Theo Walcott already out.

“If he’s out next week, he will not play in Benfica, so he will certainly not play for the England game,” Wenger said.

Confirming Wilshere had not torn anything but that his ankle was inflamed, he added: “He’s a quick healer usually, and a tough boy, so I hope he’ll be quicker than the medical prediction.”

Arsenal appeared to shrug off the loss of Wilshere yesterday and lift the Emirates Cup for the fourth time in five years before once again conceding a late equalise.

They were booed by their own fans at the final whistle, which did not bode well for the new season, with Arsenal supporters forced to endure so much suffering last term.

Wenger chided them, saying: “I can understand they want us to win but I don’t think we need to put any extra pressure on us now.

“The most important is to prepare and to take the pressure on when results really matter.”
