Shola Ameobi scored the game’s only goal meaning the Newcastle United striker has now scored as many goals in the last week than he managed in the whole of last season.

The powers-that-be at St James’ Park are probably grateful that Tottenham’s current ‘crisis’ has meant that it’s the White Hart Lane club who are dominating the sports pages at the moment, rather than Newcastle’s current plight. Against Manchester City on Monday night, they have an opportunity to clamber out of the bottom three, with a certain Magpies front man keen to be the main man for the team. Many COS readers will remember John Fashanu more for his bright waistcoats and for him shouting ‘Awooga’ on Gladiators rather than what he did as a professional footballer. Others will not-so-fondly remember the striker putting himself about for Wimbledon, scoring plenty of goals and roughing up defenders in the process. It appears as though Newcastle have a player with the potential to do the same. [Read the rest of this entry »]
With Michael Owen, Mark Viduka and Obafemi Martins at the club, Newcastle are seemingly blessed with attacking quality, although injury seems to be persistent for the former two players. Therefore, perhaps it’s a blessing in disguise that they have kept hold of this striker, who was a hair’s breadth away from signing for Ipswich Town last week. Kevin Keegan is certainly pleased to have him back at the club! [Read the rest of this entry »]
It appeared that Shola Ameobi was about to end his eight-year association with Newcastle United, something that appeared to be delighting many Magpies fans. Despite making nearly 100 league starts in a black and white shirt, it’s fair to say that it’s been a stop-start career for the former England Under-21 international up to now, and that a fresh start is just what he needed. After an outstanding 3-0 win at Barnsley, some might question whether Ipswich Town need any additional firepower in their ranks. However, Jim Magilton is clearly keen to bring in another striker, who could form a prolific partnership with Kevin Lisbie. [Read the rest of this entry »]
It’s fair to say that Shola Ameobi’s footballing career has never really got going. The gangly striker has made just 95 starting appearances for Newcastle United in the past eight seasons and it’s therefore a surprise that he’s only decided to go out on loan at this stage of his career. Sky Sports report that Championship table toppers Stoke City have taken the player on loan until the end of the season as they make a final push for the promised land of the Premier League.
Can the England Under-21 international be the final piece in the jigsaw as far as the Potters’ promotion quest is concerned, or will he flatter to deceive, much as he’s done throughout his time at St James’ Park? It’s certainly a risky move when you consider Ameobi has featured for the Magpies on only eight occasions this season, many of them as a substitute.
Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi has featured in just 8 matches for the Geordies so far this season and has failed to find the back of the opposition net in those matches. He was left out in the cold by the then Geordie manager Sam Allardyce in the first half of the season and although Kevin Keegan is ready to embrace the player and give him another try, the Newcastle gaffer warns that Ameobi has to perform now.
KK says:
Our challenge, mine in particular, is to look at the club and assess players. I’ve told him (Ameobi) what I think. He is 26 now and he has to make the breakthrough quickly or maybe there is somewhere else he can do it. There is a better player in Shola, but the test will be when he gets his chance – and he will.
It’s now-or-never for Shola Ameobi but he has at least one more chance to resurrect himself. Will he be able to do so?
Some vital match practice at last for out-of-favour Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi. Ameobi has been left out in the cold for much of the season but new Toon boss Kevin Keegan wants him to resume his usual activities and pull himself together. Ameobi will play for United’s reserves team against Manchester City’s reserves on Monday night at St. James’ Park.
Joining Ameobi will be Emre and reserve team boss Adam Sadler says:
Both Shola and Emre will be involved. It’s fantastic that we are playing at St James’s and everybody is looking forward to it.The last couple of games have been impressive and our youngsters such as Kazenga LuaLua, Tamas Kadar, Ben Tozer and Wesley Ngo Baheng have done very well.
