When it was announced that Steven Gerrard and Owen Hargreaves would be unavailable for England’s games against Andorra and Croatia, some members of the press had a field day. Are Liverpool and Man United managers really doing a number on England boss?

by stresster on August 29th, 2008 8 comments

That’s what a certain newspaper is claiming today in typically overblown fashion. While it’s common to see clubs withdraw players ahead of international friendly matches (Sir Alex Ferguson has made this into an art form), it’s less common to see them do this for World Cup qualifying fixtures. Man United midfielder against global venture

by sub on February 16th, 2008 no comments

Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has voiced his firm opposition to the idea of staging Premiership matches abroad. A recent Premier League proposal was to make top flighh clubs in England to play an extra fixture each on foreign soil and the move has met with more opposition than support.

Hargreaves is in his first season in the Premiership but like his Man United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is not too eager to shake hands with the Premier League on the matter. He says:

I think it’s difficult. Yes it’s good to promote the league, but how much do you really need to promote the Premier League? It’s the biggest league in the world as it is.

From the fans’ point of view, I think it’s poor because it means a lot to them and just to play games in New York or Shanghai or wherever for whatever reason — it must be money — is a shame for the people who pay to watch their team week in, week out.

If it’s one game, it depends, but anyone who travels knows that to fly ten hours takes a lot out of your body, especially if you’re being asked to play 90 minutes at the highest level the next day,” he explained. “But when you play at the highest level week in, week out — Man United, England, Champions League — the demands on your body are extreme.

I don’t think it’s healthy for anyone to do this at the highest level for an extended period of time. The players who have been playing at this level for a long time, like Scholesy [Paul Scholes] and Giggsy [Ryan Giggs] are remarkable really.

People has asked the players and the fans to voice their opinion on the subject and while the fans have already expressed their disdain to the situation, the players too are not reluctant to follow the idea. Maybe the Premier League can comprehend that their ambitious proposal is not going to cut ice.

Hargreaves gearing up for FA Cup showdown against Spurs

by sub on January 25th, 2008 no comments

Manchester United play Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup fourth round at Old Trafford on Sunday and the Premiership leaders are up for it. Midfielder Owen Hargreaves is one player who is not daunted by taking on Premier League oppositions in the FA Cup and tell the Manchester United official website:

To play at Wembley against one of the top teams would be brilliant. But we will take step by step, focus on Tottenham and take it from there. They have some fabulous players and I think it is just a case of them trying to find the right balance. I look forward to every game and the atmosphere against Tottenham will be exceptional. As it is a home game for us, it becomes a must-win situation.

Man United have a history of performing well at home in the FA Cup and would certainly be itching themselves for a riot. Sir Alex Ferguson takes the competition seriously and after having waved off Aston Villa 2-0 in the last round with a pragmatic but not so romantic display, maybe Fergie would want his team to turn up the style against Spurs in Sunday. But hey, Spurs are no pushovers all right. They demolished Arsenal 5-1 in midweek in the Carling Cup semi-final second leg and manager Juande Ramos would surely be geeing up his boys against the reigning Premiership champions.

Man Utd star says it is a 3 horse race for the title – sorry Liverpool!

by Dexter on January 22nd, 2008 13 comments
  • Digg

Man Utd midfielder Owen Hargreaves has told the Sun that when thinking about the title contenders he doesn’t look beyond the top three of Arsenal, United, and Chelsea, and claims that the gap between the front runners and Liverpool is simply too big a gap to bridge.
Hargreaves said:

“I looked at the Premier League table on Saturday evening and Liverpool were 15 points behind us.

“I know they had a couple of games in hand but that is still a massive gap for them to close at this stage of the season. So it looks to me as though it’s going to be a three-horse race between United, Arsenal and Chelsea.

“Chelsea have done really well to hang in during a tough period when they have changed their manager — and they are still contenders.

“But I can’t see anyone beyond the current top three as title winners and hopefully in May we’ll still be on top and looking down on everyone else.”

Hmm…Owen “Sherlock Holmes” Hargreaves – we salute you for stating such a fluorescently obvious point!
