Stoke City chairman Peter Coates has backed the comments of Tony Pulis which have landed the Potters manager in trouble with the Football Association.

Pulis has been charged with improper conduct by the FA following his criticism of referee Lee Probert after last month’s 2-1 Carling Cup defeat to Liverpool at the Britannia Stadium.

The Welshman questioned Probert’s decision to disallow a Jon Walters effort in the first half of the game and felt there had been a foul on Peter Crouch which should have seen Stoke awarded a penalty.

He was also unhappy that a Jamie Carragher tackle on Matthew Etherington did not result in a red card, and told the BBC: “You have to have a level playing field – you can’t have it both ways, and he (Probert) has done that in my opinion.

“He has not made the correct decisions.”

Pulis went on to refer to past Potters matches where he thought Probert had made poor decisions.

He has denied the FA charge, requesting a personal hearing, and the 56-year-old has the full support of Coates, who feels Pulis’ words were justified.

“I am surprised and disappointed because Tony made legitimate points about poor decisions,” said Coates, quoted in The Sentinel.

“I think managers are entitled to question poor decisions. I’m not saying referees can’t make mistakes – we all do.

“But why shouldn’t referees be criticised? Why should they be wrapped in cotton wool?”

Tottenham Hotspur can only sign Real Madrid midfielder Lassana Diarra if Stoke City buy Wilson Palacios.

Spurs have held talks with Diarra, 26, but his wage demands appear likely to scupper any deal.

Manager Harry Redknapp signed the France international for Portsmouth in January 2008 and has made previous efforts to bring him to White Hart Lane.

Tottenham have agreed a £12million fee with the La Liga giants, who are keen to generate the funds to launch their own transfer spending.

But Spurs’ rigid wage structure means they cannot afford to pay Diarra’s high wages until they offload their fringe players.

The north Londoners will listen to offers for Jermaine Jenas, but the deal closest to completion is Stoke’s £10million bid for Wilson Palacios.

But the Honduras international’s high wages are also putting pay to any move leaving all three clubs in limbo.

Redknapp has also been pursuing West Ham’s Scott Parker, but wages could also prove a problem in the case of the Football Writer’s Player of the Year.

Stoke City are planning and £8million bid to sign Juventus midfielder Mohamed Sissoko and bring him back to the Premier League.

The 26-year-old spent three years at Liverpool and scored one goal in 85 games and helped the club win the FA Cup in 2006.

The Mali international is wanted by Trotters boss Tony Pulis as his star summer signing, but faces competition from PSG and Marseille, according to the Sun.

“It’s no secret we need to bring players in to boost the squad,” Pulis said. ”We’re hoping to do some deals over the next few weeks.”

Meanwhile, Stoke keeper Thomas Sorensen has raised fresh doubts over his future at the Britannia Stadium.

The Denmark international threatened to quit the club after losing his starting place to Asmir Begovic before vowing to fight to regain the No 1 jersey.

Sorensen, who is wanted by West Brom, says his future is not decided but he is desperate to play first-team football.

“I really appreciate all the support from you Stoke fans,” wrote on Twitter. “Nothing has been decided about my future yet.

“It is frustrating when u just wanna play football but the situation makes it a bit complicated.”

Manchester City captain Carlos Tevez admits Sunday’s game against Bolton wanderers could be his last for the club.

The 27-year-old has been linked with moves to Inter Milan and Real Madrid this summer.

“I don’t have problems with the club, things are fine with the manager and everyone, but it is a decision I need to discuss with my family.

“There are no problems here. The only thing is my family, my kids are a long distance from Manchester and if there is an option to go then it will be something to do with my family.

“I will think hard about what is best for me, first I want to clear my head. It would be personal rather than professional.

“It’s a family matter. It’s not for the club to do anything about.”
