What happens when you’re drawing or losing a football match in the English second flight? Do you a) panic and tell the team to play it long, b) send your central defender into attack or c) bring on Kevin Phillips to save the day? [Read the rest of this entry »]
It’s all very well claiming a goal if it gets deflected into the net by a defender, but Pompey’s Hermann Hreidarsson is taking things too far by claiming his team’s winner against Preston. The official Portsmouth site reports that the Icelander thinks he should be awarded for the goal, despite appearing to handle the ball and then seeing Preston’s Darren Carter lash the ball into his own net.
“I’m claiming that goal.
“Their player tried to clear it and kicked the ball into the roof of the net, but it was already going in. It’s definitely mine.
“The ball came into the area and hit my thigh and arm. But it was ball to arm, not arm to ball. There was no intent.”
Hermann might want to consider that while the ball was heading towards goal, there was a Preston man on the line ready to clear until Carter intervened with his howler under pressure. Indeed, it would have been no great surprise to see the referee blow for a PNE free-kick due to Hreidarsson’s alleged handball. COS thinks this isn’t even one for the dubious goals panel!

Pompey aim to reach the quarter finals of the FA Cup by beating Preston on Sunday afternoon. Ahead of the match, Sky Sports reports that Harry Redknapp has become the latest manager to criticise the Premier League’s proposals to play a 39th match overseas. You may remember that the Portsmouth manager already ‘saw it coming’ when the announcements were made a fortnight ago although it’s clear where he stands on the matter.
“They (the Premier League) may try to stage a game on the moon. That way it would be outside Fifa’s jurisdiction,” Redknapp told the Sunday Mirror.
“I think the Premier League had a responsibility to consult the people who really matter, like the supporters and the coaches.
“I’m wholly opposed to the idea – like a lot of managers are. I think people were guilty of going public with the hare-brained scheme and not giving it enough consideration.
“The supporters are no mugs. It’s understandable that they are dead set against it. They know one game will become five and five will become 10.”
Sir Alex Ferguson has also been critical of people shooting off their mouths far too early over the proposals. It appears that the 39th match is well on its way to becoming a dead duck, long before the project is even past the embryonic stage.
Pompey travel to Preston on Sunday with a very strong chance of making it to the quarter finals of the FA Cup. The Guardian report that Harry Redknapp might feel even more confident after discovering that recent signing Lassana Diarra has never been on the losing side in a cup competition since joining Chelsea from Le Havre in 2005.
Redknapp said: “I couldn’t believe it when someone told me. As soon as I did hear I knew there was no chance of dropping him. If he is that sort of lucky charm you have got to play him.
“I am not surprised, because Diarra is as good as any player I have ever worked with. He is as good as Frank Lampard, Joe Cole and Rio Ferdinand and has the potential to go on and achieve what they have.”
High praise indeed from the Portsmouth manager. The Frenchman has played in 23 Champions League, FA Cup and Carling Cup matches since arriving in England, winning 19 and drawing 4. Will he make it 24 tomorrow? The smart money says yes.
And why not after the Premier League away-day specialists were drawn away to Preston in the 5th round. While there’s sure to be a cracking atmosphere for the game at Deepdale, the BBC report that Harry Redknapp is confident of landing an FA Cup quarter final spot and taking a step nearer to Wembley.
“It could have been a good deal worse,” said Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp, whose side are one of six Premier League teams left in the competition.
“It’s a decent draw against a club with great history and I’m looking forward to going up there maybe meeting people like Tom Finney.
“Everyone wants a home tie at this stage but we are quite happy about this.
“We’ve got a chance because we have our African Nations Cup players back and when we’re at our strongest I think we can give anybody a game.”
Although PNE are 22nd in the Championship, Portsmouth will have to make a half-decent effort to be in the hat. Which is more than can be said for Liverpool and Chelsea, who have home ties against Barnsley and Huddersfield respectively. The FA have brought the final forward this year, it takes place at Old Trafford between Manchester United and Arsenal.
