Sir Bobby Robson: Legend, Inspiration and a True Gentleman

Some words are used far too often and their power blunted by overuse but there are few people more deserving of the term Legend. Rest In Peace Bobby.

Sir Bobby Robson Dies Peacefully this Morning Aged 76

by Christian Bailey on July 31st, 2009 9 comments

A Legend of the game passes away.

Sports - February 23, 2008

Former England manager Sir Bobby Robson has died at the age of 76, following a long battle with cancer.
Robson will be best remembered on the international stage for leading England to the 1990 World Cup semi-final.
At club level, he cut his managerial teeth at Fulham before establishing his credentials at Ipswich where he won the FA Cup and Uefa Cup in a 13-year stay.
Spells at PSV Eindhoven, Sporting Lisbon, Porto and Barcelona followed before managing at Newcastle.
Robson was at St James’ Park for a charity match earlier this week.
An England side, featuring Alan Shearer and several members of the 1990 World Cup squad including Paul Gascoigne and Peter Shilton, beat a Germany team 3-2.
The game was a repeat of the 1990 World Cup semi-final when England, managed by Sir Bobby, lost on penalties.

A statement issued on behalf of his family said: “It is with great sadness that it has been announced today that Sir Bobby Robson has lost his long and courageous battle with cancer.
“He died very peacefully this morning (Friday) at his home in County Durham with his wife and family beside him.
“Sir Bobby’s funeral will be private and for family members only.
“A thanksgiving service in celebration of Sir Bobby’s life will be held at a later date for his many friends and colleagues.
“Lady Robson and the family would very much appreciate it if their privacy could be respected at this difficult time.” (BBC Sport)

I think everyone had a soft spot for Bobby, regardless of their footballing allegiance and I think the main reason he garnered such universal appreciation and admiration was that he really loved the game and you could see it every day of his tenure as either player or manager.

He seemed to me to be a true gentleman who seemed to have an aura of awareness that he had been blessed to make a living out of the game he loved and never came across as someone who took it for granted.

There are very few people in the game past or present who can truly claim to be admired and adored right across the football spectrum, Sir Bobby was just one such man.

Always with a smile on his face throughout his incredible footballing journey and even during his long running battle with Cancer and It was a sign of his standing in the game that so many stars took part in the recent charity match at St James’ Park and that such a large crowd turned up to show their support for the man and his cause.

His importance in the game and the achievements at managerial and playing level should not be forgotten. Here was a man who experienced success right across Europe and as England national boss provided us with a truly seminal moment in footballing history as he guided Gazza, Lineker and Co. to the 1990 World Cup Semi-Finals.

The game is greatly lessened by his loss and his humanity. Gone but never forgotten. Rest In Peace.

Sir Alex: I did consider going abroad

by sub on February 28th, 2008 1 comment

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted that he did vaguely considering working outside the English Premier League earlier in his Manchester United managerial career but also says that he never quite felt the desire to leave Old Trafford for foreign pastures.

Sir Alex says:

Roy Hodgson has done what a lot of us would love to have done and work abroad.

I always remember Bobby Robson saying that the best thing he ever did was go to PSV, Sporting Lisbon, Porto and Barcelona.

He was out of the country for maybe 10 or 12 years. Working in different climates with different cultures definitely broadens your education.

I remember meeting Roy Hodgson in Malmo in 1987 when I had just joined Manchester United. Malmo were playing Ajax in the European Cup.

Over the years he has gone to Inter Milan, Switzerland, Finland, Udinese, Blackburn etc… it’s incredible all the teams that he has managed.

You can see when he’s interviewed he knows what he is talking about.

Sometimes I used to say to myself ‘I’d love to have tried managing abroad sometime’ but then it was difficult for me.

My choices were cut off simply because I was the manager of Manchester United which is amazing and you don’t leave Manchester United.

Good for Man United fans that he didn’t leave. Otherwise history, both for the Reds Devils and the Premiership, would have been so different!

Sir Bobby: Keegan has a ‘mammoth job’ at Newcastle

by sub on February 16th, 2008 no comments

Former Newcastle United manager Sir Bobby Robson has thrown a word of caution to the current Geordie boss Kevin Keegan by saying that the squad needs a massive facelift to compete for top honours. He says:

Kevin has a mammoth job all right, a really difficult job because his squad is not good enough.

That is the harsh fact of the matter. He has to make do and mend until the summer, when he can put together his own team.

That will mean retaining some, but definitely getting rid of others.

They will not win anything this season, but equally, won’t go down. I am convinced of that because of the points they have in hand over the bottom clubs.

However, it is not going to be pretty. It is going to be a tough slog.

On Friday, Sir Bobby was quoted as saying that he believes that Newcastle are the best bet to break into the top four although he did admit that that would take some time. Keegan indeed has the potential and the club has the money and what the Toon army should understand is that KK has to be given some time.

Sir Bobby tips Newcastle for a top four finish

by sub on February 15th, 2008 11 comments

Newcastle United for the top four in the English Premier League sometime soon? Seems ludicrious, doesn’t it? But if you are Sir Bobby Robson, then you certainly do not think so.

The former Toon manager and the last man to lead the Magpies to a UEFA Champions League spot says that if there is any club in the Premiership who can break into the top four, then it is Newcastle. Sir Bobby says:

There are clubs in the Premier League who could do it. There are clubs who could break the monopoly, but Newcastle are the ones who have the best chance of breaking into it and staying there because of the fanbase, the financial backing and the fact it’s a one-club city which eats, drinks and breathes football.

Well, Sir Bobby is not entirely wrong but at the moment, but it is tough to see how the Geordies can finish in the top four. Liverpool would still be strong even with the mess that they are in, and Arsenal and Manchester United are simply not catchable. Chelsea maybe. But Roman Abramovich has given no indication that he has fallen out of love with the London Blues and so Newcastle’s lofty ambitions can stay just the way they are – as dreams.

Sir Bobby stunned after Newcastle axe Allardyce

by stresster on January 10th, 2008 no comments

So it appears that Sam Allardyce’s departure from Bolton to Newcastle in the summer was no good to anyone. The Trotters have been struggling against the threat of relegation all season, getting shot of ‘Little Sam’ after a handful of matches and installing Gary Megson as new manager. Meanwhile, it’s been an unhappy time for ‘Big Sam’ at St James’ Park, where he’s been under constant pressure since some miserable performances in November.

The Guardian report that former Magpies boss Sir Bobby Robson was shocked to hear the news, despite the speculation over Allardyce’s future at the club. He might be forgiven, seeing as the pair were chatting at a Newcastle reserve match on Tuesday night!

“Like most people I was very surprised and stunned by the news,” he said. “I was in his company on Tuesday night. I went to see Newcastle reserves play Sunderland reserves and Sam was there.

“So hearing the news was without doubt a surprise, and I am stunned. That’s the eighth Premiership manager we’ve lost this season already. The pressure is too much now in the Premiership. The dismissals of managers are coming fast and frequent, and it’s rather sad for the game in many respects.”

Was everyone else as surprised as Sir Bobby or had the writing been on the wall for some time? It appears that a bunch of poor results was just half the problem, with the fans unhappy at the style of play their team were adopting.
