by Dexter on October 23rd, 2008 no comments

The Daily Mail reports that Wayne Rooney, the man whose career started with his wonder goal against Arsenal at Goodison Park, is set to return to his old club with Manchester United. What’s more, he is pretty eager to notch up his 100th goal against them. [Read the rest of this entry »]

Man United set to snatch striker from Spurs?

by stresster on June 8th, 2008 54 comments

Just when it appeared that Tottenham had seen off the many potential suitors of Dimitar Berbatov, along come Manchester United, rearing their undeniably ugly head. Whether or not the potential loss of Cristiano Ronaldo has jolted the English champions into action is hard to tell, although The Times reports that the Bulgarian has already been left in tears when the initial chance to join the Red Devils was rebuffed by his club.

LAST SUMMER, when Dimitar Berbatov learnt that Tottenham were to rebuff attempts by Manchester United to sign him, he was tearful. Spurs were on tour in sunny South Africa but clouds settled over their striker. Should Berbatov be back in South Africa six weeks from now the skies will be brighter. United play exhibition games there between July 19 and 26 and Sir Alex Ferguson is considering trying to get Berbatov in a red shirt by then.

Ferguson offered £25m for the Bulgarian a year ago and a similar sum may be sufficient now to prise him from White Hart Lane. Daniel Levy, Tottenham’s chairman, would strike a hard bargain, but Berbatov has just two years remaining on his contract and has indicated he will reject an extension, worth £70,000 a week, mooted by his employers. AC Milan are interested and Berbatov likes the idea of playing in Spain, but United are a long-held dream. Ferguson, having done background checks, is not put off by doubts about his temperament.

Indeed, when you have managed the likes of Wayne Rooney and Eric Cantona, the Bulgarian striker’s sullen demeanour would be taken with a pinch of salt by the Scot. The acquisition of Berba would go a long way to compensating for the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo, if indeed the Portuguese forward leaves for Madrid. Can Spurs cling on to their jewel in the crown any longer?

Everton manager wins court case against Man United striker book

by stresster on June 4th, 2008 2 comments

Good to see that justice was done at the High Court yesterday, after news emerged that David Moyes won a cool £500,000 over allegations made by Wayne Rooney in his autobiography. The Manchester United striker played under the Scot at Everton and alleged that his manager had leaked details of a private conversation between the pair to a newspaper, something that Moyes categorically denied from day one. The Daily Record report:

Moyes’s solicitor Edwar Parladorio said: “Mr Moyes was not the source, direct or indirect, of anything in the article. There was no breach of confidence or betrayal of trust by MrMoyes.

“Happily, Mr Rooney, Mr Davies and HarperCollins Publishing appear here today, by their solicitor, to acknowledge they were mistaken, publicly withdraw the allegation and apologise.

“The defendants have also agreed to pay Mr Moyes a substantial sum in damages and his legal costs.”

Sarah Toolan, for the defendants, said they accepted the allegation “was untrue and sincerely apologise” for the “distress and embarrassment”.

Like Aston Villa, the Everton boss has proved himself as one of football’s nice guys by awarding the money to charity. Clearing his name was clearly the objective here and it’s a shame that the chavvy oik that goes by the name of Wayne Rooney gave his consent to lies being published. It’s also laughable that a player so young published an autobiography in the first place.

Manchester United eye £15m strike partner for Rooney and Tevez: Could this really happen?

by offsidetrap on June 3rd, 2008 11 comments

After finishing off the 2008 campaign with the Premiership and UEFA Champions League titles, one would wonder how Manchester United could improve on a squad that is considered by many to be the best in the world.

Well If United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has his way, he may yet add another piece to the puzzle that would surely make every team in the Premiership quake in their boots.

The be-all end-all paper that is The Sun is reporting that United are prepared to use the chaos going over at Blackburn to their advantage. The club is planning a massive bid to take Paraguayan ace, Roque Santa Cruz, out of the turmoil and into the loving arms of SAF.

Manchester United are planning to bid £15 million to lure Santa Cruz to Old Trafford, after Sir Alex Ferguson was persuaded to give up on a bid to sign Thierry Henry. (The Sun)

Surely this is just paper talk, but if this deal were true, could you imagine how scary it would be to go up against a strike group that included Tevez, Rooney and Santa Cruz? I think I see four or five Premiership teams wetting themselves as we speak.

So what’s your take United supporters? Is Santa Cruz the man to push United even further ahead of the pack? Or would you rather see SAF spend the £15m elsewhere?

Manchester United and Chelsea in race to sign Real Madrid forward

by stresster on June 2nd, 2008 8 comments

Goodness me, this would be a coup for one of the biggest clubs in the Premier League. United and Chelsea have been involved in a recent title race, as well as going toe-to-toe in an attempt to win the Champions League. According to Setanta, they could well be clashing horns by having a bidding war to try and land the signature of Robinho.

The Real Madrid forward has hinted that he may leave the Bernabeu in the summer and has revealed interest from the best two teams in England. Perhaps he can act as a makeweight when Cristiano Ronaldo finally decides to leave Manchester for Spain in the next few days.

Real Madrid star Robinho has revealed that he has been offered the chance to join both Chelsea and Manchester United.

The striker has told Brazilian reporters that he will leave El Santiago Bernabeu subject to a suitable offer being made by one of the Premier League giants.

There’s no doubt that the Blues need would be more pressing, especially if Deputy Drog is to leave as expected. While United have Rooney, Tevez and (if he stays) Ronaldo in their artillery, Chelsea will look desperately short, even if Anelka finds the form which has previously made him one of Europe’s most lethal marksmen.

Tevez to stick around at Manchester United?

by stresster on May 30th, 2008 6 comments

What an impact the little Argentine has made in the Premier League since signing for West Ham. It’s strange to think that the Hammers struggled so much with him and Javier Mascherano in the squad, although it took both a while to settle in England and the latter didn’t play that much for his first English club.

Carlos Tevez has been tearing it up for Manchester United this season, scoring nineteen goals, although his Old Trafford future appears far from certain according to the Manchester Evening News. They report that fellow striker Wayne Rooney is desperate for the Red Devils to sign a permanent deal with his partner in crime, rather than continue to farm him out on loan.

“It is crucial to get him signed and I am sure that will happen,” he said.

“Carlos loves playing football here, he’s enjoying it so I don’t see why it will be a problem.

“We saw him at West Ham what a great player he was and how hard he works for the team,” said the England international.

“I had no doubts that we could play together and from training with him when he first came you could immediately see the qualities he had. I couldn’t wait to play with him.

“Towards the end of the season we didn’t play together a lot, but when we did, we did really well.”

Tevez scored a number of crucial goals for Man United last season, in particular the equalisers in the lleague at Ewood Park and White Hart Lane. Surely it’s a long shot that he’s going anywhere else in the summer?

Manchester United striker receives England warning

by stresster on May 30th, 2008 3 comments

Let’s face it, a leopard can’t change its spots. There seems little point trying to remove the aggression from Wayne Rooney’s game for fear of making him half the player he is. Nevertheless, it’s clear that whenever he’s pulled on an England shirt recently, the boy has become nothing short of a liability for his country. ‘Wazza’ wasn’t far away from a red card on a Wednesday night, despite the match only being a friendly against the US. The BBC report that Fabio Capello will be having a quiet word in the striker’s ear about throwing his weight around.

“I have to speak to Rooney and explain not to do these tackles the next time I’m with the team,” Capello said.

“I like players who have quality but also who do not fear to tackle.

“He is young, he is a good player and I think the future will be better. For this reason I think I have to speak with him.

“When you play you need to tackle very hard. He did two very, very hard tackles, possibly yellow cards but not red cards.”

It’s been a frustrating few months for Wayne Rooney, who has not scored nearly as many goals as he would have liked this season. While injury prevented him from playing an entire season, dare we say that he was Manchester United’s worst performer in the Champions League final and that the pressure heaped on his shoulders has gotten a little too much for the former boy wonder?

Fabio Capello using Manchester United man as ‘second striker’ and giving Chelsea losers chance to forget defeat

by stresster on May 27th, 2008 8 comments

Fabio Capello has adopted the role of generous grandfather ahead of England’s crucial and desperately important friendly against the footballing superpower that are the United States of America. The BBC report that the Italian is going to allow the likes of Frank Lampard and John Terry the opportunity to open a whole can of ‘whup-ass’ on their opponents in a bid to help them forget their woes at missing out on the Carling Cup, Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League this season. What a kind-hearted old codger he is!

“I’m very happy to see Lampard in the midfield because I think he’s a very important player for us.

“For Chelsea players it is very important to play and forget the last game in Moscow.”

Meanwhile, he’s also revealed that Wayne Rooney will be getting a partner in crime up front against the States, rather than playing the Manchester United striker in a lone role. Who will be the lucky one out of Peter Crouch, Dean Ashton, Jermain Defoe or Gabriel Agbonlahor that is going to terrorise the most powerful nation in the world?

“It is very important for me to see Rooney not as the first but the second striker,” Capello told BBC Five Live.

It will be just typical of an England team that hasn’t qualified for Euro 2008 to go out all guns blazing on Wednesday night and beat USA 5-0 or something. Or will it just be the customary struggle to a 2-1 victory?

Hull confident of signing Manchester United striker

by stresster on May 26th, 2008 3 comments

Yes, that’s right, Wayne Rooney likes the idea of moving from rainy Manchester to Humberside in the summer and joining the Premier League new boys. Hang on, that’s not right, it’s actually Fraizer Campbell who could be making the permanent switch after helping the Tigers to achieve promotion in Saturday’s play-off final. The striker set up Dean Windass for the only goal of the game and Sky Sports reports that the City chairman wants to have the youngster for keeps after some impressive displays this season.

“The position with Fraizer is that he now goes back to Manchester United and Sir Alex has a decision to make,” Duffen told the Yorkshire Post.

“I am sure he will know whether Fraizer is ready to go into the first-team squad at United or not. If it is the latter, then there will be two options – one to loan Fraizer out for another year’s experience or, instead, to sell him.

“Obviously, if he chooses one of these two options then we would be interested and would then have a conversation with United. And I believe we would then have a very good chance of getting Fraizer.”

It’s clear that Hull are going to have to spend big in the summer if they are to stay in the Premier League by the end of next season. It’s hard to see Campbell getting much in the way of first-team football when you consider Rooney, Ronaldo, Tevez and Saha are his current competition, and Sir Alex Ferguson is always keen on making sure his starlets get plenty of match experience in the meantime.

Wigan ready to piss on Manchester United bonfire

by stresster on May 9th, 2008 18 comments

Thirteen years ago, Blackburn Rovers won the Premier League title, despite losing 2-1 to Liverpool on the last day of the season. This was because rivals Manchester United just simply couldn’t get over the finishing line at West Ham, drawing 1-1 and spurning several chances to land the spoils. Could history be about to repeat itself at the JJB Stadium?

Despite a question mark over Steve Bruce’s allegiances to the Red Devils, his players are talking up their chances of ruining United’s big day in a big way. Emmerson Boyce has told the Daily Mail that the bobbly pitch, the way that the Latics will be organised and a burning desire to make their own headlines could stop Sir Alex Ferguson’s men in their tracks.

He said: “People don’t like coming to our ground and playing against us.

“It will help against Manchester United. On a perfect pitch all their top players will have a field day, but they will have difficulty passing and running with the ball on ours, even though they are top-class players. They won’t be able to play the game they’re used to, it’s nowhere near the standard of Old Trafford.

“We can get in their faces, test their touches and it will help us. A lot of people have moaned about it this season, but that’s usually because we have either got a good result or given them a tough game. We have got good results against the big teams because we love being the underdogs and there will be no pressure on us on Sunday, it’s all on them.”

He added: “We would like to emulate West Ham. People still talk about that team that cost Manchester United the title 13 years ago and I’d love people to remember us in 13 years’ time. We are loving the publicity. Everyone will be watching us across the world and it shows how far we’ve come as a club. We are going to enjoy being in the limelight.

“People are talking about Wigan right now and that’s a good thing. The fact we can have a say in the title race has given us extra motivation. I and the rest of the players want to show people what we can do against Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez and if we cost them the title everyone will talk about us. We are safe in the table. They are the ones with everything to lose.”

This will be music to the ears of Avram Grant and his Chelsea mob as they set about destructing Bolton on Sunday while holding a transistor radio to their left ear. That’s apart from Didier Drogba who will be moodily sitting on the subs bench, listening to his ipod as usual. Wigan managed to hold Arsenal to a goalless draw recently, thus helping to end the Gunners’ title challenge. Emile Heskey then scored in the dying embers of the match at Stamford Bridge to make it ‘advantage United’ in the title race. Will the Latics’ final act be to deprive the champions a second successive league title?

Manchester United alert! Chelsea keeper’s gotta brand new shirt

by stresster on May 8th, 2008 8 comments

What a contest the Champions League final promises to be. The bookmakers can’t split Manchester United and Chelsea in the betting, with both teams packed to the brim with talent. Just one moment of brilliance or madness could make all the difference in Moscow. Or maybe just the colour of a goalkeeping jersey…

The Daily Mail have revealed that Petr Cech is almost certain to wear a bright orange goalkeeping top for the contest against the Red Devils. He’s claiming it’s more likely to distract the likes of Ronaldo, Rooney and Tevez when they’re bearing down on goal with the ball at their feet. Could there be anything in this?

“Studies say the orange colour spreads the most when the striker attacks, in the split of a second as he focuses,” said Cech, whose side need to get a better result at Stamford Bridge than United achieve at Wigan to win their third title in four seasons.

“This colour is like a sort of alarm or alert which really spreads and is very difficult to avoid, so this should be good for me.”

Petr, as a goalkeeper, your hands and arms should be very good for you, not the colour of your goalkeeping shirt. Apparently there’s no truth in the rumour that Edwin Van Der Sar is going to dress up as a clown for the final, squirting water out of a flower and into the eyes of Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka. Which is a shame as we all would have liked to have seen that!

Will revenge be sweet for Manchester United striker at Chelsea?

by stresster on April 19th, 2008 4 comments

Arsenal fans sang ‘We won the league in Manchester’ and then ‘We won the league at White Hart Lane’ when they landed league titles at Old Trafford and Tottenham a few seasons ago. Will it now be the turn of Manchester United fans to sing ‘We won the league at Stamford Bridge’? Wayne Rooney certainly hopes that this will be the case, with Sky Sports reporting that the striker would love to secure the title in the backyard of their title rivals.

“If it was possible to win it at Blackburn, we’d take that,” Rooney said. “But if we can win at Chelsea it would be great for everyone at the club, especially the fans.

“We know that if we win our next two games then we are champions and it’s something that all the players are ready for.

“It’s always nice to win against one of your closest rivals, and to win at Stamford Bridge would be brilliant.”

It would also serve as some kind of revenge for Rooney and his United chums after they were beaten 3-0 at the Bridge in 2006, which effectively led to Chelsea winning the league. It was also the game where the United striker broke his metatarsal, something which deprived him of full fitness for the 2006 World Cup.
