Peter Kenyon probably wasn’t expecting to hear from Steve Staunton about the vacant Chelsea manager’s job this week, although someone who sounded suspiciously like the former Republic of Ireland manager got through to the chief executive at Stamford Bridge! [Read the rest of this entry »]

Despite Phil Scolari claiming that Chelsea currently have a bureaucratic team (whatever that means), and that the sale of Arjen Robben along with the failure to snare Robinho means that they apparently haven’t got any flair players, it appears as though the club are in rush to but any crowd-pleasers. While it wasn’t exactly the Chelsea ‘B’ team that took to the field at the Riverside last Saturday, there were a number of key players missing in action. Some thought that Middlesbrough stood half a chance of getting something out of the game. 120 minutes later, the home team had been utterly humiliated by a 5-0 scoreline, and it was clear that Phil Scolari’s squad has strength in depth. We reported yesterday that Real Madrid president Roman Calderon (a man clearly used to getting his own way) was not having any of it when the subject of Robinho moving to Chelsea cropped up. He claimed that the Spanish champions were super-keen to keep hold of their Brazilian forward, especially after the club failed to bring Cristiano Ronaldo to the Bernabeu. It looks like he’s going to get his way if this report is to be believed. [Read the rest of this entry »]
Peter Kenyon isn’t one to let stats get in the way of the truth. While most of us might consider a return of 22 goals for the princely sum of £30 million a little extravagant, there are others amongst us that are far too sensible to simply associate strikers with scoring goals. After all, there’s the bench to be warmed on a regular basis, while those Carling Cup matches against lower-league opposition need eleven men in a blue shirt to go through the motions. The time is rapidly running out for clubs to land new players before the transfer window slams shut, potentially leaving teams short in key areas for months on end before January arrives. Chelsea can’t exactly say that they’re short of quality in any department (apart from grace, respect and manners), although it’s clear that they’re desperate to seal the deal for this £23 million Real Madrid star. They’re certainly one of Europe’s biggest clubs these days, although managing to shoehorn all of Chelsea’s attacking talents into one side is going to take some doing if this signing does indeed go through. It’s certainly moved from ‘possible’ to ‘probable’ in the past 48 hours, with Peter Kenyon travelling to Spain and negotiating a deal to bring a Brazilian with a lot of flair to England. When the Blues are sniffing around a player, the selling club in question clearly see pound (or euro) signs in their eyes and raise their valuation, simply because it’s Chelsea. They know that, unlike Arsenal or Liverpool, the west London club are happy to operate at a loss in order to be a) successful on the pitch, b) grow the brand globally and c) take over the world. Therefore, the transfer ransom often soars to astronomical proportions. [Read the rest of this entry »]
You might be forgiven for thinking that the Blues have enough attacking options, especially when Didier Drogba recovers from injury. Along with Anelka, Shevchenko and Kalou, Chelsea have a formidable set of forwards, while the likes of Deco, Lampard, Ballack and Cole all ‘know where the goal is’. However, the club seem determined to land the player who they’ve been kiss chasing all summer, word is out that Peter Kenyon is about to plant a big smacker on his lips! It’s highly doubtful that, upon becoming manager of the Blues, Avram Grant was told he had a job for as long as he wanted. Whatever the reasons were behind Jose Mourinho’s departure, it was an abrupt exit which left Chelsea needing a quick fix before the summer of 2008. So they turned to the Israeli, who has just agreed a very handsome compensation deal with his former employees, yet still has a terribly big chip on one of those broad shoulders. Just when you thought that Peter Kenyon couldn’t get any more unpopular, here is something which will surely do anything but endear him to the vast majority of football supporters. As we all know, Chelsea’s recent successes have been due in no small part to the club being bankrolled by a rich Russian oligarch, who has essentially changed the face of the Premier League as a result. However, this doesn’t stop the Blues chief executive protesting too much when someone claims that the division is now uncompetitive. [Read the rest of this entry »]
**Completely imaginary phone conversation…**
“I love you”
“I love you more Frank”
“Look, I’ve got to go now, we’ve got a training session. Tootles darlin”
“Ok, you hang up”
“No, you hang up”
“No youuu!….”
And so on and so on. It’s pretty blazingly obvious that the Special One has a special place in his special heart for Frank Lampard. [Read the rest of this entry »]
