The BBC report that Everton manager David Moyes has defended his decision to rest several key players during Saturday’s 1-0 FA Cup defeat against Oldham. Phil Neville, Tim Howard and Yakubu were all rested for the match, although surely the team he fielded should have been too strong for their League One opponents.
“It wasn’t a vastly weakened team at all,” he said after the 1-0 loss at Goodison Park. “I felt it was strong.
“I would have expected the team I put out to have been good enough to win.
“It was very much the midfield that played and won away to Alkmaar in the Uefa Cup.
“We have looked as if we could score lots of goals, but Oldham defended fantastically well and scored an opportunist goal just before the break.
“We never really got to grips with them. We did not under-estimate them, we rated them very highly.”
Listening to David Moyes’ post-match comments on Saturday, did anyone get the impression that the Everton manager wasn’t particularly bothered about losing to Oldham? OK, so he’d prefer to still be in the competition but he was hardly incandescent with rage. Perhaps this has something to do with his team nearing fourth place in the Premier League and with a Carling Cup semi-final match against Chelsea next week.

The ever-popular Three Things series has expanded to include matchday action, and this weekend we’ll be dealing with the glorious Fa Cup. Some people saw this match in all its live glory, others on the telly, and some not at all. Either way everyone probably saw it differently and here’s your chance to tell each other what you learned.
So forget the numpteys at Sky Sports or the nerds at the BBC, here’s your chance to tell everyone the three things you learned from this match and see what others thought as well.
The magic of the FA Cup continues! A dire result for Everton, who can add this painful loss to injury ravaged Oldham (currently 13th in League 1) to their recent painful losses to Man Utd (to a late penalty) and Arsenal (losing 4-1 at home).
