It’s been a goaltastic start to the campaign for Martin O’Neill’s men, with thirteen goals notched in their first five matches. OK, so four of those have been against FH Hafnarfjordur, although it’s clear that the Irishman has been sending out his team with the express intention of getting stuck into the opposition, even at the risk of shipping goals at the other end. Is another striker what the squad needs? [Read the rest of this entry »]
Reading are among the favourites to win next season’s Championship, although their hopes of making an immediate return to the Premier League have been seriously dented today. While Steve Coppell was hopeful of keeping hold of one of his star players, the lure of playing in the top flight has proved too much for this England international. [Read the rest of this entry »]
Harry Redknapp is probably the Premier League manager who most likes to bang on about how small his squad is. While others are probably equally, if not more, concerned by the need to strengthen in certain areas of the pitch, they don’t rabbit on about it like the Portsmouth gaffer. Thankfully, it appears that two new players are to arrive at Fratton Park this week, which should at least mean that Pompey have eleven players to field for their first game of the season at Chelsea! Fa Cup-winning manager Harry Redknapp has admitted he is looking to sign Reading’s England international left-back.
Nicky Shorey, who won his first England cap against Brazil last year, is high on Pompey’s shopping list and, following Reading’s relegation to the Championship, could be close to a cut-price move to Fratton Park.
The move would be good for both sides. Pompey look to expand a squad that’s left with 3 players and a ball-boy whenever African international matches are played. Whereas, Shorey can get back in a successful team and perhaps push into Fabio Capello’s England squads. Redknapp told the Reading Evening Post:
Shorey is a player I like. He’s a good player and a good footballer. We’re looking for players who would give us something a bit different and he would do that.
Shorey was linked to Newcastle and West Ham last season, with Reading turning down a bid from the latter, but following the Royals relegation, the 27-year-old’s wages are likely to lead to his reluctant departure.
Pompey prepare for their first ever season in Europe and Harry Redknapp knows he needs a larger squad capable of challenging for honours:
He would give us something different to Hermann (Hreidarsson). Having said that, Hermann did a fantastic job for us and was brilliant for me. But we are going to need a squad and we are going to need cover.
We are going to be playing more games than ever next season and it’s going to be a lot tougher for us.
Reading have been suffering a tormenting season in the Premiership and are yet to assure themselves of not dowing down the gutter into the Championship at the end of the season.
Their best player this season has been Nicky Shorey and even then he was out of sorts in the early weeks of the season. But the England international says that he is now focused on Reading and admits that it was the mounting speculation on his future at the Royals that adversely affected his performance.
Shorey says:
It probably affected me through the early stages of the season until we come to the decision to put it on hold until the summer.
Ever since I’ve done that I’ve had an upturn in my performances.
I think that’s helped me to put it to one side. It has helped me personally and the team as well, so it’s good.
The Reading fans pray that Shorey lifts the Royals out of the relegation war zone.
The jewel in Reading’s crown, full back Nicky Shorey, has postponed contract negotiations with the club until the summer prompting speculation that Shorey is waiting to see if Reading get relegated or not. Director of football at Reading Nick Hammond reckons that Shorey will sign eventually, telling the Reading Evening Post:
“In all honesty I think we will look again in the summer and see what the situation is then. He still has a year on his contract to run after this season.”
But when Hammond was asked whether Shorey was delaying a decision to see if Reading go down or not he became more guarded, saying:
“You’d need to speak to him in that respect.
“I think he’d already made the decision (about whether he wanted to sign a new deal) at the start of this season and there’s no reason why that has changed.
“The important thing now is that he performs well up until the summer and then we will speak again.”
But will Shorey, Reading’s best asset, want to extend his contract even if they stay up?
